SimCity™ 2000 Special Edition

So far, I have not experienced a disappointment when revisiting an old game from the past. Unfortunately, coming back to SimCity 2000 after almost 20 years was my first such experience. I remember it being a very good game, not excellent, but I have enjoyed building, destroying and managing cities in this game. Playing it now was really painful for me, because I was quite excited to play it once more after all these years. The interface is very clunky, I have miss-clicked and destroyed power plants, the colours went full rainbow after alt-tabbing and the game itself got quite unpleasanat overall. It makes me sad that I have good memories of playing it and I could not enjoy it as much as I would like to.

Sim City is one of those games that seems simplistic and uninteresting on its surface, but has a way of drawing you in, making the hours slip by as you build up your metropolis. Starting from a small village you can build into a gigantic city scape, complete with trains, colleges, ballparks, and, as time passes massive arcopoli to save your futuristic population. Your problems can range anywhere from traffic congestion to monster from outer space attack, and you must combine able planning with budget sense to keep from going bankrupt. It's a deep, complicated and hugely fun game.

My first real PC game when I first bought a PC and what an excellent choice it was! This was one of the best Maxis games that's been released with a great mix of realism, simulation and the usual dose of wacky Maxis humor. I lost countless hours trying to build up a huge, bustling metropolis. I even went so far as to buy the Official Handbook which only served to awaken an interest in actual city planning that led me to discover more about the design of some of the great cities of our time. A great game and a hallmark title from Will Wright and Maxis. You won't be disappointed.

I downloaded the "Mac version" of this game thinking it would give me the version that would run on my old 68K Macintosh Quadra. Unfortunately, the "Mac version" that GOG.com is providing here is actually the DOS version of SimCity 2000 wrapped up in a DOSBox emulator. To be clear, THE GAME RUNS WELL, NO PROBLEMS, so those of you just wanting to play the PC version SimCity 2000 on your modern Mac computer, this is the right product for you to buy. But if you are trying to get the authentic 68K Mac version of SimCity 2000 that you had when you were a kid so you can run it on your favorite Mac OS emulator, this is NOT the right product for you to buy. I rate this product 3 stars because you do get a no-hassle, properly working version of the game for your Mac OS X computer, but I do not rate it higher because this is not what I wanted. My fault perhaps, but I am still disappointed.

NOT SPECIAL EDITION! Simcity2000 is great, this dosbox version works. But this is not the Win95 Special Edition. Period.
