One of the most acclaimed adventure games of all time is now back, better than ever. Grim Fandango's epic story of four years in the life (or death) of Manny Calavera, travel agent to the dead, has been remastered to look, sound, and control even better than when it won GameSpot's Game of the Year award upon its original launch. Grim Fandango still stands as a classic of the genre, with unforgettable characters and unique combination of film noir and Mexican folklore.
Grim Fandango Remastered includes:
Repainted, hi-res character textures
New, dynamic lighting
Classic score re-recorded with a full live orchestra
I'm not super fond of this remaster, but it's great to be so easily able to play Grim Fandango. This type of games is maybe out of fashion, but its pristine artistic value will never expire.
I played the game just last year, in the October auf 2022, and it was a fantastic point & click experience! The comedic writing was just really good and even the moon-logic puzzles felt fitting due to that. I also really liked the overall atmosphere, the characters grew to my heart and I was a bit sad, but also happy when the journey was over. Just how a good point & click story should go.
So, if you like the genre, you should definitely check this out, it's reputation is a classic is well deserved.
I tried to like this game. On numerous occasions. However, after a game- (or better installation-)breaking bug, I give up after years of failed attempts.
Sometimes I tried and got stuck to give up, now with more time on my hands I tried again, advanced through the story, but now Manny is stuck in one place, the game loads directly to that place, I can't access the menu, he doesn't move and another installation also didn't help. I will not waste anymore time with this game.
Could someone please explain this game to me?
I've never played Grim Fandango and this is my first encounter with it. I've ditched almost immediately, though. The performance and the game itself are just ridiculously abysmal and besides some wacky jokes and purely nostalgia value I can't think of anything else that could justify the praise this game's got. The graphics are nice and they had to truly impress back in 1998, but that's it. The gameplay, though, is just appaling. The introductory sequence, where you're looking for the best client, is terrible and almost nothing that has to be done requires any kind of logical approach. I got to the casino part, hoping that I will endure and eventually find something of value in this game, but then the whole game went apeshit - my character's model simply got busted, circling around with broken animations and clipping through backgrounds. Turned out to be permanent - the save file itself was busted.
I'm not going to torture my eyes with the grotesque that started on my screen and I'm not going to replay the 1/3 of the game for the second time. Up to this point the game failed to impress me: both in the narrative and puzzle department. There were some wacky jokes here and there, the voice acting is ok, but what else? Personally, it only wasted my time. Completely different from what I expected.
Truth to be told, from my observations, nostalgia value is the only strong point people defending this game nowadays are able to bring up.
Maybe, one day I will finish it.
