Think of the Total War Series in a Fantasy setting, but with turn combat system instead of RTS elements. Than you get the picture. My all time most dearest game ever. Unfortunately the Amiga version (which had better sound effect, re-used fromt he Amiga Version of Pool of Radiance, had a slight and for all I know never fixed bug with the easten elves city. But that shouldn't bother anyone, as this is the very well working PC version of the game.
If you can live with the graphics and squares instead of hexes, than you get a game which is easy to play, with lots and lots of events etc. to discover, an AI which does a pretty, pretty good job, and many great campaigns an scenarios. I don't know how many hundred hours I've played against the AI, and I don't regret a single minute of them. All I know is that I will alway come back at least once a year to this game, at least as long as there is no new Strategic Command WW1 using the latest (and best) Strategic Command engine.
