Deus Ex™ GOTY Edition

A masterpiece in memory

Deus ex is a sci-fi cyberpunk shooter with roleplaying elements, which was miles ahead of it's time. The atmosphere of the world is amazing, like the synthie soundtrack. The first time you play Deus Ex is extraordinary. At least I tried the revision version. I chose difficulty easy to find out that it was hard especially in the beginning of the game without or few cybermodules installed. The new graphics are beautiful, but too me revision seems to be for veterans. In the maps Hong Kong, in the sewer of Paris and in the submarine base I got lost. I ran around for hours to find a temple, a special door and some bad to see switches. In the end I needed the help of youtube videos to get out of it. The game is very old school: there is no ingame map which shows the location only photographic maps. A feature no one will miss to nowadays standards. I think, there are better and more fun titles out now, which didn't stop the game flow. One time I needed a cheat to get through a special door, probably an error. Thanks god for implementing cheats. Don't get me wrong: deus ex is a must play, but I found it more and more tedious playing it again over the years.

STAR WARS™ - The Force Unleashed™ Ultimate Sith Edition

Short arcade game with big problems

At first I had to change the difficulty of the game to easy to be able to beat one of the nerving boss fights after endlessly trying it on normal difficulty level. After changing the difficulty level I found out that it wasn't my fault or missing gaming skills, because it was due to the bad controls. Later in the game I should defeat a star destroyer in the sky with my might powers. Yes, the game concept is really that stupid! It was impossible to me, therefore I load down a savegame to skip this awful passage. Late in the game I had a boss fight with an asthmatic person in a black cape and then I decided to kill this game from my hard drive. The view was confusing and the whole scene was unplayable to me. Do yourself a favor and spend your money and time and skip this horrible title even it is for free. I mean, an arcade action game with keyboard control and view problems!??? Most locations of the star wars universe were badly designed.

Mafia Classic

A movie world come true

The first time I played Mafia was on a win 98 system with a hard disk detection subroutine which caused endless stuttering like a dia show. This was my first round based driving simulation. Fortunately only sometimes. It tried to spoil my gaming pleasure, but after 4 evenings I reached the end titles. Thanks Microsoft for their nwo-software, part of old win 98. The first impression of the game was breathtaking. I was part of the game, I was far away in another era in the USA and couldn't stop playing. The graphics were state of the art and the music awesome, especially Django Reinhardt's gypsy jazz songs. The missions varied and the plot was like a thrilling mob life. Later the son of my brothers girl friend played this game and he couldn't believe that they had more beautiful car models just in the beginning of the automobile era. After playing this game the arrow buttons of my keyboard were twisted. In one mission you have to win a car race in a silver arrow car. I needed 2 hours to beat this level. One day I flew to Vienna with my parents and I visited the old art museum. I went through the entrance and made a spiritual experience. I skipped the window for the entrance fee and the guards and a group of visitors stared at me. My parents were speechless. The memory of this hall returned to my mind and I said: "Mafia". Everybody was laughing then. The programmers used this museum for the end level of the game. What can I say more? It's one of the best computer games ever created. It's an amazing third-person-shooter and cruising through the city is pure fun. I propose to try this title and the main part of Mafia II.

System Shock® 2 (1999)

No masterpiece

1999 didn't seem to be that good year for computer games. One year can be a long time for technical progress. In 2000 we had masterpieces like deus ex or no one lives forever, which were worlds ahead in having game fun in comparison to this title. To me system shock 2 is a very difficult game. I think, it belongs to this kind of ego games for people who want to tell proudly to everybody that they played it to the end titles. It's hard to get into it. The controls are clunky sometimes and therefore I had to die and reload often in fights, which was nerving, because the enemy was respawning after each corner out of nothing. It's hard to get the orientation and to find out what to do next, which is work not fun. A few time ago I played dead space which is comparable to this title and I didn't like, too. This part was enough, therefore I am lucky about saving my money for the remake of the first system shock.

Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package

Crazy and funny open city shooter

This is a really cool GTA parody with a nice comic style and good and fluent graphics. I found this game much better than the GTA titles I tested, because I always had technical problems with GTA titles and never couldn't play them to the end. Everything is included in this game: sex, drugs, rock n and roll, aliens, zombies and of course a princess to be rescued. The game is easy to play with mouse and keyboard. I also tried saints row 2, but stopped it soon due to bad button presetting. I think, saints row 2 is for gamepad artists. There is nice music in the game like broadcast station krhyme with good rap songs. Take a jet glider from your appartment on top of a scyscraper to your next mission. It's amazing. The difficulty of the missions is perfectly balanced and they varify in their arcade action. There is a wide range of weapons available. The funniest element in the game I found was a short old school dos text adventure in one of the mission about a unicorn. There is really a lot to be liked in this fun game.

Mafia II (Classic)

Very good game with bad dlcs

The first time I played Mafia II I was disappointed. It has always been a very good game but it wasn't a masterpiece like it's predecessor. Some time ago I played the below average successor Mafia III. In comparison to part three it is totally shining. I always prefered the time period with the vintage cars and don't need any GTA. It has good graphics, professional voice acting and a nice atmosphere. Especially in the beginning with the snow landscape. You cruise around in the town hearing Buddy Holly songs or Dean Martin. I love this kind of music. The story is like a mob movie with a critical statement. Technically the main story is easy to play with keyboad and mouse. Don't buy it for these dlcs. Due to the brainsick level of difficulty of these dlcs I had to start it again on easy mode only to find out that it is broken after hours of playtime. Finally I killed it from the hard disk. Shame on the developer.

Dead Space (2008)

Beautiful space station door simulator

No, this is not an absolute must buy as described in one of those reviews, probably written from one of these EA owners. Take a space station, fill it with monsters like in system shock and ready is the recipe to sell endless games to unambitious gamers. Buy it if you are one of the guys who always like to open doors because there are too much of them included. For a few doors you have to use a technical magic spell to slower the time because you will get hurt otherwise. Perhaps this shall bring some variety in the game?! The graphics are beautiful like the sound system. The atmosphere is cool and the foes reminds me to movies like the thing. I had the effect that the scary feeling of the monsters decreased fast. The graphics are as good as the camera perspective is bad. Camera view and perspective to control the protagonist on the pc are awful. It's difficult to see what happens especially when monsters are attacking. The character is running around in a suit for deep-sea divers which means he reacts clumsy and slow in contrast to the fast enemies. Perhaps he can't jump due to his armor. Nobody warned me about this before buying it. I got lost in these world of corridors and doors. Using the bad implemented 3D map wasn't helpful, too. Perhaps it would have been better to program an additional map for this 3D map to be able to get the orientation. And yes, I'm not willing to draw my own map anymore for games like this. That was the reason I stopped playing after a view hours. I got the hang of it. The whole environment looks too similar. Perhaps it would have been helpful if EA had played one of their endless old shooters to compare it with this bad bargain.

Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

One further bad game in the gog shelf...

... you can't delete on your own. Help, I really wanted to like this title. I bought this game in a nice carton version when it first came out, but it was unplayable. Recently I bought the gog version and under Win 10 64 BIT it worked the first time. I must admit that I tried several times to get into the predecessor fallout games, but without success. I hated the boring and time consuming turn based combat of both first fallout games. In Arcanum you have the possibility to use a real time option for the combat with the result that the combat in real time is totally fast, flat and uninteresting. The music is nice but due to the permanent loop absolutely nerving after hearing it dozens of time therefore you will hate this music fast. The 2D art style and models are drawn very nice, I like these old graphics. I played until level 16 and solved a lot of quests but all the time I felt lost in this world. You will have to run around endlessly, speak to each person and really don't know what to do. The cities are confusingly big especially Tarant. To run from one corner to the other takes as much fun as filling out the annual tax declaration. All the time I had the feeling that the game will need a few more time to ignite but it didn't. Yes, some turns in the story were funny, but on the the other hand not that exceptional in my point of view. Playing Arcanum I always had in mind what the hell am I doing here? What did I make wrong with arcanum or these fallout games which everybody find ingenious?

Arx Fatalis

Extreme atmospheric gaming pleasure

This game belongs to my best list. I could finish this version combined with the free arx libertatis fan mod. I couldn't play the gog version alone because I had no menus in the game to be able to start the game. I needed two attempts to finish the game because of the big amount of game bugs which aren't fixed in the game after all today patches. The level with the dwarven mine destroyed all of my success. I couldn't create a special sword which was necessary to finish the last quest and had to start again. So if you want to see the end titles don't forget to have a big list of savegames. Please consider that the puzzles are brainsick. It will be necessary to watch endless youtube videos to solve them. Why then 5 stars? Beside that you will find the most interesting magic system of all computer games. You will have to draw runes in the air to create spells. The population in this game is awesome like the music and the sound system. Trolls, goblins or rat men character models are fantastic. If you only play 5 minutes arx fatalis, a dark but absolutely charming world under the earth, you will totally forget your everyday life. I build up a mage with additional fighting abilities to beat the game and had a lot of fun except the awful puzzles.

Might and Magic® 9

Godlike soundtrack, very below average game

This game is only worth buying because of the wonderful soundtrack composed by Paul Anthony Romero which added the main part of atmosphere of the game. Only buy it therefore as cheap as possible. Might and magic IX was this kind of title which always has his problems. I got this version to work with the help of dgvoodoo under Windows 10 64 BIT. It never really worked under 98 or XP. I played it until late in the game but got the hang of it due to brainsick puzzles and nosferatu enemies in a dark area. My party had a high level but no chance against them. I wasn't willing to level up the party anymore because the game totally sucked at this point. At a special stage in the game you will have to make suicide with each party member to reach a new area in the game!!! What a weird and sick story decision. If I had known this before buying the game I would have skipped it. Shall this document the later fate of 3DO? The story of the game isn't worth mentioning it. I really liked the colorful cartoonish style of this open world. The jupiter litech engine is shining. The collecting mania worked so far and some magic spells were cool. The enemy models were drawn with lifeblood. Count it all together and it couldn't save this title.
