The first two hours after I installed the Hyperian Pack was a blast. I loaded my current fairly new game in progress, about 40 hours in, and wondered when the mission would pop to get the ship. I did not not have to wait long. Finding the ship is pretty straight forward, but you have to wait for it to get back to Paranid space, a couple of minutes, and when I landed on it and talked to the captain he handed me the keys. But there was a second part to the mission, gathering some supplies, and I needed three Programmable Field Arrays. Rats, I've been selling them off for hours. I set myself up in a Katana by the gate in Hatikva, and a couple of minutes later two K's and a I showed up, with all of their friends. There where some Argon ships around and one K bellied up to a station and died so I just sent a scout ship around gathering the multitude of crates. In the meantime I scored three more PE's for my fleet. After the dust settled I had four of the Field Arrays so I went back, and was handed the keys to a second Hyperian. Both ships came with very experienced captains as well. Not sure if that's how it's supposed to go down, but it was nice. As soon as I got both ships a Phonex pirate ship was causing trouble in Bright Promise, right next door, so I headed over there to test one of these bad boys out. The battle was evenly matched, until I ran out of countermeasures. He was ripping me to shreds as I backpedaled and realized his range was much better than mine. I switched to Hyperian number two and finished him. Two hours of pure fun, and more to come in the future I'm sure. There are many small but nice improvements in the 7.50 version and the Hyperian Pack is a no brainier, well worth the price.
I haven't played a twin stick shooter since the '90's, but this looked interesting, so I picked it up. Man, I'm not sorry I did, having a lot of fun with this one. I give it 5 stars for the music, graphics, and gameplay. The game does a great job of scaling the difficulty with the player, so the first level is about right when you go back there with a character that is more advanced, it's a lot harder than the first time you played that level. When you respawn you have three choices of character and weapon load out, and the one you pick dictates the strategy going in to a large degree. If you have unlocked a lot of weapons they may or may not show up here, it's kind of a tough choice. Do I get the plasma assault rifle and a character that I don't prefer or the dude with the shield and a simple pistol? Weapons that you have unlocked also have a chance of dropping during your run, so you may get lucky and end up with the perfect load out. When you progress to the next level your health is not restored, so you go in all banged up if that is your condition. I just feel that the game is balanced so well that I am always challenged, sometimes a bit overwhelmed, but never bored.
Been waiting for this game for a very long time. Not this title specifically, just a decent game of American football. And Legend Bowl is very good, but difficult. I used to love the old Madden, but EA abandoned the PC market in '85 for many years. When I look on their site now, they want you to sell your soul practically to get Madden (not to mention those racing games I used to enjoy). At least on GoG you get the games for keeps. So I just started playing Legend Bowl in the last few days. It is a hard game, but I don't feel like it is cheating on me. I've already shown some improvement. I can match a AI opponent touchdown by touchdown, I just can't seem to kick the point after. In fact, I can't kick at all. I did the tutorial a couple of times, took me about 20 tries to kick 3 field goals. My punts usually go about 5 yards, but I still try, instead of going for it on 4th down. It is a familiar mechanic for games where you kick, you stop the arrow to lock in the direction with a button press, then the power meter ramps up and you let it rip. The power meter tops out in about one second flat and you're kick has already failed at that point. I am confidant I will get the timing down eventually. The game is no slouch on defense, I've had perfectly timed passes knocked down, but I've got lucky and caught poorly thrown balls that the defense bobbled attempting an interception. There are a lot of little things that make the game great, like the retro music, and the trash talk. The game don't skimp out on the play book either, I am impressed by the number of plays available. So far I've only played a few scrimmage games, got the running plays and passing plays down pretty good so far, I just need work on the kicking aspect. Well worth the money, weather it is on sale or not.
I was in my 20's and had already left the nest when the Atari 2600 came out. I never played Mario in my life, and I find platform games frustrating. For some reason I'm really having a blast with this title. I'm using a game pad, I wouldn't even try it without. I bought it because of the incredible art style, and I'm really enjoying it so far. I realize it will get harder as I go along, and I may lose interest before I finish it. That's OK, I feel like this was money well spent.
I find the game very hard to put down once you start. Some say it's too confusing without a tutorial, I had no problem figuring it out, it's half the fun actually. The little people that make up your crew have the most unique personalities. I had a character in one game that just made me laugh the whole time. He was accident prone, set fires as he worked sometimes, but he did not work very hard compared to his shipmates. He would stay up late at night and eat two meals instead of one. The crew members have relations with each other. In one game two of my best hated each other, eventually a fight broke out, a real bloody brawl. That was a very promising game as I had made good progress but I ended up losing that one when a fire destroyed practically everything. I now know to open the airlock before the fire consumes the whole ship. So you may have to do a couple of run thru's before you figure out everything. And anything can happen. I lost my shuttle more than once. A pirate ship and a friendly jumped in, I was too weak to fight so I payed. When my shuttle went over to the pirate ship with my payment the friendly ship boarded the pirate ship and killed them all. The pirate ship became a derelict, but my shuttle was stuck over there and I had no way to retrieve it, game over. I also lost the shuttle trying to jump before the pirate ship jumped in, but the damm shuttle would not stay in its bay. Its supposed to lock when you prepare to jump, so that may be a bug. So the game is still in development, I've seen some good updates since I bought it, but it is already very playable and fun as it stands now. Oh, and I had almost forgotten how good pixel art can look. The art style is very nice in this one.
I love train sims so this should of been a insta-buy for me, but I held off on this one due to the bad reviews. I even passed when it was on sale, so I ended up paying full price. (don't regret it though). The dev's got the train mechanics down pretty good. The track laying is great, the trestles and tunnels that are built on the fly are amazing. The switch signals allow you to route trains and control the flow of traffic. All of this is great, I love it. OK, now the bad. I almost deducted two stars because of the annoying AI players. The artwork, or actually the character's that are the AI players, do not match with this game. Not a one of them looks like a legitimate rail baron, they are cartoon character's. And they have annoying cartoon voices always chiming in. Then they put in this thing where you can hire a spy to steal tech from your opponents and sabotage their trains, etc. The AI players do it constantly, and they always tell you all about it (annoying voices). I've played many games with spy's you could hire, and it did not bother me, but it don't fit well with this game in my opinion. There is a financial aspect, stock market, issuing bonds, etc. Like a rail baron game should have. I did not even know it was in there at first. So I've played the game quite a bit in the week since I bought it. I will probably never finish a game, I like the early game, laying out my tracks, optimizing the traffic, especially around my biggest cities. I ignore the AI players and just play with my trains. They sabotage my train, its just another break down to me. About 2-3 hours in I get tired of listening to the AI players so I quit. Next time I always start a new game and do it all over again. I do get a lot of enjoyment out of playing this game, but I'm not sure who the target audience is supposed to be here. It's like there where two teams working on this, the team working on the trains nailed it, but the rest of the game is not a serious train sim. It's a cartoon.
For me, designing the ships and changing them often is the most fun part of the game. To start with, you don't have the resources to build really big and powerful ships, but it is already fun at that point. As you progress, your designs become more powerful and successful. There is a real strategy to ship design in this game. I like to build my ship out from a sort of core ship deep inside. When you get the outer parts blasted away you can speed off to safety with a small one, and regenerate where it is safe. I'm at a point now in my current game where my best ship is less than half the size of the enemy's bigger ones, but I can rip them apart very quickly, it's a blast.
