I had seriously underestimated the enjoyment that I would get from this game. The characters are adorable, and resemble the art style of Studio Ghibli. The plot is really well thought out, the progression is well paced, the atmosphere is excellent, the boss fights are fun and a bit challenging, but most of all the controls are absolute perfection. You feel like you can accomplish anything once you get all of the upgrades, which makes the game that much more enjoyable. If I were to compare this to any other game, it would be Hollow Knight ... except a much more light-hearted version.

I hate to be the guy that brings down the rating on a game like this, but I have to be honest with my experience. I thought the developers did an excellent job replicating the feel of early SCUMMVM games, but I thought this entry was a bit too similar to Maniac Mansion. I really don't mind it when a game pays tribute to classic games from the past, but I found that this was a bit too close to it's source material. To be honest, I thought this was a far less interesting version of Maniac Mansion with not much to offer on it's own in terms of originality. All it made me want to do was quit the game and just play the classics.

This is a pretty great little game that pays tribute to a number of RPG's and action-adventure games from the past. It is a bit short, but it offers a few unique features that make it worth playing. I found the storyline and art style to be very fitting for the game, but I wasn't crazy about the CRT filter the developers used as an overlay. I don't mind CRT filters in general, but I think it could have been a little better. I was also a bit disappointed by the general direction that the player was given. It was sort of similar to the style of Zelda 2 for the NES, where the player is expected to find certain items to move beyond an area. Unfortunately I ended up beating the game by accident (I didn't know it was the last boss) and when I tried to restore my game, it put me back at an old checkpoint. I was hoping to 100% the game and get all of the items (especially the ring), but this mistake made me give up on that idea. That being said, this game is easily worth the price, so I highly recommend picking it up and giving it a shot.

When I first started to play this game I wasn't sure what to think. The graphics are extremely impressive, but I didn't find the storyline all that interesting. I was also immediately put off by two things. #1. The text was a bit small for the screen, so I had a hard time following along with the dialogue. #2. The sound that the main character makes when he walks is extremely annoying. I eventually got used to it, but the developers should have made an option in the settings to turn off the footstep sound. Once I got past these minor issues I really began to enjoy the game. The setting is incredible, the movement is smooth, the music is excellent and the characters are mostly well-developed. The only issue I had with the gameplay was the somewhat confusing controls. I understand what the developers were doing with the secondary weapon and healing items, but I found them to be a bit hard to get used to during tense battles. I'm not sure how I would improve it, but I just thought it was worth mentioning. Otherwise this is a really excellent game to pick up and play. I was going to give it 5 stars, but the problems that I mentioned set it back by one star.

The developers of this game thought it was necessary to have you agree to their terms of service in order to play the game, which includes the fact that YOU DO NOT OWN A COPY OF THE GAME. They explicitly state that you are only being granted a license to use the game, but you do not own an actual copy of the game, which goes against everything GOG supposedly stands for. Also, part of the agreement states that they are free to collect your data, so it actually comes preinstalled with spyware. I can't believe the developers of Steamworld are pulling this crap. What's even more surprising is that GOG seems to be okay with it.

This is one of those games that starts out a bit slow, but gets a little better over time, until the game takes a giant dump on you with its frustrating game design. Like the title says, the controls are a bit clunky, but you sort of get used to it over time. The problem comes in a little later when you have to retrace your steps through each "dungeon", which ends up become nothing more than a frustrating pain. I actually made it to the last stage in the game, but ended up giving up and uninstalling the game because of the frustrating controls and lack of health items. Believe me when I say that you will be EXTREMELY short of health by the end of the game, and you have no meaningful way of obtaining health items. This leads to repeated deaths and frustrating checkpoint placements that cause you to replay a section over and over and over again. It's not so hard that you can't make it through these sections, but I eventually reached the point where I basically didn't care anymore, and just give up out of frustration and boredom. I also wasn't a fan of the childish (and often sexual) jokes that were scattered throughout the game, which made it hard to play with my son. This could have been a modern classic with the right developer behind it, but it ended up being a very mediocre game with little reason to go back to it in the future. Worth picking up for $5, but nothing more.

This is one of those games that can easily pass you by without noticing because the cover art looks a bit babyish and somewhat dated, but the game is actually really great! It's a solid platformer that reminds me of the classics from the Apogee era. I've only managed to play through the first stage so far, but I've really been enjoying the experience. Well worth picking up for the price!

This was a very well done point and click adventure done in the style of classic like King's Quest, Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, etc . It did a great job paying tribute to the classics of the past, and even made a number of fun pop culture references. I will say that the game was a bit short and the setting got a bit repetitive after a while, but I still had a lot of fun with it. The puzzles were pretty straight forward, but there were a few times where I had to check out a walkthrough. To be honest, I probably should have figured them out on my own, but I don't think my brain was firing on all cylinders today. That being said, you can't complain about the price, but I would gladly pay $5 for the game. Well done team!
