Good

A nice little rogue game, that I would describe as a mix of Spelunky, Rogue Legacy and Zelda. A scavenger at night and a merchant by day, the game is not an an RPG, but more of an action adventure with combined with a mini shop game. You kind of scavenge certain dungeons (within a limited time frame) to get parts = money and in effect upgrade either your armour, weapons, magic or your own shop. The combat seems a bit difficult at first but it's very fair. Every time you enter a dungeon it's maze-like architecture is randomly generated. But there are still rules, which you can uncover by taking hints of other scavengers who didn't make it. There's a ticking clock element, where are a dungeon guardian is starting to pursue you after you spent too much time in the dungeon. Honorable mention: nice pixel art and some neat animations. The music is nice too. Unfortunately it's a bit short, the village is way too small and therefore the game lacks a bit of scope. The shop system adds some additional hours, but overall it's a pretty short affair. It's not possible to give half stars, but I would give it 3,5 out of 5 stars. I would definitely recommend it if it's on sale for everyone who likes rogue games.

Good, but not in large doses

Moonlighter is a mix of dungeon-crawler & shop simulator. Our main goal in this game is to obtain valuable materials from dungeons, as well as progress in them, and later sell them in our shop. We can spend earned money on shop & gear upgrades. The crafting system is well made, each class of weapons has 2 branches - we can go for raw damage or slightly less damage but with special passive elemental buff. However difference between armor pieces is based purely on statistics variation they provide (more defense but less speed etc.). Combat - There is abundance of different hostile creatures that vary regarding in which dungeon we are and how far we ventured in it. We have for our disposition variety of weapons, each class features unique basic and special/heavy attack. We can also bring pets (those are extra cute UwU) to combat that will aid us and/or provide passive bonuses (e.g. stun on attacks). This part is mostly polished and well done. Shop-keeping - This part is really interesting and well made except for economy balance, we just keep bringing more valuable items, customers keep paying more so we can keep up with rapidly rising costs of next level gear, potions and other upgrades.. the progress seem only virtual. I must admit that "Between Dimensions" DLC is kind of letdown. It provides alternative way to pass through certain level of dungeon and we even get special weapon for it.. but those seem kind of high risk to use since they drain health on their secondary attack mode which render them barely useful, and we can't keep 'em. As for technical state, the game is rather bug-free (except for occasionally disappearing materials/arrows). We get cute pixel art for graphics (loving the animations), music after a while might feel too repetitive though. Main drawbacks: -Repetitive & grindy -Majority of items we find are cursed and we have to manage them manually each time, it would be fine if it wasn't for almost every item. -Lore is near to non-existant

Surprisingly Refreshing

In this Action-Adventure, you run a shop, and to get the items to sell, you dive into randomly-generated dungeons. The dungeon part is fun, even if the combat takes a bit to get used to, but what really surprised me is how much fun it is to run the shop. You set prices based on customer reactions and relative worth of similar items, beat the snot out of thieves, and take custom orders. As you progress, you upgrade your shop, and use some of the materials you findd to craft better gear and make it deeper into the various dungeons. It's pretty simple, but oddly satisfying. The bells and whistles are really great, too. Naturally, there isn't much story in a game like this, but there's a very rich lore for those willing to dig into the game and inspect every item. The graphics are pretty good, and the items and environments are varied and interesting. Especially impressive are the animations; a LOT of talent and effort went into the surprisingly smooth animations of just about everything. Perhaps my favorite is the soundtrack, though; it's largely orchestral, but unlike most orchestral soundtracks that are bland and fade into the background, this one was deep and emotional at times; moody, even. The Between Dimensions expansion isn't bad, but unless you're really screaming for more Moonlighter after the main adventure is over, I think it'd be okay to pass on this one. It's one new dungeon, which has new items, and allows you to craft new gear, of course, but the 5 new items in each category each look the same. You also have a new barter mechanic, but you never know what's going to be offered or what you'll need to trade for it, so it's hard to prepare until you get the new vendor, who simplifies the whole process. In terms of challenge, the new dungeon is pretty long, but you can unlock shortcuts, and the final boss isn't too difficult.

Nice game, but really buggy...

The only reason why I don't think it deserves its 5 stars is because of the bugs. Maybe I will make a complete list later since most of the bugs don't affect the player a lot, but there are others that do: - Some items cannot be discovered (desert rope), making it impossible to upgrade some armor - The performance is not that good, specially if you upgrade your character movement speed

A Shopkeeper Roguelite

I basically copied my steam review of this game I bought it again on GOG because I enjoyed it very much and wanted a drm-free version. First off with the bad stuff no option to change aspect ratio but I suppose you can change that with graphics drivers software but haven't tried it myself I have a 16:10 screen this game is locked at 16:9 but still not bad if you don't mind the thin black bars. If you are mostly a pc user playing with mouse and keyboard well there is some good news and bad news the current key bindings are terrible at least for me especially if you have a rather wide keyboard it will make world of a difference if you change them which thankfully the game lets you. I personally prefer the keys not too close to each other I simply swapped the movement keys wasd to numpad keys 8456 and the attack defend inventory to wasd and others to either again near numpad key and wasd except for the space bar, alternatively use a controller if you have one. The game isn't bad but something getting use to, due to its unique nature you are a shop keeper during the day and a dungeon crawler by the night. It has a nice money loop which gives you better purpose not just upgrading your stuff but running a market as well and accumulating as much gold coins as possible like a true capitalist. The music is nice in this game, the story is ok so far honestly haven't played enough to recommend but overall loop is great each room has a slightly different layout with a fixed area and different biomes to discover and hidden treasures etc. Lastly combat is more strategic in a sense you have to find the right angles and use obstacles to your advantage and retreat before you loose all of your loot. My only complaint is there no mouse support it would make a few things a lot easier to navigate with but its a console port so what you expect but don't let that discourage you its a game worth playing so try it.
