I would love to see a version of this game that does not rely on random events that are so punishing. Managing a ship and crew and combat etc is VERY well done, but the difficulty is insane. I eventually gave up and used cheats. Unlimited money, I had a fully upgraded ship and unlimited ammo, still couldn't beat the final boss. Shame, it was a good idea, poor execution.
Empire Earth fan here. The constraints on single player make the campagins bland and unenjoyable. The upgrade system is heavily restricted and the gameplay lacks depth. Once the novelty of moving between eras wears off there is little to recommend. The game also broke on me when my soldiers would stop attacking the enemy making the game unplayable. If you really REALLY need more empire earth, get it on discount. If you are an Age of Empires fan and want to see what it's like to skip through eras, it's ok I guess. Not a great experience for me. Glad I got it on special.
I don't know if the game is any good, so I didn't want this to be a 1/5 review, but it's unplayable. No mods or recommendations worked for me. If I dig deeper, maybe it's doable, but I don't see why I should spend hours of my time trying to make a game work when I've got another 100 sitting there waiting for me. So take this merely as a warning that some people are having issues running the game, but that's not a reflection on the actual game.
People saying it's a bad remake... Erm, I played the original and this, and this isn't a remake as far as I know, it's a remaster... ? Anyway, this game needs a remake, as the basics are flawed. AI pathfinding: messed up. Save your game regularly, it will bug so bad you can't move on (only occasionally). BUT! The experience is still rather good. You can (once you build a radar building... thing...) play it as an RTS by jumping into said building by leaving your tank/mech behind and placing buildings and turrets and directing your units. Or , you can stay in your tank/mech and go in face to face. Both versions are good, but neither is perfect. It's like you can play either version of this game and change back and forth as you please. That is the strength of it for sure. Personally, while I like that you can fly a tank in and even if it blows up you can eject and tell a nearby ally to eject so you can take their tank and keep going. I found it annoying that if I die, end of the game (ie Mechwarrior). Whereas if I stay in the radar centre I can keep directing units assuming that no one wipes out the building I'm standing in. But that's the beauty of the game. While it's flawed. The story is good but poorly executed. Cutscenes are directed by a snail who can't edit to save its life, Blah blah, circa 2000 problems. EITHER WAY YOU PLAY this game is good enough to make most players enjoy I think.
I get what they were going for. I think the first game would be my bag, but I can't play it... thanks for crashing before startup by the way... first game sounds good, this is just random encounters over and over again, as far as I have seen. Good tech demo but poor execution.
Worse controls, but a much richer world in which to explore. Puzzles and characters are about the same (variable and generally decent respectively). Finish the trilogy if you liked the first 2 games. If you struggled through the originals, then give it a miss.
