First off, great game, but really, get the second. get FSO installed and then get the mod for this game to be played in that game, which is free. https://www.gog.com/game/freespace_2 http://www.fsoinstaller.com/ great game and all, but can be done in the second game for free and with improved graphics, looking more like 2014 rather than '98.
The steam Version of this game has workshop integration, which you will need to be able to get additional maps i guess, since the developers are too cheap to host them themselves. first, I have been told the shading has been improved, but i can't see it.. the shadows aren't really visible to me, it's beneath me, not in view, and the other ships, i can't really tell you, cause every time one enters my screen the game lags, it kind of hiccups, and by the time i can react i am dead, every time, knowing where they are and all beforehand, dead, dead, dead, over and over. This is the beginning of the NSDF campaign, that's what I have tried. this happens the first time the drone pops up in the training mission as well. it has full HD now, not that you can tell that.. even on a PC like this that's LESS than 3 weeks old. it is a loveless work, if you have good memories of this game from the old days as i had, I gotta tell you, go back to Freespace Open, this is a bust. you can't reach Rebellion really, they just have their little Muppets come talk in circles with you, like this: https://www.gog.com/forum/battlezone_98_redux/what_about_the_old_classic_version a Redux should include the original for historical purposes, most do, this doesn't. a games modding shouldn't be singular platform and should instead be hosted by the producer for the access of all, and not just Steam, using their workshop (trying to be even cheaper than cheap, they want to be able to work for profit and their supplies should be free so YOU should pay for that). so if you want a DRM free version, let me point out you will have the campaigns and they really don't care about the rest, it's on you. Buyer beware. you will want the Steam version for the workshop (Gog will love that remark i am sure, but it is truth (PS. it's also 5$ more here at GOG to miss out on the workshop). Isn't Galaxy itself a form of DRM? it is REQUIRED for multiplayer. the original was better. needs an anti-redux mod.
so i buy this title, i have it on steam as well, so i already know what it is like and all, but heres the thing, it is 22 1/2 Gigs.. so it gets released on GOG, and before the first day they establish a "hotfix" to cause the game not to auto update, ok, thats all fine and dandy.. but tell me, WHY do you have to swap all the rest of the files so fast? rather than let us download it as it was (i was 4 gigs from finished (1 file)) but now, before i even get it installed i get to download the entire thing again, i was working on it from yesterday morning.. get up today to finish (the second day it is on GOG) and the files are all different, so now I get to DL the WHOLE thing again.. not that GOG can't detect that because they can, and to prove it consider how they put a dot on a game that you don't have the current version of.. why change it that fast? is this a game to keep us downloading so we can't enjoy what we bought? you already put out a fix, leave it alone..
garbage.. if you think trying to learn to play this game without this DLC is hard, i dare you to install it.. i got wiped out 4 times in a row in less than 10 minutes each time by marauding militia.. making learning to play this impossible, instead i have to uninstall and reinstall to get rid of this DLC. this DLC isn't fun at all, quite the opposite really, they would have done better adding a campaign to learn to play the game..
