Dungeons 3

A pleasant surprise!

Bought this on a whim when it was on sale. I run this on LinuxMint 20.2 Cinnamon. The version of Dungeons 3 is 1.7 in game, and by install file version 1.7 build 11.512e183.36232. It's a great real time strategy game built on the Unity game engine. It's good fun, the graphics are well done, and their is lot's of different ways to choose to build up your army. What also surprised me is that the game is really performant in terms of load times on a six year old PC, and I have not experienced the micro stutter problem like with other Unity games on Linux. You are given both a long single player campaign, and then skirmish modes. The graphics are influenced by and a parody of World of Warcraft 3. The only few things I can say bad about this, is you can't skip all of the dialog in the campaigns. The supposedly funny dialog gets old pretty quickly. And there is a few minor bugs I experienced. Once I lost sound. A few times there was a graphical error of showing long strands of graphics where I think characters had moved from, and whenever you discover the pen pushers in the dungeon, the dialog says you found spiders. It is also certainly concerning that the multi player is some mystery service and no LAN option. Though I have not used it as I play single player. Lastly, the amount of DLC content is also concerning. I don't want to keep paying for a game.

Psychonauts

Classic! Highly recommended!

This game is utterly brilliant in graphics, voice acting, music, plot, and game play even if it is fifteen years old. Buy it if you like this genre of game! I play it on LinuxMint 20 Cinnamon 64-bit. Psychonauts version 1.05 (gog-4). It installs, plays, and performs very well. The only issue I had was that the game defaults to a windowed low screen resolution setting when you first play it. Going in to the graphical settings, for some reason the actual buttons and check mark boxes to change this are all out alignment. It took me nearly twenty minutes of randomly moving the mouse around to find each one to set to full screen and maximum resolution and graphical settings. This is almost a deal breaker, so just be aware that you might encounter this if it is not unique to my setup. I just did some research and found a work around for this problem on the GOG forums. https://www.gog.com/forum/psychonauts/how_to_change_resolution_on_manjaro_linux It really would be better if GOG and/or Double Fine would correct this issue.

Bridge Constructor

A casual but repetitive game.

I ran this on LinuxMint 20 Cinnamon 64-bit. Bridge Constructor version 1.3. It installed, played and performed flawlessly. I returned the game for a refund. I found it too simplistic, casual, and repetitive. I think this is a game for more casual players that want to play fifteen or twenty minutes at a time and come back to it another day. The puzzles did increase in difficulty over time, but it really is the same thing over and over. Also the in game music is really limited. It's probably less than a thirty second loop. Turn off and listen to your own selection of music. If you are a casual game player that likes to work hard on puzzles you'll like this.

Hollow Knight

Boring side scroller

I ran this on LinuxMint 20 Cinnamon 64-bit. Hollow Knight version 1.4.3.2. It installed, runs, and performs very well. I didn't like the game play. I found it boring and repetitive, and returned it for a refund. That being said, I am picky about side scroller games. For perspective I've so far liked Terraria, Fez, Un-Epic, and Guacamelee in that order.

Pillars of Eternity: Definitive Edition

Fun, but not the D&D universe.

Playing this on LinuxMint 20 Cinnamon 64-bit. Pillars of Eternity is version 3.07.0.1318. It runs and performs well and I only encountered a few minor bugs. One time a stronghold quest did not show the assigned character's name and showed an error in place of it. A few times characters get stuck in objects or walls. It's infrequent enough to not be an issue when you save frequently. This game is much like the Baldur's gate series. The plot is good and so is the game play. It's down fall is that they are not using the familiar D&D universe (class, race, monsters and such). I unfortunately understand this to be a cost of licensing issue. But they also spell common words weird and use unusual names with with weird pronunciations in English. Such that it feels very much un-familiar and takes a lot of time in the game to get somewhat used to it. Also, the crafting, enchanting, and bounding of items I'm not really fond of and have not used it. So far it doesn't seem like it is necessary. Recommended as long as you can live without the D&D universe.

Railway Empire Complete Collection

Lacks quality control, in development.

Because of the moving goal posts of updated software (I hope), I don't think it is fair to review games like Railway Empire Complete Collection without mentioning the operating system it's running on and the version of the game. I play this on Linuxmint 20 Cinnamon 64-bit and am using the current version available to me as 12/14/2020 when I posted this, which is 1.13.0.25925. I really like the game and hope it will improve over time. But that being said, I love trains and there is little options for train games on Linux operating systems. That's the only reason it got two stars rather than one. For what I got even at 25% off full retail, it was too much money for the current state of the software. I say this because the game is utterly full of bugs, and the tutorials and documentation is very lacking. Shame on GOG for not displaying this as in development. That's a real disservice to it's customers. Another gripe is that this is a bundle of the base game with all the DLC add ons, rather than one file for the whole game. When it updates I will have to download and install nine files. You are absolutely and pretty much required to go to youtube and other web sites to learn how to use signals, stations, and other aspects of the game that the in game "Tutorials" and "Tips and Hints" section don’t tell you about. Signals do indeed work when you understand how to use them in conjunction with stations and assigning station tracks for each train, or use stations with signaling control. I've never used it with the signaling turned off as I like it because it is realistic. GOG is limiting me on text amount, so instead of hearing what I like about it, you get a partial bug list: Game freezes when deleting a saved game. Headhunter still gets employee on fail. Sometimes new goals in scenarios don't come up when you've completed the current ones. Sometimes goals can't be completed because they require interaction with territories that are blocked off. Don't recommend.

Kerbal Space Program

Too complex and difficult to play

I really had high hopes for this game title. I've read it being well liked by a lot of people and bought it very much discounted thankfully as I don't like the game. I was warned before hand that it has a high learning curve and expected I'd be doing a lot of learning. I've spent hours playing the tutorials and researching how to do things on web sites, and I still can't play the game properly without getting extremely frustrated. I've spent more time trying to learn how to play this game than any other game ever I've played. I don't think the developers got the difficulty and game play balance correct with this game. I don't recommend it. That being said it runs flawlessly on LinuxMint 18.3. But the tutorials have a number of bugs and missing information that make it that much more difficult to learn how to play this game.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun

Amazing game!

This is an amazing real time strategy game. The artwork, graphics, music, and game play are all excellent. And there is many ways to get through each level,, you are not lead around by the nose in a linear fashion. It's somewhat reminiscent of Satellite Reign that I enjoyed very much, but with out the building and upgrading of characters and weapons. I will say I found it hard on the default normal difficulty which I believe is just above easy. Only because I didn't understand all the concepts of what the different character abilities could do in certain situations. I had to look up online how to get through several maps that I was stuck on. Although, after playing through the whole game a few more times I began to understand the strategy. Bonus points for allowing the user to skip any video plot scenes. I took off one star because the game is a shorter than I expected, and re-play-ability of the game is limited. I've played through it three times and now fully understand the strategy concepts and have done each variation finishing the maps. I'm probably not going go play the game much more beyond this.

Train Valley 2

Not worth it for the price.

Firstly, the game genre is completely incorrect and misleading. This is a puzzle game that is train themed. This is not what I expected and read a lot of reviews before buying it. If you liked the Railroad Tycoon series, Sid Meier's Railroads!, or even real Railroad simulators where you drive the locomotive, this is nothing like any of those. Plus once you figure out the puzzle of each map, re-playing the game is very limited. Also the total game time is short. I finished all the maps in two evenings. It's really over priced for what you get. Other than that it ran fine on Linuxmint 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit. Install all of the dependencies via terminal command apt install.

Unepic

Not a bad game.

I enjoyed the game. It's a fun side-scrolling dungeon adventure game. I didn't mind the humor that some people thought was childish or annoying. You get to customize how you level up your player and what items you use for combat. What I didn't like about it is the challenges, as I thought most of them are too difficult to do and so you are left out of getting special more powerful items. And after a few times of trying find myself frustrated and bored with it. Thankfully they are not required to finish the game. It only has moderate to low re-play value. As the only thing that changes is how you level up your player and what items you use.
