I ""played"" this all yesterday afternoon, Yes it is a great creative tool...but a frustrating 'tool' It's like using photoshop with a blindfold. IT's overly dark during creation.. Dev, have a preview or finish creation button, or a overlay grid..MAke adding environment a different part of the creation.. BUILDING would be great on a lighter grid,and easier. Because of the dark. Placing objects was a bit hit and miss,. i ended up , just clicking randomly across the 'work' area.. I couldn't work out depth of field. And clicking random gave me different objects. Just clicking around ,not knowing what I am doing I got "open up new content" BUt no reason why I got it... . I wanted a building and got a big long wall.. BIGGEST PROB .. is you have to join 'DISCORD' to get help and new buildings/content..HAY DEV! i supporting you with purchase. OVerall yes it is a good creative tool. but is not a precise tool... WOULD BE BLOODY GREAT TO HAVE A Little car to fly around your creations... like in townscape you can walk around your town now.. very cool.
I played all three at my friends, THE first game is a GEM , a great game, a great open world. The Second game i enjoyed ..hhmm it's good.
As a lover of the silent hunter games this jumped out of the water for me... sadly is it over the top management of ship, logistics and crew management. On a ship or a sub these concerns/duties would be delegated to the first mate or other officers. In fact if the captain heard about crew problems then the first mate and officer staff were not doing their job correctly. I don't mind the "in port" supply and weapons logistics to much , But I wish to be able to turn off some of the day to day crew management ( maybe you can I can see it?) As captain I don't want to worry about the crew not being happy, that is the first mate/ master of arms/doctors problem. if its a realistic 'sim' I should be able to delegate . to much logistics and crew management.
Elite...star ciz... and X4 All have their differences. Elite for that one man verse the galaxy, Star ciz the universe.. X4 Starts the same way, One man verse the universe . Yet soon becomes a fleet, then an empire against the galaxy. You start alone then soon hire NPCs to control your ship, or fleet and even build space stations and space factories etc. You can walk ( limited) around stations. Watch ships come and go, From fighter to giant space carrier-battleships you can climb into any ship and fly them. Space is BIG and in X4 it is broken into sectors with 'jump gates' acting as doorways. There are several factions to work with or fight against ,it is all your choice. A massive sandbox! Overall the game is GREAT and apart from the 'NPC s' has amazing graphics and FX. YET! as expanse and success greets your empire the more time you have to spend in the 'U.I' The game remains challenging .. on a SPREADSHEET! and OH! boy is that spreadsheet as massive as the universe you fly in. Menu after menu, hidden within a menu. I stopped playing for a few weeks, when I came back to the game...i was lost, I had to 're-learn' where every menu choice was hidden.
Thank you GOG for getting this game... This game is like nothing you have ever played before... It does not hold your hand ... and it will destroy you in 30,...no... make the 20 minutes... From the start ,you may think it is a simple ,arcade, 'kind of' asteroid flying game.... BUT it is NOT... You are slowly pulled into its dynamics and then you realise there is SO MUCH MORE. aircraft carriers , strike units, missile strikes, Recon ,fuel, diplomacy, Repairs, ship design.....and...ATOM BOMBS! I have Never finished !! Yet like a mosaicist tied to chair so I cant hurt myself... I keep trying, I keep playing .. It is a "just one more" launch to capture that city, I need to get the fuel... I know it's 1.30 AM and I've got to go to work at 7.... maybe I will call in sick? Just buy this! one of the best .hardest games to play. Every success is a YES!, every fail is, a... "smash my mouse down in disgrace at my failure.... I love it!
DLC DOES WORK.... and x4 foundations is still on GOG... if you brought the game here it should be in your 'game folder' with the updated version available to download. The DLC needs to run on X4 foundations with the new update '7' I 've been playing all night not a glitch, nor a frame drop.. The DLC is not reeaallly my "cup of tea". This DLC , takes you "out" of that open world game and gives you scenarios with in the same 'x universe' that does not directly affect 'your game play world'. The x4 universe has a lot of graphic updates with the new updated version '7'..enjoying the new map icons and smoother flow of graphics.
I remember buying this game after playing a demo "disc" from an 'Amiga' magazine. I was hooked with the flight, the fight and everything... "Back then" the graphics were great. Today, I'm running the redux version 1.12-(AND UPDATES ARE REGULAR.) ************* i wrote this when released, Sadly, this is a dead game now.. no updates since 1.17.... or 1.18 on steam,now 30th Sept2025. It's the same game with some of the old problems fixed. Yet, the ground still 'pops' into view and you can watch building suddenly appear,( which can cause a challenge when "on the bomb run". ) The strange 'flat' clouds are the same.(IL-2 1946-made about the same time-has great clouds. this should have better now.) There are updated 'still' images at the start. The static interiors of B17 have been improved. the Luftwaffe A.I is improving -at the moment (version 1.12 ) they fly a weirdly slow? I have not tried, but I don't think you can fly Luftwaffe planes within a mission yet.(the original you could). BUT it is STILL a GREAT game! It's one of those "just one more missions" before dinner" one more speed up the time just to do the bomb run. Just face off one more Axis attack then I must leave and pick up mum from the shops. IT's ... bugger that, mum can get the bus home I'm on the bomb run now. If you loved, liked ,played the original then give this a chance . the devs have 'promised' more.
Purchased on advice from friend.. love it... a peace, no stress game. At the start u just 'dump'-'click' stuff into place.. but like a game of Othello.. it's very easy to learn .. but hard to master... ( I cant stop screen saving the images.. I might use as birthday card front.) As little touches to the game there are birds that react to changes. would love some balloons and planes...or even boats. Very happy with this .Very addictive
