Description

Dystopika is a small city-builder inspired by cyberpunk and the wanderlust of cities that never sleep.

Place buildings, giant billboards, and towering holograms, working in harmony with procedural generation for landscape, traffic, and lights to create your own future metropolis rich with vibes and ambience. Escape to your own little dystopian dreams (or nightmares).

No goals, no objectives, no wins or losses. Just relax and embrace creative cyberpunk zen. If you love to turn on the cheat codes and just build, this one's for you.

One of the best art tools in its niche.

Dystopika isn't really a game, it's an art tool. You place things, and things occasionally unlock. There are no goals or challenges. In other words, the "function" of your city is completely meaningless, and you can concentrate all your energy on making it look exactly the way you want. The game will even fill in the blanks with procedural buildings if you don't feel like building everything by yourself. And once you have built the cyberpunk city of your dreams, then the real fun begins. The game's photo mode is incredibly robust, allowing you to take pictures or video of you city from whatever angle you like, or put the camera on a track and sweep through the busiest district with the flow of sky traffic. You can pick the weather, the time of day, the lighting, the color filters, and anything else your heart desires. You are literally only limited by your imagination, and your skills with a video editor. And at only $4, it's an absolute steal.

A relaxing game

A relaxing game that seems very comprehensive at first glance. Special mention for the ability to add your own images to the game's buildings. The music is also pleasant and fits well with the game's atmosphere. I highly recommend this game.

Sweet diorama kit

Dystopika is not so much a game as it is a construction kit, a diorama piece, a video toy and somewhat of an art toy as well. It's no Sim City 2077, there are no challenges, disasters or decisions to make, you just plop buildings on your grid, add light brushes and props for extra effects, unlock more props to decorate, discover that some buildings can deploy platform crossing between them when you put them close, add roads and monorail lines for flair, walls for style, remake the central pyramid of Blade Runner because of course you would, add holographic propaganda, even import your own pictures for holographic ads displayed on the side of buildings, and you just enjoy playing with the excellent photo mode, you can also make videos of you going around your city with the camera, with various settings on the keyframes, duration, and movement effects. The music is chill, relaxing synth that wouldn't feel out of place in Blade Runner or when reading Snowcrash or the Sprawl series. While I don't think I'd have bought it full price, it's not super expensive, and there's mod support, which I haven't tried yet but if it's possible to make your own buildings and proprs it's quite cool. Perfect as a relaxing zen garden game of sorts or for making set pieces for an RPG session. Just don't go expecting a game and you'll find plenty of interesting small things to love in Dystopika.

Great game for zoning out

In one of the preview videos, Matt (the dev) describes Dystopika as "a freaky little cyberpunk bonsai tree, right in your computer," and nothing I've tried to write about this game sums it up better. On the one hand, I kind of wish there was some of the traditional city simulator economic management... stuff. But on the other hand, I had absolutely no trouble staying up all night sculpting and pruning my city, adding fun little decorations here and there, so maybe it doesn't need to be Sim Night City? I found this to be a perfect game for just zoning out. The soundtrack is excellent, but it also pairs well with pretty much any vaporwave album out there. From a gameplay standpoint, though, the UI takes some getting used to. Also, if you're a perfectionist who obsesses over right angles and texture clipping, maybe give this one a pass. The road and rail elements are... vexing.
