SoC is the most beautiful game i have ever seen, and i needed to own it. Ive paid full price for it, and im so glad i could. Nothing compares to play within an interactive painting, and im overwhelmed by the beauty of the digital world... Gameplay wise, and compared to HOMAM3, the game is obviously EA, and lacks content, depth and replayability. But, all of that is on the roadmap: random maps, more abilities and skills for units, and more of everything is coming, and im sure, that with time and some DLCs, Songs of Conquest will become a new milestone within its genre...
On paper, the combination of card game, boardgame and strategic RPG sounds like a dream come true. In reality, the game failed to impress me, and to my own surprise, i got bored and uniterested very quick... It surely isnt a bad game, just one, that fails to shine in any of its genres...
I really tried to like this game. I spent 3 hours just for the creation of a perfect party. But, the remake sadly does nothing else, than adding an automap, and a little comfort. You will still play one of the most unfair, frustrating, annoying game of all time. You will die A LOT, without any possibility to prevent it, and you will need to grind like you have never before, because the whole game is designed around being a pain in the ass, and prevent you from proceeding as much as possible... As somebody who hasnt played the original back then, this simply feels like a stress simulator, and i dont recommend it, at all...
Spiderweb games have a special place in my heart. I own more than 1000 games, with lots of praised, big budget titles among them. And yet, the only games i do always return to, are the modern SW games. They are different from all games i have ever played, by which i mean, that they have a charme and magic, that i dont find in any other solo activity. I'll try to explain... Life is tough for me, and living in society is a permanent challenge. When im alone, i want to calm down, relax and lose myself... And yet, dont manage to. Im throwing my hard earned money on everything that promises some relief or even enjoyment, but in the end, just feel empty and burned-out. And cant even tell, if its the games, which are lacking true essence, or if it is me, who is unable to find it... Then, at some point, i re-install one of my Spiderweb games, and my mind finally calms down. And the miracle happens, and i feel like a kid again, that is exploring magical worlds, and is discovering wonders, and burns his brain to find a solution to difficult situations... Maybe its my age, or maybe those games just hit my sweet spot, but when playing those games, i feel like everything is alright. Theres so much love in these titles, so much thought and complexity. And i do love the artwork as well! They are as deep and challenging as you want them to, and yet, they are so simple and intuitive, that they never stress me or feel senseless. Theres always something to do, to discover, to improve, to find out. And when im done, im smiling and feel calm and thankful for the experience. Thank you, Spiderweb Software, for letting some of us dream again...
...if you could really interact with your environment... But, as it is, the starting ward cannot manipulate anything, and many times, you will die, before you even get something stronger. And, even when you do, spells do have (a small amount of) charges, after which they cannot be used for the current level, so that you wont interact with the completely destructible environment most of the time. Which makes Noita "just" a roguelike like many others, with a living environment. After the amazing trailer and the description, im incredibly disappointed about the actual game...
As a long-term player of Spiderweb games, i was expecting a lot from the new brand and the trailer, but was disappointed enormously! Especially, since the depth and complexity of older titles has been streamlined and significantly reduced, to a point, where it hurts the flow and enjoyment, and feels like a step backwards, while at the same time, no real improvements are added to the formula and engine, and old weaknesses remain: Expect the same outdated graphics, a clunky interface, bad overview, and no zoom, just to name a few... As result, the game plays slow and clunky, battles feel shallow and repetitive, and since they dont grant Xp: senseless, and even the story hasnt been able to catch me... I still want to support the company, and am urgently hoping for some big patches that will improve the game to a state and quality, that we are used to. but at the moment, i regret my purchase, at least at this price-point. At least, as long as the game is left in its current state... So, for the time being, i can recommend the game only to those, that want to support the company, and would rather wait for the future developement or a big sale...
