Another timeless jewel

Spiderweb games have a special place in my heart. I own more than 1000 games, with lots of praised, big budget titles among them. And yet, the only games i do always return to, are the modern SW games. They are different from all games i have ever played, by which i mean, that they have a charme and magic, that i dont find in any other solo activity. I'll try to explain... Life is tough for me, and living in society is a permanent challenge. When im alone, i want to calm down, relax and lose myself... And yet, dont manage to. Im throwing my hard earned money on everything that promises some relief or even enjoyment, but in the end, just feel empty and burned-out. And cant even tell, if its the games, which are lacking true essence, or if it is me, who is unable to find it... Then, at some point, i re-install one of my Spiderweb games, and my mind finally calms down. And the miracle happens, and i feel like a kid again, that is exploring magical worlds, and is discovering wonders, and burns his brain to find a solution to difficult situations... Maybe its my age, or maybe those games just hit my sweet spot, but when playing those games, i feel like everything is alright. Theres so much love in these titles, so much thought and complexity. And i do love the artwork as well! They are as deep and challenging as you want them to, and yet, they are so simple and intuitive, that they never stress me or feel senseless. Theres always something to do, to discover, to improve, to find out. And when im done, im smiling and feel calm and thankful for the experience. Thank you, Spiderweb Software, for letting some of us dream again...

Great Game and Developer

This is more of just support for a real hidden gem if you've never experienced this series. It's a well written, and interesting world with choices and multiple methods of making your way through the game allowing for a variety of approaches and outcomes. They simply don't make games like this anymore, and I highly recommend this experience to anyone who has ever been curious. You won't regret it.

Old school, isometric RPG fun

Vogel's classic 'Geneforge' has been remastered and updated for 2021. If you're a fan of his work you'll know what to expect; primitive graphics, minimal sound, rather clunky systems and gameplay, but excellent writing and a well-developed world.

Spiderweb's most original world

Spiderweb remakes its old games every decade or two. This is the latest such remake, and the first remake of the Geneforge series. Of all Spiderweb's old-school RPGs, Geneforge is the most innovative in gameplay, setting and design. It's a fantasy world where the wizards discover magical genetic manpiulation and use it solve world hunger and oppress the masses. You fight with thorn-spitting animal/plant guns, use living tools to manipulate machinery, create packs of mutant monsters, and choose whether or not to risk madness by re-shaping yourself to gain greater power. It's a really fun setting. That said, it's still a Spiderweb game. You're spending most of your time hitting monsters, though there's also minefields to navigate, puzzles to solve, secrets to uncover, and a lot of text to read. The original pre-dates "choices and consquences" as a marketing term, but it still has four or five factions to join, destroy, or ignore, and a lot of different endings. Very replayable. So, why play this? If you're played the original, the remake offers (slightly) better graphics, better support for modern systems, a much more interesting system to customise your creations, as well as plenty of new areas and quests. Compared to other Spiderweb remakes it sticks closer to the original in terms of character development and mechanics, which I think is a good thing. (No skill trees here.) If this is the first time you've heard of Geneforge: this game offers a fun old-school RPG with a lot of content and an innovative setting. If you don't mind simple graphics, clunky UI and iffy pathfinding, and are in the mood for a meaty RPG with a lot of challenging combat and an interesting story in a very innovative setting, go for it. Personally, I love Geneforge as a concept and a setting. The gameplay itself isn't quite up there with the best, and I can't help but feel even more interesting stories could be told in this world. But this is still a very fun and interesting RPG.

So so smooth

I'm a newish convert to Team Spiderweb having only started playing their games from Avernum 3. Jeff may prattle on about how his games are rough and prickly. But he's lying. Spiderweb's games are the *smoothest* RPGs ever made. "Um, where did the last 4 hours go" is something I find myself saying again and again. I was inspired to go back to try some old Bioware games and was horrified at the glacial pace. Someone please slip Jeff a few million dollars as I'm sure there's a AAA RPG masterpiece just waiting to be made.
