Geneforge 1 - Mutagen

My gateway drug into Spiderweb Software

The story in this game has to be one of the most engaging stories I've ever played in a video game. The setup, the plot progression, the characters, the setting, all of it's pretty excellent. There's a lot of care given to fleshing out the three factions and making them all feel believable. I'd put it up there with like, Fallout 1, Chrono Trigger and Halo 2 in the story department. I really dig the science-fantasy setting, and I appreciate that it poses actual moral questions like good scifi is supposed to do. The gameplay is pretty cool too. It's essentially a squad based strategy/tactical rpg but instead of gaining party members along your adventure, you summon them. Pretty neat if you ask me. I did not love some of the dungeons, I found the traps to be real annoying. Most of the truly annoying sections are optional, mind you, but you kind of don't know that your first time around. Kinda bogged the later half of the game down a bit for me, which is unfortunate because that's when the story's at its most engaging. Luckily, the story kept me going. It was worth it too, I got one of the "bad" endings and was still completely satisfied that the story ended with me causing the world to plunge into chaos even though that's literally what I didn't want. I definitely recommend people try this. Genuinely one of the most unique and engaging RPG experiences I've played. In a world of 2-star games that cost a bajillion dollars that nobody wanted to make, give this a shot. Hell, I actually finished it, so that sure counts for something.

IV and V are great

M&M IV and V: World of Xeen is great and is playable without a guide. A jolly good time if you're looking for some good ol' fashioned goofball CRPG fun. I never finished it, but it's good fun. I tried M&M 1 years ago. Don't play M&M 1. Maybe I would have loved it if I played it when it came out, but that game's older than I am and has not stood the test of time. IV and V though, those are worth the 10$ or less. They're not gonna change your life, but like I said, if you're looking for a good time, you can find it here, assuming you boot up the right one.

Buggy but fun

Title basically says it all. It's a fun game with a lot of neat mechanics and a lot going on. Too bad the AI is so ass that you have to actively plan your city around buggy AI to minimize the possibility that your citizens will shit themselves. Why hasn't this ever been fixed?

Redneck Rampage Collection

It's alright

I don't know if it's DOSBOX, my asstastic computer, or the game is just poorly coded, but I'm experiencing a noticable amount of slowdown at times, and considering this is a 2D shooter from the 90's that's kind of ridiculous. Again, my computer is like the oppositte of good, but if I can run games like Quake 3 just fine, which are technically much more advanced games, I feel that I should be able to run this no problem. That said the game is alright. The music is great, but the enemy aim, damage, and range is better than yours (at least on higher difficulties, which yes I understand that is the point of a higher difficulty) making the difficulty just seem largely artificial and not really skills based, and the level desgin is really not good, with bland areas with not much in them. Play it for the humor and atmosphere, otherwise you're probably just better off playing Doom. Again, it's not really bad, it's just once you get past the hillbilly theme, it's nothing you haven't seen before, and nothing that hasn't been done better.

I bet it's actually a great game

I bet this game is great. I created a new character and was overwhelmed by the number of choices I had available to create a character. This is kind of a game that really has something for everyone, and I think that unfortunately is why this game is completely unplayable. As soon as I finished my character creation the game kind of just stopped. I mean certain things worked, the hud showed up, but the actual stuff I was supposed to be seeing was just a black screen. Aslo mouse movements and actions had an extremely delayed reaction time during the character creation process. I don't know if the game has always been this unplayable, but I certainly can't play this in windows 10 (and the unofficial patch didn't help at all when I attempted to download it). Based on other reviews this seems pretty consistant, even the positive reviews point out that it's insanely bugged and flawed. I dunno if I just didn't install the unofficial patch correctly, or if that is bugged too, but either way I would love to actually play this game if GOG added the unofficial patch to the regular download, or if the game just actually got patched to work on modern computers. Either way this game is completely unplayable in its current state, at least on my pc.
