If you never heard of HoMM franchise - well you are either very young or lived under a rock. Go play it - now. Start with this. It's the best HoMM. And you can play it forever because replay value. It's one of the best turn based strategy games ever made. That's it. Oh yes, you want HD mod to download and apply - if you are using modern monitor.
This game is great. If you are looking for great story and interesting quests - then it's not really great - I admit that. But combat and strategy part is outstanding. D&D3.5 rules are applied very very very well. Graphics are nice. Advice: do not play it without unofficial patches! It's buggy as hell! Mandatory mods/patches: Circle of Eight (go with the lite version) and another one... I can't remember it's name... I think it's Temple+ And that's it! Go trip some monsters!
I'm very passionate man - it see a shitty game, and I hug it... Then I kiss it on the forehead and leave it in the boat - with it's shield on top. It then sails to west never to be found again.... I mean what the (bad word). Piranha Bytes really messed things with this one... It's bad, so many things done bad. And to believe that fans of the Gothic defend this bad game is just....I'll just pack my bags and leave... I don't understand you guys, I played Gothic 2 more than... 20, 30 times. This is madness. This game is not worth your time.
This game... is the best... It has so many things done well. I played it more than 20 times... I know, I know that number... is too low, I need to play as mage next time, thanks for reminding me. Now let me tell you couple of things about this wonderful piece of software... First: don't read too much reviews, just trust me: do you like open world RPGs? Yes? Then buy this game. If you don't have "lots" of money buy it on sale. For couple of bucks you can get Gothic 1 and 2 - which is incredible. Today this game comes in "Gold" edition which means it has expansion and base game. This edition game is much much harder than original Gothic 2. It's not really for the new players. Because there's no "classic" version anymore on the net (or maybe there is but I cannot find it) I recommend Gothic 1 for first timers. You will not be disappointed. But if you find classic version of Gothic 2 - play it over Gothic 1. Apart from that, I should mention at least one bad thing about this game... It pains me to say/admit this but... Controls in this game are not really good. They are not bad, they are just... ahhh just play the game, after 10th time you'll be so used to them that you'll think that they are perfect. For the end: there are 3 very very important patches for this and Gothic 1 game that you really need to install if you want to play them on modern systems. Just search the web for patches.
When Gothic was introduced - I was wonderful game in it's time. It offered so many things. Wonderful open world design. NPC were following their daily patterns. You could do so many things right away... It felt so alive and good. I played it at least 15 times. Yes, I'm crazy. Better not tell anyone how much times I played Gothic 2... So what happens when you finish it for the... let's say 3rd time? By then, you have seen all the cracks in the "perfect" game. Sadly there are problems with this game. Not many, but there are problems - 2 big ones: Controls are not good (melee combat as well as magic combat). Play it and you'll understand it. I didn't say terrible controls. I said not good - you can adapt to them but there will be unpleasant situations. (I'll leave them for you to find out because you definitely should play this game despite it's flaws) Second thing is just this: game is, at it's core, unfinished. That can be seen in couple of places quite clearly. But it's nothing extreme. It would be cool to see this game with additional year of development. I know that'll never happen. But man can dream.. For the end: there are 3 very very important patches for this and Gothic 2 game that you really need to install if you want to play them on modern systems. Just search the web for them.
