If we take 2 things like this: 1. community patch is mandatory for this game - it's unfinished without it 2. you do not look at this RPG as "Gothic" game Then this game is... average. 3/5 Combat controls are bad - and that no patch can change, believe me. This is the first Gothic game that I played as a mage from the beginning. Meleee combat is THAT bad, believe me. When I have to play as a mage - it's bad. Everything else is - meh, average. But if we compare it with Gothic 2. It's piece of.. well I don't want to swear. It's one of the worst dissapointments in my life. Piranha Bytes did very bad job. Very very bad job. After wonderful Gothic 2, this is just... yuck Take a big breath and play it as "Generic RPG" game - maybe you'll like it like that. Use magic from the (almost) beginning - you won't regret it. You will regret it when you unlock best magic late in the game and you won't have anything to kill with it. Yes, it's a bad game....
As IWD 2 of course. These games are Baldur's Gate without story and quests. Just almost pure combat - which for me is fine. If you expect good story, char. depelopment, quests and such things... no, this is more Diablo than Baldur's Gate. With that in mind 5/5

Also, if you want to play this game today - you'll need to do some patching/modding because it will not work on Win10 just on double click on icon... Also, you want to install widescreen patch... Just google a patching guide for this game and then you can calmly fireball everything in your path :)
This is really good RPG but it's "little bit" unfinished, hehe. It's, as people already pointed out, unfinished gem. Maybe you'll like it, maybe not - but you really want to try it. Please, for the first time just play it as a mage - it's easiest that way. Or pure melee fighter. Yes, I know that you want to play as gunslinger - it's logical (this is steampunk game). But as I said, this is unfinished and unbalanced game... gunslinger is just much much harder for inexperienced player. Play that way 3rd time :) And of course do not play the game without Unofficial Arcanum Patch by Drog Black Tooth (Current Version: 2.0.2 (June 11, 2020))

For me this is one of the most played RPGs. Gothic 1,2 and this. The best things... More than 4 times played. It's not your typical RPG adventure, believe me. Lot's of sneaking around if you play it without companions. But you get yourself much stronger that way - especially in the last island. Also you can easily screw up your build - be careful with that. Especially when you play it for the first time. Read advices on the internet! And always go for the head backstab!
This game is excellent shooter. Really. AI is good. People are saying that you should mod it before you play it... they are probably right. I haven't played it since 2006... hmmm... Bioshock again or this again...
But also forgettable. And not really replayable. And yes, it hasn't aged well but it's decent - if you can find some graphics mod that would be great. You should play it just for freedom of speech and violence :)
I have to admit - never finished this game. Too hard for me. But it's really nice atmospheric game. I also like the art. I don't know how to rate it's quality of puzzles... they are... ok? 3/5
I had mixed feelings when I started this game the first time. I mean, I played it first time when it arrived to this site. When I saw that you cant run as in Diablo 2 I was... sad. But I persevered and after couple of hours it was just fine. It didn't bothered me much. And then I found out mod: Diablo HD mod (Project code name: Belzebub) I still cant run but now everything looks/feels much better! Now I LOVE the game!
