Primal Planet

Frustrating and aimless

For Metroidvania fans like me: this is not a metroidvania (that does not impact this review) The game feels really good, especially once you're kitted out. However, pretty much everything else is a downside. You never really know where to go, the map is huuuge, and half the time exits are blocked by vines you need fire to get past. I encountered one person in the game who sold the recipe for fire starters, and I didn't have enough skills/items to learn to make them. Shortly thereafter, my village burned down and I never saw her again and was constantly in need of fire. Occasionally the map would tell you where to go before returning to aimless wandering.

Under The Island

Do you like Zelda?

If so, buy it. You know what you're getting and I say that in a good way. I very much enjoyed my time with this world and the exploration is top notch. The combat takes a backseat to the exploration in this one, but it's perfectly serviceable. 5 stars!

Kynseed

A solid game that left me wanting more

I enjoy these kinds of games, with their endless to-do list propped up by a story, however I never felt like the story for this one did enough. Don't get me wrong, the world building is great, and the dark turn in the beginning was amazing, but at a certain point you're just kinda left to your devices while the story really takes a back seat. You occasionally get story quests, but mostly the story quests are "become famous". I don't feel like the activities level fast enough, so I'll either grind the same fights a few more dozen times, or make my 500th bucket, before drifting away. I did enjoy my time with it for the most part. Grade: 3.5 rounded up.

The 13th Doll: A Fan Game of The 7th Guest

Why carry over the worst parts?

Linux: ran without issue I had both 7th Guest and 11th Hour growing up and played them a bunch. I get copying the campiness that we all loved, but why copy the restrictions brought on my PCs that could barely do 3D? Sure the animations were super slow, but that was because Pentium 1s caught fire trying to do anything, and we also didn't know any better! 30 years later, we can all safely call trying to do a tedious puzzle that requires moving pieces 500 times with a 5 second animation for each move just annoying. I'm sure this was a hoot to make, and I'm glad it exists, but I'm here for the vibes of the old games, not the technical limitations.

The Siege and the Sandfox

A good game released unfinished

I've waited months to see if an update would ever come out for this game and it appears it's been abandoned. While the game is quite good, it was released in an unfinished state with glitches and game breaking bugs galore. Had the dev(s) stuck around and polished the game post-release, I could have easily seen this game becoming a standard-bearer of the genre.

Lost Ruins

Not a great game

*Don't be fooled by the tags, this is in no way a Metroidvania (that fact does not weigh against this review) A weirdly horny game about middleschool girls. About the only thing I enjoyed in this game was some nice pixel art culminating with the most painstakingly realized final boss boobies in the business.

Dreams in the Witch House

Point & Click + Timers

I'm clearly in the minority here, but I really did not enjoy my time with this game. I was constantly cold, constantly wet, constantly tired, and constantly hungry. I got to the point where I needed a plank, firewood wouldn't work, no one sold wood, so I guess I was just going to get eaten to death. Maybe don't listen to me, everyone else likes it.

Psychonauts 2

Should have been a movie

I was not looking forward to a sequel to a game that came out decades ago. What're the odds they'd capture the same spirit? Well, to my surprise, they did. However, this game rivals a Kojima game in cutscene length. Often feeling like a movie broken up with dodgy platforming and somewhat bland combat. I enjoyed my time with the first half and felt the game was a bit long in the second half. All of that said, this was well worth the $12 I paid for it!

Tinykin

A Chill, Zen-like Game

This game is very much a "turn your brain off and kinda just meditate" kinda game. It doesn't ask too much of you, it doesn't go too hard, and it doesn't overstay it's welcome. I had a good time just zipping from here to there, always with some little thing to collect or some task to complete. VERY worth the $5 I paid for it. Ending was a bit weird, but didn't detract from the vibes-based gameplay.

Slender Threads

Doesn't stick the landing

A enjoyed my time with this, but was left a bit disappointed with the ending. I loved the art style, the theme, and the general tone. With the exception of one instance where I tried something too early, was told it didn't make sense, and was supposed to know to try it again after triggering something, all of the puzzles were well telegraphed and made sense in world. The game also has a great hint system. Really, my only complaint about the game was the ending is a bit abrupt and unsatisfying. The post-credit sequence was cute however.
