Blackwell Epiphany

Even though the way they tied things together felt a bit forced to me, and I didn't like the ending, I did enjoy both this game and the series overall and would recommend you play it if you like point & click adventures. The characters are good, and there's no moon logic. There is some pixel hunting at times, though, so be prepared for that.

Good game, although the endings are rather bleak. But I guess that's to be expected, given the theme. The (mostly) cozy gameplay and the rather dark story fit together surprisingly well.

Hero of the Kingdom: The Lost Tales 3

A nice, short, casual, linear experience, just like the rest of the series. I think I liked this one a little better than the previous couple games, since it felt like it had less tedious busywork.

Outcast - A New Beginning

I enjoyed this game for the most part, even though it has a couple issues. Exploration isn't very rewarding, as there is not much interesting to discover. The writing is a bit hit or miss, and the ending is downright weak. There are also quite a few fetch quests, which can make the game feel like "errant boy simulator" at times. Story and characters are interesting, even though the character models and animations could've used more polish. The quest tracking takes some getting used to, but once I did get used to it I really liked how it reflected individual quests contributing to larger objectives. Mechanically the game works well, and the dialog system is pretty decent. Side activities felt varied enough to keep me engaged throughout my playthrough.

Do not buy

The game reproducibly crashes in at least 2 places in the Paris catacombs, about 2/3 through the game. The first one (July 7, near passage) I could work around by skipping the cutscene, but for the second (July 8, resistance storage) even button-mashing Esc to bypass the cutscene didn't help, which renders the game unplayable for me. Uninstalled. The game probably isn't worth your while anyway, b/c even though the plot looks interesting, the writing is rather poor, and the characters have no chemistry at all. Add to that some really uninspired gameplay, and you have a very underwhelming experience. Bottom line: save your money.

Mirror's Edge™

Not for me

The game is interesting as a concept study, but it's certainly not my kind of game. I'm not a big fan of platformers in the first place, particularly when I have to find the only viable path while being shot at. And it doesn't help that the game uses a checkpoint system instead of letting me save when it's convenient for me.

Trek to Yomi

A mixed bag

I like the visual style of the game very much. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the story. I had hoped for something like *Seven Samurai* or *Ghost of Tsushima,* but that's not what we get here. Combat is okay, but I had a really hard time with some of the moves, particularly blocking thrusts or dodging arrows. Some kind of training room for practicing moves and combos would've been very much appreciated.

The Gap

Intersting gameplay

Interesting gameplay, but pretty short (I finished it in less than 4 hours, and I'm not a speed-runner). Also, the game gets rather exposition-heavy in the final stretch.

Blackwell Bundle

Good series overall

Interesting plot and characters, and I liked the mechanic of combining your notes to derive further clues from them. Unfortunately that mechanic was dropped in the 3rd game, and only partially brought back in the 4th. The latter also introduced some "find the correct dialog choices" puzzles (which I generally don't like) and had quite a bit of pixel hunting (which I also generally dislike). The graphics and voice acting improved with each game, but the writing -particularly in the 4th game- seemed to get worse. It wasn't terrible, but it started detracting from the experience for me. While the first 2 games were short and sweet, the 4th one felt like it was longer than it should have been. To me at least.

Broken Sword 5 - the Serpent's Curse

Still not back to form

I had hoped this game would be where Revolution Software returned to their former glory, but nope. This is still not it. While the graphics were improved some more, the gameplay hasn't. We're still pixel hunting, and the puzzles here were so contrived that they broke my suspension of disbelief (like, blow a skylight open with a water rocket made out of a coke bottle and escape with a grappling hook made from a dust cover and a crowbar instead of simply pushing a piece of furniture under that skylight). Also characters walk around at a rather slow pace, which makes the game longer than it has a right to be. And the supposedly romantic banter between George and Nico feels way too forced for me. Did Revolution Software fire all of their competent developers after the second game and are now slowly rebuilding?
