Description
20 years after the award-winning action adventure hit, Outcast, pioneered the genre of non-linear open-world games, the long-awaited sequel sees Cutter Slade return to the spectacular alien world of Adelpha. Resurrected by the almighty Yods, he has returned to find the Talans enslaved, the world stripped of its natural resources, and his own past intertwining with the invading robot forces. It's up to him to go on a mission and save the planet again.

The original team behind Outcast 1 has reunited to create this fascinating world, full of dangerous creatures and home to the Talan people – an ancient culture whose fate has become inextricably linked with earth since the events of the first game. You play as Cutter Slade, ex-Navy SEAL, sporting the same dry wit he had back in the 90s – however, the world around him has changed and eventually, so will he.

To save Adelpha, you will …
  • use your jetpack to jump, air-dash, glide, and quickly traverse the fantastic in-game open world
  • combine dozens of different modules to create your own personal weapon for taking down the robot invaders
  • have total control to approach the story at your own pace in this non-linear world
  • explore the world without boundaries, discover hidden temples and dangerous wildlife
  • get familiar with the Talan culture while helping them free their villages and gain access to ancient Talan powers that use forces of nature to destroy your enemies
  • experience a beautiful, hand-crafted world accompanied by an epic soundtrack by Outcast's original composer, Lennie Moore

It's a fantastic adventure!

After aboiut 15 hours in I am having the time of my life. It is a memorable adventure. And it feels like an adventure. Outcast has a wide variety of movement modes. All, exept the winglider, feel responsive and accurate enough. Traversal is enjoyable and fast. The glider mode is keyboard based. It is functional enough for movement in the open world, but it is not great for the parkour puzzles. I don't have all the upgrades yet, so that may improve. There is a fair bit of collecting, but all the collections so far have been wrapped into an interesting mini activity. They are quick enough to do and don't feel like a grind or a chore. So far the graphics are good, performance is alright, and the environment composition is outstanding. It looks right and in general, it looks gorgeous. I've had one or two slowdowns during cutscenes but gameplay has flowed well in my mid-of-the-line computer. The story is keeping me interested, and entertained so far. I like the protagonist. He's no wide-eyed immature kid, but a "been there done that" grumpy old man that hides his impatience behind some campy humor. Many of the characters are fun and memorable too. With what I've seen so far it seems well worth the money.

A lot better than media will tell you...

This is another of those games, that got a rather mediocre reception and I just cannot comprehend, why that is so. I followed the original game at release twenty-some-years ago, but I didn't play it at the time, since my hardware was not capable of rendering the voxel graphics with a reasonable performance. So I am actually new to Outcast. And for that, I still had a blast during the first 10hours of this game. The movement and the feeling of freedom are just amazing, of course a bit yanky in certain moments, but nothing grave, that could slightly ruin the great experience. Jetpack and Wingsuit are very well done, you can use it very early in the game in a very satisfying manner. The world design and graphics are beautiful in my opinion, the vertical levels just match perfectly the jetpack movability. Of course there are some standard fetch quests, but the let me use the jetpack, and therefore I never got tired of them until now. I guess the story is pretty standard, but it's okay for me, there are some memorable characters. I bought 1 day before release and took advantage of the 15% discount. The 60 € price tag might be a litte over the top. Not that the game might not be worth it, but I would definetely have hesitated in that case. Enjoy

A different kind of open world

A different kind of open world: Slow to start, but it gets more and more intense. Good connections and flashbacks to Outcast 1.1/Second Contact Natives, towns and nature are/will be connected with your (Cutter Slade's) help. Use of native language and gestures. Language jokes like: Cutter: "Some people would kill for a beach like this." Native: "You know monsters like that?" "Organic" missions: Some Native creations or growing of animals and plants takes time and will be "done" while you are on other missions. Also good playable if you don't know Outcast 1.1 Makes 9/10 for me.

A good experience

The beginning is quite harsh and old school but if you keep going past the 1 hour tutorial the world of Adelpha finally opens to you. The freedom is really exhilarating , you can travel however you want, the jetpack/glider is really fun to use after a few upgrades. The world is kind of small compare to other games but it's really full of life and have a lot a different biomes. You can expore on your own terms without the map and have a lot of fun . The Combat is not so great at start but once you unlocked some upgraded it elevated the gameplay a lot ! It's not groundbreaking but it's a decent follow up to a game that was a pionneer in 1999. It's not for everyone and it's a game that builds on the world and it's inhabitants . Your experience can really depend if you engage with the world and the characters. To me it's a win despite some issues , it's at least decent, and pretty good if you are already in love with the outcast universe. minus : The French dubbing has a few misteps and some bad transcripts... which is a shame considering the game is from a belgium studio.

Back to Adelpha!

The game does right by the original, and for that alone it deserves the highest praise already. Yods be silent! <3
