Description

The Gap tells a story of one man’s struggle to find a cure for his family’s illness through the exploration of parallel realities which include memories dear to his heart, forcing him to dive deeper into his psyche. 

 

 

Joshua Hayes is a neuroscientist, whose family is affected by a rare neurological disorder that slowly eats away at one’s capability and mental well-being. The struggle and fight of the family is witnessed through the lens of his highest and lowest moments. While exploring the raw, minimalist spaces, he comes across items that act as gateways to his past. 

 

 

Moreover, while taking part in an experimental neuroscientific program, led by a biotech giant - Neuraxis, Joshua unknowingly finds himself entangled in a corporate intrigue. 

 

 

In hopes of unraveling the web of memories, he’ll need to face a distressing question - can he really trust himself?

For my slights with the overall narrative, however, The Gap offers real problems, giving a more sci-fi glimpse to the world of genetic and neurological disorders and how it impacts dreams, ambitions, and our families. For those that love to delve into the mind and its inner workings (with a bit of stretching done to the science behind it), look no further than here.

The Gap is in an intriguing and compelling idea. Unfortunately, it’s underdeveloped, and structured in a way that undermines something critical for any psychological thriller: if you’re not connected to an invested in the characters, then you’re not going to care about what they’re going through enough for it to chill you. The Gap also comes across as something that is badly trying to be analysed in intellectual terms, but fails to land on a distinctive theme that it can call its own. It’s great to see projects like this, from a games-as-art perspective, but it’s not one of the finest examples of that, either.

The Gap may suffer from some overly basic puzzle design and visual ticks, but this is ultimately an enjoyably mysterious narrative that's still worth the few hours it takes to see through. Its launch price feels a bit high for what’s on offer here, but we’d suggest scooping this one up the first time it goes on sale.

Intersting gameplay

Interesting gameplay, but pretty short (I finished it in less than 4 hours, and I'm not a speed-runner). Also, the game gets rather exposition-heavy in the final stretch.

A solid sci-fi narrative

Overall: A solid sci-fi narrative. The Gap delivers what it promises: a psychological exploration of a heavy theme in a sci-fi setting. While it doesn't quite stick the emotional landing, it's a journey worth taking for fans of the sci-fi genre. Highlights: - Atmospheric Sci-Fi: The futuristic setting and "technobabble" are well-executed and will definitely satisfy a sci-fi itch. - Storytelling: It explores a heavy theme of an incurable, fatal neurological illness in a slightly removed sci-fi setting and in, I felt, a respectable way. - Visual Polish: The graphics and effects are high-quality, though, some trade-offs were made such as using silhouettes of characters. - Short Gameplay: It's a short experience, but it didn't feel "too" short. Frictions: - Predictable character dynamics: The characters interacted with each other in a predictable way. - No lingering impact: Despite the heavy subject matter, the ending didn't leave a lasting emotional impression or offer much to chew on. Recommended for: Fans of walking sims and sci-fi.
