Old Skies

Somewhat recommended

Not a bad game, but definitely nowhere near "Unavowed" or "Technobabylon". Not even close. Gameplay and difficulty are fine for the most part, even though the rewinds can get annoying real fast. What I disliked most about them is that more than once it takes several iterations until the game finally gives you the options you need to resolve the current situation, even though sometimes it's blatantly obvious from the start what you should be doing. The individual chapters were okay narratively, but felt a bit disjointed (as in lack of overarching plot) until the last chapter basically ties them all together. In a far too "on rails" fashion, for my taste. There are also strong LGBTQ themes here, but they're competently included in the worldbuilding, without the incessant preaching that makes them so obnoxious in other games. Bottom line: if you like other WadjetEye games this might still be worth checking out, but wait for a discount.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

What an awesome game. The world is beautiful, even though you're reminded of the harsh realities of war on several occasions. The characters are interesting, and the quests are fun (with very few exceptions). A select few quests even have a time limit, which is something I'd like to see in more games. Sure, the game does have its flaws. For instance I still don't like the combat, even though it has been improved from the first game. Duels are usually fine now, even with mouse and keyboard, but fights against multiple enemies still feel way too clunky (particularly switching melee targets or disengaging from an enemy). The dialogue also could have been a lot better. And traders apparently migrated to Bohemia from Tamriel, because all of them are as dirt poor as traders in Bethesda games. However, at the end of the day none of these shortcomings really detract from the experience. Definitely give it a try if you haven't already.

The Excavation of Hob's Barrow

The characters feel a little weak, but gameplay and story are decent. Personally, I don't like the ending, but it does fit the theme. Different endings would have been nice, though. With just the one ending the decisions you make throughout the game don't feel very impactful.

Disco Elysium - The Final Cut

Somewhat recommended

Interesting game. Good worldbuilding, compelling characters and unique art style. Unfortunately I don't happen to like the world or the characters very much (also not a fan of drug trips), so the game ultimately fell in the "not for me" category. That the game had several passages where you had to click through lengthy text sequences (something I hate in visual novels too) didn't help either. I would still have given it 4 stars for its overall quality if it weren't for that godawful horse antenna scene. Whoever put that in the game deserves to be fired and never get a job in the game industry ever again.

Cleo - a pirate's tale

A love letter to ye LucasArts adventures of olde, even though the game mechanics do not follow the traditional point & click formula (movement is WASD). The characters are funny, and the puzzles are logical for the most part.

The First Templar - Special Edition

Partially recommended

Plot, characters and voice acting are passable, but storytelling and dialogue are below average. The levels are pretty linear, with the occasional more open area or branching path, so a map is not really needed, but I would've preferred having one regardless. Combat is not very challenging. You can get by with basic attacks/blocks/dodges, at least on normal difficulty (which is what I played). I liked the "Witcher senses"-like mechanic for detecting traps and tracking. The random finishers you can get at the end of a fight were fun too. I've seen some people say that this game is so bad that it's good, but I wouldn't agree to that. It's just a mediocre hack 'n slash game with some fun moments here and there. It might be worth checking out at a discount.

Nice little casual detective game with unique art style. Gameplay is mostly talking to everyone about everything mixed with some light puzzles.

Between Horizons – A Sci-Fi Detective Adventure

A decent story that raises some interesting questions. I think it's a little weaker than LACUNA, though, as there were some logical flaws here. For example, there's one case where you have to deal with encoded prescriptions, where for some reason the medical staff can't tell you what the codes for the drugs are. As someone with some experience in this area I can assure you that medical staff would refer to the drugs by code almost exclusively. Also, I still hate that you can't manually save, or load an older savegame (didn't like that in LACUNA either). I understand what the developer is trying to accomplish with it, but I disagree that it's desirable from a player perspective (except as an optional mode maybe). However, despite these complaints I enjoyed the game overall.

Revenge of the Savage Planet

Pretty good sequel. They switched perspective from 1st to 3rd person (most likely to showcase the collectible outfits), and also changed the mechanics a bit, but the core gameplay, the exploration, and the humor are still the same. If you liked the first game you should definitely give this one a try. Conversely, if you didn't like the first one, this probably won't win you over.
