Combat done right

Played this +15 years back, I still have the CD here...somewhere... Anyway, about this game I give it 4 stars because: + vibrant world + various locations + an actually engaging combat system where you can deliver COMBOS and "fatalities" !!!!! + various enemies + other gameplay factors well executed (not perfect, but good enough): Interface, difficulty,... The only down point for me was the voice acting, it's so cheesy you could almost put it on your sandwich. The most satisfying point for me was the combat, finally a game that engages you in the melee of combat in stead of brainless zombie like button mashing. And since then I haven't seen a game doing this style of combat (or I missed it...). Anyway, if you are looking for something different combat wise and don't mind the age and it's voice-acting... go for it!

non-diablo Hack n Slash

I really liked revenant back in the days. On one hand there was this very special character, a reanimated dead king with a lot of badass attitude during dialogs, one the other hand, there was this unique gameplay, where you could usere different attacks and release powerful combos based different combination of the basic attacks. The game had hard moments but with growing amount of combos it got easier, especially one move (i dont really remembar) was great to beat that read ninja-like foes, which were very annoying before learning this move. I remember my cousin talking about how difficult that game was and once when he came over I played revenant and performed a combo and he asked, what I just did. It turned out, that he somehow missed the mentor who reveals the secret of combos in the very beginning (first town, why waste time reading screen texts... :P ). Buying a Diablo X Doubledragon Combo based Hackn Slay -> few bucks and worth each of them beating half the game with only basic attacks without combos as personal pain in the a** style -> priceless

Major Elric of Melnibone vibes.

Not a diablo clone, more like if a fighting game merged with an isometric rpg. Its a GEM, but you MUST install some additoinal software to make it actually run and look well enogh. The only gripe I had for this game is the map is horrible and being stuck on a low resolution is no fun. If you can get past all that you are in for a treat. This really should get a remaster, but I dont think that will ever happen.

Combat and not much else...

I went into this game expecting a 3D Diablo clone. What I got instead was, well, something closer to a beat 'em up, but with swords. Revenant has probably the best combat system out of all the diablo-clones. There are 3 attack moves (fast, mid and heavy as I know) to begin with, which removes the "spam M1 button to win" problem. To add to that, you cannot repeatedly click the same same attack move because your stamina will quickly depleat, your swings will slow down and you'll do 1 damage even with heavy attacks. You will never fight more than 5 enemies at once, there aren't hordes for you to get swarmed. Instead, encounters are smaller but tougher as you progress through the game. Combat is fun, that's about it. There isn't much to review here. The loot system will only give you low-tier consumables, you have to grind gold and travel back to town to purchase armor/weapons. Speaking of armor and weapons, there's not much to choose from. It's only a ladder of high numbers where every few levels unlocks another set of armor and a few weapons which only the one with the highest damage should interest you. There are no special stat bonuses (except on rare occasions), just get the same armor in different colors. Quests are barren and cryptic to find. The map is very small, there are no side dungeons to exp[lore and the alter levels get very maze-ish. If what you want is to go around killing everything that moves and stuffing your face with ham that's been on the ground, this is the game for you. Oh and magic sucks.
