Nice experience

I liked this game. Most dialogs are text only, and there could be more voice-overs (maybe, even text-to-speach as I do usually listen to books instead of reading them with my eyes), but overall I have enjoyed the experience anyway The plot idea is interesting, I did have the feeling that my actions have consequences in the world. The companions have been engaging enough, but there weren't any that I REALLY liked. I also feel that the story line could be made stronger. For example, when you declare independance, former freedom fighters could start joining you. Also, the "independance" ending where you convince the justice archon to bow to you, while somewhat satisfying, also feels a bit far-fetched. In the advertizing, the authors have described the world as "extremely corrupt". This is not the case. I come from a really corrupt country, and I think that the authors didn't really understand what "corrupt" means. Not that it would detract from the enjoyability of the game. In game you can basically do whatever you want, and the game will go with it, and this is something that I really enjoyed. I don't really like in-game puzzles, but most of ones presented in this game weren't too annoying. However, I got stuck at some and googling for the answers took more time than it should have. Overall, if you liked classic plot RPG's of the 2000s, you'll probably enjoy this game as well

Great old-school RPG wtih good graphics

Great RPG. The only downside was that I was not aware that certain locations will be closed after certain actions. Therefore i finished the game without scouting the most western spire. But it was a great experience as well. Somehow I also feel the story was not resolved completely, maybe the developers have some sort of datadisk at hand. Maybe not.

Promising but railroaded and too buggy

This game has a famously unusual setting (playing one of the enforcers of the (evil?) overlord) but fails to live up to that level. - The game suffers from bad load times, to the point of unplayability (currently in the middle of act II, load times have increased exponentially and now the game simply crashes instead of loading my save file). - Everything in the game feels extremely railroaded (to the point where you eventually stop reading the text and just head to the next battle because this is the only new open map zone). - Spoilers are mildly necessary to have an interesting experience (e.g. where to get sigils, what to do with spires, etc.)

An RPG that actually lets you roleplay.

A lot of people will complain about how short the game is, but you will not be able to see more than half of the game's content in one play through. The amount of reactivity in this game is simply astounding. Every choice has real consequences which can lead to entire areas opening up or becoming inaccessible. Just finished my 2nd run where i sided with the "good" faction, which consists primarily of npc's i mercilessly slaughtered on my 1st go as a loyal subject to the overlord. It was almost an entirely new game. There were a lot of new areas, and the re-used ones often had lots of entirely different quests to solve. The only other game i have played with this level of reactivity was Age OF Decadence, and that took about a decade to create. This is some really impressive work by obsidian. On the technical side, this game runs on the same engine as Pillars OF Eternity and uses a lot of the same mechanics. However, Tyranny manages to improve on almost all of it. Personally i hated the combat in POE, it was way too fast paced and the engagement mechanic was just plain awful. Both of these issues have been solved in Tyranny, and there are several other improvements as well. Spell crafting is downright brilliant, and the text/conversation system is miles ahead of the generic one used in POE. My only real gripe with the game was its final chapter, which was clearly rushed. Eagerly anticipating a sequel as this story is far from finished.

Overrated and linear

I really wanted to like this game - it showed a lot of promise, what with being able to play an intelligent villain rather than just the murderous moron like other games and making choices that actually have an effect on the story. Well, to be blunt, this is probably the last time I pre-order. What killed it for me, (SPOILER ALERT) was the forced choice between factions. I knew, of course, that there would be a choice. But I wasn't expecting it to be binary. Early on (around 3 hours for me, iirc) the game literally forces you to choose which faction of Kyros' empire to side with - the roman legion-esque Disfavored or the chaotic, sneaky Scarlet Chorus. I had assumed that there would be a third option, manage to get the two sides to stop bickering and unite. Oh, how wrong I was. One of the characters literally screamed at me MAKE A CHOICE! ONE OR THE OTHER! NO COMPROMISE! RARRRRGHHHH! A linear RPG, to me, is an abomination. It's like non-alcoholic beer - what's the point? An RPG should be saying to the player, "YES!" and not "NO! NO! FOLLOW THE PLOT! STAY ON THE RAILS!" If this game is any indication, I'm really glad I never got around to playing Pillars of Eternity. Goodbye, Obsidian. You're not getting any more of my money.
