Créé par une équipe incluant d'anciens concepteurs de HITMAN et le cocréateur de PAYDAY, voici Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, un jeu d'aventure tactique qui combine les combats au tour par tour de XCOM avec un système de jeu mêlant exploration et furtivité dans un monde repris par la nature... et les mutants.
Le monde a pris fin, bien sûr.
Ce n'était qu'une question de temps, entre les changements climatiques extrêmes, une crise économique mondiale, une pandémie meurtrière et des tensions toujours plus vives entre anciennes et nouvelles superpuissances. Et puis, pour la première fois depuis 1945, des armes nucléaires ont été utilisées au cours d'un conflit. Et avant que la poussière ne retombe, de nombreux champignons s'étaient élevés dans le ciel, d'est en ouest.
Maintenant, tout est terminé et le calme est revenu. La nature a envahi les villes en ruine. Le vent balaie les rues désertes transformées en cimetières.
Les humains ne sont plus, et les êtres qui fouillent les vestiges de la civilisation sont des mutants, humanoïdes et animaux difformes qui cherchent désespérément leur salut, ou juste quelque chose à manger. Pour survivre, vos compagnons et vous allez devoir sortir pour explorer la Zone.
Un jour, peut-être découvrirez-vous l'Eden des légendes, le havre de paix des anciens au beau milieu de l'enfer. S'il faut en croire les mythes, c'est là que la vérité attend les plus courageux. Peut-être y trouverez-vous les réponses à vos questions.
À moins que tout ça, ce ne soit que des histoires pour les gogos.
DES COMBATS TACTIQUES
Si vous êtes accro aux combats tactiques, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden est fait pour vous. Découvrez toutes les subtilités d'un système de combat au tour par tour d'une grande richesse, inspiré de celui des jeux de la série XCOM.
EXPLOREZ UNE TERRE POST-HUMAINE
Découvrez un monde post-apocalyptique aux villes abandonnées, aux routes détruites et à la nature foisonnante. Sans oublier l'Arche, une oasis mal famée éclairée au néon où vous pourrez reconstituer votre stock de provisions et préparer votre prochaine aventure.
CONTRÔLEZ UN GROUPE DE MUTANTS
Un canard particulièrement agressif, un sanglier prompt à la colère... Attendez-vous à jouer des héros sortant des sentiers battus. Faites la connaissance de Dux, Bormin, Selma, et bien d'autres personnages ayant tous leur personnalité propre, ainsi qu'un point de vue le plus souvent dérangé sur le monde et leur situation personnelle.
MAÎTRISEZ LA FURTIVITÉ
Faufilez-vous dans l'ombre pour éviter les conflits ou prendre vos adversaires par surprise. Le système de furtivité en temps réel du jeu vous permet de contrôler totalement vos mouvements, afin, par exemple, de vous introduire à l'intérieur d'un camp ennemi, de positionner votre équipe au mieux et de bénéficier de l'élément de surprise.
DÉBLOQUEZ DE NOUVELLES MUTATIONS
Débloquez de nouvelles mutations et de nouveaux pouvoirs pour vos mutants, comme la Peau de pierre de Selma, la Charge de Bormin, ou encore l'incroyable faculté qu'a Dux de se faufiler dans un camp plein d'ennemis sans se faire remarquer, et ce bien qu'il soit un canard d'un mètre vingt de haut qui a la langue bien pendue et ne va nulle part sans son arbalète.
DES ENVIRONNEMENTS DYNAMIQUES
Utilisez l'environnement à votre avantage. Restez en dehors des zones éclairées par les projecteurs, évitez d'entrer dans le champ de vision des gardes, ou détruisez murs et bâtiments pour semer le chaos.
DU BUTIN ABSOLUMENT PARTOUT
Équipez vos mutants de frondes de fortune ou de fusils de gros calibre, de chapeaux haut-de-forme ou de gilets de police. Protégez-les contre un monde hostile en les dotant d'objets plus improbables les uns que les autres. Quand vous verrez un sanglier mutant revêtu d'une armure à pointes vous charger avec un tromblon entre les pattes, vous saurez que c'est vraiment la fin du monde !
The only thing i want to say is that the story is great, loved every bit and quirk of it, the combat while not as complex as X-Com for example is quite challenging and at some point you really ditch the pretense of stealth only to bring the big guns out.
It could have a bit more variety when you buy guns or upgrade guns sure, but the fact that the guns change with the modifications made both in funtion and in visual more than makes up for it.
The exploration is also very well made, without much pretense the controls are simple and the hilarious moments follow from one discovery to another. ( which Dev killed his girlfriends turtle by accident is still a mistery tho ) .
The NPCs are challenging and well if not bright, some, then deadly accurate when it comes to their roles.
This game is a must have for anyone that likes post-apocaliptic stories with a bit of grim humour and a good combat system.
The game has a very compelling setting, which along with the quirky protagonists and the fitting sound track sucks you right into the world. The voice-overs are of very high quality and help bring the characters to live.
The combat is challenging and never boring, but seems to favor certain strategies over others. Basically, there are one or two "right" ways to play it, and any different approach will have slim chances for success. Then again, maybe I'm just not smart enough to figure out different angles to tackle this with.
While I personally don't care much for stealth games, this part of the game is relatively forgiving and seems to be mainly used to set yourself up for an advantage during the fights. You could theoretically avoid many fights by sneaking past them, but there is little sense in doing so as it will mean to be underlevelled for the fights that you can't avoid.
The story is interesting, albeit a bit predictable. The game is rather linear with only a few optional quests outside the main story. It is also rather short and seems to be only the first chapter in what might perhaps become a trilogy of games.
While the basic mechanics and presentation are decent, there is not that much variety in content: enemies basically stay the same from start to finish, with only a few additional units being added as the story progresses. While every character has its own skill tree, many of the skills are reused on several characters and also the enemies. This seems to be largely due to budget limitations, thus only scratching at the potential that could have been realized with a triple A budget. However, the content that is there is top notch.
Despite the shortcomings in depth and variety, this is a really fun and charming game and well worth a look.
a) It doesn't overwhelm the new player. With work, you can advance steadily through the story.
b) There are many ways to win each stage, and even more to lose. I cheat and watch the youtube guides. They succeeded in different ways, and I succeeded after much effort in a different way.
c) Good spectacle - nice setting, background music is dramatic but not distracting.
d) Engaging characters and humor.
e) Engaging story. A lot of time to speculate who you can trust and where the plot is going.
Overall, liked it better than XCom, better flow, better story, better to look at. More engaging than Xenonauts, and I love Xenonauts.
This is a game that borrows heavily from the modern XCOM titles but has enough of its own ideas going to keep it from being a souless clone.
For example, a heavier emphasis on stealth was a pleasent surprise as its not something I've seen done well in this genre before. While nailing down the specifics of it can stifle you at first, once you get your head around it, you'll find it adds a deeper and unique layer of tactics to the game.
The game is fairly short and quite limited in its scope but its as long as it needs to be for the ideas it has. If they had gone for a 40 hour mark it would doubtless get stale. Although, if you are itching for a bit more post game the fun stalker trials have you covered.
In my experience I found the diffculty curve to be inconsitent as it waved up and down between hours of ease to suddenly be blindsided by a challenging fight out of nowhere.
My biggest gripe was the writing, which I found to be painfully avarage, not awful, but avarage and tedious. The colorful cast of characters was one of the elements that drew me into the game but the story and setting is a predictable and heartless tango that we've danced a thousand times before. Topped with a twist so obvious even the most unattentive player could likley guess the end. Fortunatley the acting cast (English cast, though I've not checked whether there was a Swedish one?) does an admirable job bringing life to what they were given and at the very least I can say I grew fond of the characters.
Overall a great game I binged through in a few lengthy sessions and I look forward to see what the devs come out with next.
For the most part, Mutant Year Zero contains alot of fresh content that makes it stand apart from it contemporaries, while also having enough that's familiar for anyone into the genre. Like the store page said, this is an XCOM clone essentialy, but with most of the sweat inducing moments taken out. Whereas in XCOM, you would have to worry about losing soldiers to extremely dangerous enemies and having subpar weaponry throughout parts of your playthrough, that's true here too, but in a different way.
The enemies are varied enough that they'll give you a challenge when they work in tandem, but make sure to avoid fighting them all at once. The team of mutants you'll assemble have access to a number of unique abilities, weapons, items and armor that they will having a decent fighting chance provided you take advantage of the game's mechanics.
Just remember, you're a stalker, do not play fair because the enemies in-game can either set you on fire, mind control you, electrify you, shoot you, pound you into raw meat, bulldoze over you, and a few other things that will make you scream in frustration. So don't let them, work with the stealth mechanics, explore the maps for good vantage points and powerful loot and win the day. The game is difficult and the rewards are rarely worthless, so play smart and play it safe.
As a last note, I beat the game on Normal, but the game was still a solid experience and had quite a few interesting ideas and points of dialogue that genuinely amused me. The game is fun, but I reccomend picking it up on sale because while there are a lot of good points about it, there are still enough frustrations that some people might find it a turnoff when it comes to certain points.
