Much better than Amnesia 1
I was very disappointed by Amnesia 1 at the time. It failed to scare me, and besides the alleged scariness the game had absolutely nothing else that made it worth playing. So I am very happy that Amnesia 2 is very different. The Good: - Meaningful, moving story. - Sometimes truly scary (as opposed to part 1, which never really scared me). - Much more interesting world: the fascinating underground machine works a lot better than the super-generic castle in part 1. - EXCELLENT soundtrack. - Annoying and pointless sanity meter from part 1 removed. - Great and satisfying revelation at the end. - Exactly the right length. The bad: - Technically not very good engine. - The scene in the streets of London is kind of superfluous and does not really fit the rest of the game. - The writing would have profited from a little more polishing. - The gameplay is as dumb as in part 1 ("find the place where the game wants you to click next, and then click"). The bottom line: Does the game have something so unique that you should play it? For A1 the answer was a clear no. For A2 it is a clear yes. Is anything about the game so bad that it would make it difficult to enjoy that unique thing from the previous question? For A1 the answer is a clear yes (bad level design; story that's so nonsensical that it feels like it comes from a random generator). For A2 the answer is a clear no. Ergo: Play A2 and avoid A1.
