26 March 2013 - Updated to work for Good Old Games version 2.0.0 of Tomb Raider 1+2+3
Many thanks to Stella from tombraiders.net for pointing out to me that my instructions were out of date.
Here's how to put a new icon on your Windows 7 desktop to run the Tomb Raider Gold expansion that Eidos made free to download. It contains these four additional levels
Shadow of the Cat: Return to Egypt, Temple of the Cat
Unfinished Business: Atlantean Stronghold, The Hive
Atlantean Stronghold continues from the point the original Tomb Raider ended
• Download the 3Dfx version of Unfinished Business from Stella's Tomb Raider Site. The file is called trub3dfx.exe
• Unpack it using 7-zip or similar. It's an exe file and is supposed to unpack itself but it's 16-bit so won't run on later Windows versions
• You should now have a folder containing two folders, DATA and INFO, and two files, TGreadme.txt and tombub.exe. Highlight these four items (using control-A or with control-mouse clicks) and copy them with control-C
• Locate where your GOG Tomb Raider 1 is installed. The easiest way is to right-click on the Tomb Raider 1 icon and select Open file location. This opens an explorer window at Tomb Raider 1 2 3\DOSBOX
• Go up to the parent directory Tomb Raider 1 2 3 and double-click on the TOMBRAID folder to go into it. Press control-V to paste the files and folders you copied from the Unfinished Business distribution. When the copy is complete (it should take only a moment) you will see the new DATA and INFO folders alongside tombub.exe and the original tomb.exe
• Go back up to the Tomb Raider 1 folder and make a duplicate of the file dosboxTR_single.conf you find there. The easiest way is to highlight the file with the mouse and then press control-C, control-V. You will see a new file called dosboxTR_single - Copy.conf. Press F2 to rename it to dosboxTR_UB.conf and press enter to save the new name
• Edit your new dosboxTR_UB.conf using Notepad or similar. At the end of the file is a line that says tomb.exe. Change it to tombub.exe. Save the file and close Notepad
• Make a duplicate of the Tomb Raider 1 shortcut on your desktop like this. Right click on the icon and drag to an empty space on the desktop. Release the mouse button and select Create shortcuts here from the options that appear. You now have a second identical shortcut to Tomb Raider 1
• Highlight the new icon and press F2 to rename it. Type Tomb Raider Unfinished Business and press enter
• Right-click on your new shortcut and choose Properties (at the bottom of the context menu). In the new window that pops up you will see a Target: field which currently contains a very long command. You are interested only in the last few characters of this command, which look like
... \Tomb Raider 1\dosboxTR_single.conf" -noconsole -c exit
Now change single to UB but leave the rest untouched so that it ends with
... \Tomb Raider 1\dosboxTR_UB.conf" -noconsole -c exit
Click the OK button when you're done.
• Your new shortcut will now run Tomb Raider Unfinished Business for you. If you are having problems then open the shortcut properties again and carefully check the Target: field that you changed. Then look in the Tomb Raider 1 folder again and make sure you have named the dosboxTR_UB.conf file correctly
I hope you have fun playing these four extra "expert" Tomb Raider levels. (Mind the crocodile!)
