26 March 2013 - Updated to work for Good Old Games version 2.0.0 of Tomb Raider 1+2+3

Many thanks to Stella from tombraiders.net for pointing out to me that my instructions were out of date.

Here's how to put a new icon on your Windows 7 desktop to run the Tomb Raider Gold expansion that Eidos made free to download. It contains these four additional levels

Shadow of the Cat: Return to Egypt, Temple of the Cat
Unfinished Business: Atlantean Stronghold, The Hive

Atlantean Stronghold continues from the point the original Tomb Raider ended

• Download the 3Dfx version of Unfinished Business from Stella's Tomb Raider Site. The file is called trub3dfx.exe

• Unpack it using 7-zip or similar. It's an exe file and is supposed to unpack itself but it's 16-bit so won't run on later Windows versions

• You should now have a folder containing two folders, DATA and INFO, and two files, TGreadme.txt and tombub.exe. Highlight these four items (using control-A or with control-mouse clicks) and copy them with control-C

• Locate where your GOG Tomb Raider 1 is installed. The easiest way is to right-click on the Tomb Raider 1 icon and select Open file location. This opens an explorer window at Tomb Raider 1 2 3\DOSBOX

• Go up to the parent directory Tomb Raider 1 2 3 and double-click on the TOMBRAID folder to go into it. Press control-V to paste the files and folders you copied from the Unfinished Business distribution. When the copy is complete (it should take only a moment) you will see the new DATA and INFO folders alongside tombub.exe and the original tomb.exe

• Go back up to the Tomb Raider 1 folder and make a duplicate of the file dosboxTR_single.conf you find there. The easiest way is to highlight the file with the mouse and then press control-C, control-V. You will see a new file called dosboxTR_single - Copy.conf. Press F2 to rename it to dosboxTR_UB.conf and press enter to save the new name

• Edit your new dosboxTR_UB.conf using Notepad or similar. At the end of the file is a line that says tomb.exe. Change it to tombub.exe. Save the file and close Notepad

• Make a duplicate of the Tomb Raider 1 shortcut on your desktop like this. Right click on the icon and drag to an empty space on the desktop. Release the mouse button and select Create shortcuts here from the options that appear. You now have a second identical shortcut to Tomb Raider 1

• Highlight the new icon and press F2 to rename it. Type Tomb Raider Unfinished Business and press enter

Right-click on your new shortcut and choose Properties (at the bottom of the context menu). In the new window that pops up you will see a Target: field which currently contains a very long command. You are interested only in the last few characters of this command, which look like

... \Tomb Raider 1\dosboxTR_single.conf" -noconsole -c exit

Now change single to UB but leave the rest untouched so that it ends with

... \Tomb Raider 1\dosboxTR_UB.conf" -noconsole -c exit

Click the OK button when you're done.

• Your new shortcut will now run Tomb Raider Unfinished Business for you. If you are having problems then open the shortcut properties again and carefully check the Target: field that you changed. Then look in the Tomb Raider 1 folder again and make sure you have named the dosboxTR_UB.conf file correctly

I hope you have fun playing these four extra "expert" Tomb Raider levels. (Mind the crocodile!)

"C:\Program Files (x86)\\Tomb Raider 1 2 3\DOSBOX\" -conf

(Notice that there must be a space between the double-quote and '-conf')

- Now edit the next field, labelled 'Start in:'. It will read something like

"C:\Program Files (x86)\\Tomb Raider 1 2 3\DOSBOX"

Remove 'DOSBOX' and replace it with 'Tomb Raider 1' so that the field looks like

"C:\Program Files (x86)\\Tomb Raider 1 2 3\Tomb Raider 1"

Click the 'OK' button to save these values and close the window.

- Highlight the new icon and press F2 to rename it. Type 'Tomb Raider Unfinished Business' and press enter

- Your new shortcut should now run Tomb Raider Unfinished Business for you. If you are having problems then open the shortcut properties again and check the two fields you changed carefully. Then look in the 'Tomb Raider 1' folder again and make sure you have named the '' file correctly

Have fun playing these four extra 'expert' Tomb Raider levels!
Thank you for this post. I've been hoping to revisit Unfinished Business for years.

I followed all the steps you gave but my copy of the file '' does not have any line that says '' so there is nothing I can change to ''.

Ignoring that I followed the rest of the steps in your guide and wound up with this when I click on my new shortcut (please see screenshot)

I hope you can help me to fix this!

Thank you!!!

I'm sorry Hilda and kmetek. I hadn't noticed that people were having trouble with this. The problem is that GOG changed the format of the release in version 2.0.0 so that the instructions I gave no longer apply. I have updated my post so that they work for the current version.

IT WORKS!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !!

Return to Egypt was one of my absolute favourite levels and I can't tell you how happy I am to have it back!

Now, I'm off to wallow in some nostalgia....
So sorry it's taken me ages to reply to your updated post. I got a little sidetracked by the new Tomb Raider game. It's a blast but still can't hold a candle to the original.

In any case, I tested your updated GOG/TRUB instructions, and they work perfectly. Thanks again for putting the effort into this. I will definitely share with my readers.

Take care and raid on!
Do you have the guide for the old version? I need some help on adding the Shadow of the Cat and Unfinished Business for the old version of Tomb Raider 1+2+3. Is it similar to the new version? I'm currently stuck at how to setup the shortcuts :/
Hi

This is something that I did to get Both Tomb Raider and TRUB to run from one "bat" file. I've got the Steam version, but would work with the GOG version (since the Steam one is (99%sure ) the GOG Version.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/js5k9w <== link to the autoexec.bat part of the dosboxTR.conf

Pic of Loader Screen: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=160761079

Used a bit of GOG's great loading scripts, to get it working like that

I have just integrated UB with my TR1 which I bought from GOG.com.. and it works perfectly. However, I had already progressed to ST Francis Folly beforehand... the savegame files are still in the folder yet it won't let me load them when I load the game. Although I am not far into the game really I would prefer to not have to do it all again as I have already done those levels more than once due to going back for secrets! (I'm a secret hoarder).

EDIT// Also, I thought you could play through the game and do the UB levels after the last level? Instead it takes me straight to the bonus levels? If so that sucks..

Hi,

I am running TR1 in Windows XP. I have also downloaded the Unfinished Business and followed your instructions on how to run it. But, my existing "Tomb Raider 1" shortcut has the following in it's "target" box:
"C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Tomb Raider 1 2 3\Tomb Raider 1\gogwrap.exe" GOGTR1

How to modify this and run the UB?

I will appreciate any help on this.

Thanks in advance.

You don't actually have to copy the dosboxTR.conf file or mess with the shortcut to play Unfinished Business. Just open the dosboxTR.conf file and change "tomb.exe." to "tombub.exe". The normal shortcut will now load Unfinished Business instead of the original game. If you want to play the original game again, just change it back to "tomb.exe".

I don't know if this will affect save data or anything but it does save a lot of hassle.

Followed your instruction and it's working like a charm! Thank you so much!

The way I followed the instructions I ended up with the original TR1 shortcut in the gog folder and a TR1 UB shortcut on my desktop.. both working perfectly. Savegames not affected; savegames for each are independent and only work for their own shortcuts.
Has anyone tried this recently? I started going through all of the steps only to discover that some of the files we're supposed to be adding, like tombub.exe, are already in the folder, and some files, like dosboxTR_single.conf, are nowhere to be found. I'd love to get this to work.
