Why would anyone want the steam version?

Generalelectric: Why would anyone want the steam version?
Because with a steam sale it was $3.99!

Unfortunately, I don't see a CD key anywhere in my Steam account or registry and the backup website listed in the first post is since dead.

The same.
I will try this: http://www.thewitcher.com/backup/
It seems that if I can proof my purchasing, and it's ok.

They retired the cd-keys for the weekend trial, after the sale finish the would put the key again to redeem the gog version.
Edit: Now http://www.thewitcher.com/backup show with the 404 error, the correct link is http://www.gog.com/witcher/backup

The cd key is up again, and the link now work with or without the slash, curious indeed.
Bought The Witcher 2 from Steam for $3.99.

You can use the first method to redeem a GOG copy, but you have to install all 15GB of it first.

On first run, Steam will allocate a key for you and then you have an option to copy the cd-key to clipboard.
I copied the key, then went to GOG and redeemed a DRM-free copy.

Hope this helps though those with bandwidth limits will have to be careful since you'll be downloading 30GB(+10GB for bonus materials) this month.

Are you talking about downloading the Steam version? Because you can't download and launch games via the gog downloader, you need to access your account in the site (https://secure.gog.com/account/games), then open The Witcher 2 tab and download the installer via the gog downloader or manually (manual download has you download multiple parts, so I highly recommend using the downloader).
In the F) option, there does not exist the step 4, that "No" doesnt exist, the page assume than I have the proof of the purchase.
The problem is than I got the game in a steam trade, so I have no proof. Is there something than can be done in this case?
Edit: Already fixed ;)

Just came across this, tried using A/ it worked a treat. Thanks
Is this serious? Did I get a free copy from this website just because I've bought it on steam?

No. You got a free copy because you bought The Witcher 2 somewhere besides GOG. CD Projekt RED & GOG are sister companies.

Contrary to the bias against Steam here, a lot of people like to have their games on Steam. DRM-free is great and all, but Steam is probably the only tolerable client/account-based DRM (and it's DRM is very lightweight). I wouldn't mind having a copy on both platforms, just for backup sakes. :)
