voodoo47: GOG version is basically the new engine plus bugfixes. no graphics changes, no retouched effects or anything like that - it's as vanilla as it gets without a retro computer.
Excellent, that sounds even more enticing!
After reading some more into it, from SS2's reputation I never would have guessed just how buggy and "imperfect" the game originally was, at least in lots of small details. It's really interesting how many mods there are that really only change what is obviously and pretty much undoubtedly not the way it was supposed to be originally.
So, thanks for clearing that up for a future SS1/2 player! Now, I only need the time for it...
System Shock 2 got Patch 2.46 today, when will this reach GOG?

GOG has been using it for a while now.

System Shock 2

Changelog for Patch 2.46 (added 30 January 2018):

** Windows only **

- The EXE has been renamed from Shock2.exe to SS2.exe to avoid old Windows compatibilities being applied on game launch
- Fixed the problem with battery not fully charging items sometimes
- Partially fixed the problem with Pyro field glow effect never going away after saving and loading while active
- The Recycler will no longer recycle equipped implants, preventing issues
- Fixed many miscellaneous problems on doors, lights, and eggs
- Fixed many upside down or badly rotated objects
- Fixed many cases of rogue props on objects
- Fixed quite a few cases of script duplication
- Fixed a few extreme cases of objects floating off walls and floor
- Fixed the almost completely broken 'Find Delacroix' quest (no more wild goose chases to Engineering as long as the player bothers to check the notes)
- Fixed a couple of quests that were starting up or completing in a slightly buggy way
- Fixed all the broken piles of worms in the last few levels
- Some tweaks to various existing setups to make them work smoother (explore the DML files if interested in details)
- Disruption grenades now actually deadly as per their description
- Rick turrets now corpse normally
- Grenade Hybrids now launch grenades from their hands instead of their abdomens
- The starting controls now use WASD
- The default music volume level has been lowered slightly
- Enhanced Precision disabled by default as having it enabled was causing issues with Windows 10
- The default resolution when starting the game is now 800x600,
- Fixed the Rick1 torpedo radiation area so it is not possible to progress without purging the radiation, as that could result the game getting into an unwinnable state
- Few Rick1 areas were made less prone to unintentional falls
- Restored the broken MedSci2 sub-armory code PDA note
- Fixed some AIs failing to perform their scripted event under certain circumstances
- Ops2 red assassin will trigger properly even when approached from the other side
- Fixed some AIs not being affected by the Stasis Field Generator
- Simplified the MEDSci broken door fix
- A few membranes were moved a bit in the Many level, as Dark is simply unable to handle transparent objects partially submerged in water without rendering issues
- The Shotgun now has a muzzle flash
- Navigation markers now properly identified by HUD, and can also be deleted by frobbing (so it's possible to actually get rid of them on levels that have no map)
- A few more fixes to some improper objects
- The in-game UI is now set at a fixed resolution, and will scale better at high (1920x1080 and above) resolutions. If you wish to disable this change, open cam_ext.cfg in NotePad, and add a semicolon to the beginning of the line 'd3d_disp_scaled_2d_overlay 800 600'

This actually includes the 2.46.22 build as well. Installers versioning remains unaltered (Apr 2017).

Thanks for update. However, I am afraid to try since Norton AV says this is medium risk and removed the install exe from my system after download. False positive I assume?
pretty sure an install.exe was not part of the patch. from where did you get it exactly?

anyway, both the galaxy build and the standalone installer are up to date as far as I'm aware, so I'd recommend sticking to that.

I downloaded it a couple of days ago when the update was first flagged and everything was fine then but to make sure I have just rescanned it with Avast to check and all is still OK so I'm sure it's a false positive.

Just so we're on the same page, I'm talking about System Shock 2, Version: 2.46 Update, Date Published: 30/1/2018, Size: 497MB

That's the one. I assume it is safe since it is from GOG, but you never know when someone hacks into this site. Thanks for the responses.

If you want to be really sure - although I do feel it's safe since it's from GOG - is to send the file to Norton reporting that you believe it to be a false positive and get them to check. That way it will be added to their whitelist and should cause no more problems.

System Shock: Enhanced Edition

Changelog for Hotfix 1e.16 (added 06 February 2018):

Fixed
- A Crash on Game Startup,
- End Boss playing too fast,
- Rare inability to save on 1TB+ hard drives.
Is anybody else having issues with Annelid Swarms not disappearing/timing out in the newest version (2.46, Published 30/1/2018)? They just stick around forever....

Only reason for it I can think of is, I was using the SS2Tool patched version of the game with some of the basic mods (attached image) and used Galaxy to update. It's the only real oddity I've noticed so far, besides that one door in the lower crew quarters on Ops still getting stuck halfway open/closed (also attached).

Actually, speaking of gravshafts, have you always been able to hold jump to "rise" up in gravshafts that only take you down?

the swarms not dying means script load failure, possibly your computer's security not allowing the game to read all its files - can you post your ss2.log/shock2.log, and an affected save? what is the name of your SS2 executable?

the door has been made to only open halfway to prevent other problems, so that's ok. also yeah, you can fool around the gravshafts a bit.

SS2.exe
Here is the save and .log in a zip file https://mega.nz/#!qoJxFboR!TupbA38nJB9zVEOr4qPRCz_VuC4_GnyBNyibGc-7hmY
It's from a brand new game post-updating and is just before heading into the crew section on Rec, so none of the swarm pods on the upper floor have been set off yet. Alternatively, if you're looking for one currently active, there's one still floating around the entrance/movie theater of the mall area, one in the crew area on Ops (near the halfway open door), and one in the cafeteria storage room on Ops (B?) near the maintenance bot ambush.

the save is fine, so I'm 99% sure it's just a messed up install - patching up with the tool and updating the game via Galaxy later is definitely not a good idea, you should choose only one system to keep the game up to date and stick to it (GOG/steam if you don't care about mods, the tool if you do).

repatching with the tool should fix the problem (you will need the perfect mode most likely).

//also, if we have a moderator looking, this probably should be split off into a separate topic.
