Moehrensalat: I have the same problem on Win XP SP3 with a Geforce GT 610. It makes X-Wing Alliance unplayable for me as well.
As with the latter game, the problems are caused by the newest NVIDIA drivers that discard some of the old renderer components necessary to make the engine/game run properly. That, and compatibility issues with DX11 cards and WIn XP. A lesson I sadly had to learn and accept..
With the fan patches and GOG fixes, it should be playable on Win Vista and up with Nvidia Hardware, as stated by others.
It does work in Software mode up to 1280x1024 though.
MarkoH01: I just tried it with Win7 and there it runs without any problem in full HD (something I could not do with the retail version because of a missing menu so GOG DID fix something). Yes, I thought that the problem is a result of the combination XP/NVidia card which needs a newer driver. I was thinking of writing a mail to NVidia because this problem occurs on many old 3D hardware accelerated games and the problem does not seem to occur on Win7 so I don't see why it has to occur on winXP. Nvidia linked me to thourough tests they made years ago to look into the problems, but apparently they didn't find any solutions.
Both replies said there is nothing to be done, other than to revert back to an older driver.
I know from the XWA Upgrade forum, that a lot of players wrote to Nvidia before and got the same response.
At least they tried to reproduce the errors and made the effort to test the games, based on that feedback.
I had hoped there would be a workaround with the GOG release and new attention the games are getting, but that's not the case.
I tried every fix and suggestion after countless hours of search and fiddling with the files. Including many ddraw.dll's and such. Nothing worked. I'll try again with the one you linked though.
