Moehrensalat: I have the same problem on Win XP SP3 with a Geforce GT 610. It makes X-Wing Alliance unplayable for me as well.
As with the latter game, the problems are caused by the newest NVIDIA drivers that discard some of the old renderer components necessary to make the engine/game run properly. That, and compatibility issues with DX11 cards and WIn XP. A lesson I sadly had to learn and accept..
With the fan patches and GOG fixes, it should be playable on Win Vista and up with Nvidia Hardware, as stated by others.
It does work in Software mode up to 1280x1024 though.

MarkoH01: I just tried it with Win7 and there it runs without any problem in full HD (something I could not do with the retail version because of a missing menu so GOG DID fix something). Yes, I thought that the problem is a result of the combination XP/NVidia card which needs a newer driver. I was thinking of writing a mail to NVidia because this problem occurs on many old 3D hardware accelerated games and the problem does not seem to occur on Win7 so I don't see why it has to occur on winXP.
You can try. I wrote a support ticket to GOG and Nvidia because of the glitches in XWA.
Nvidia linked me to thourough tests they made years ago to look into the problems, but apparently they didn't find any solutions.
Both replies said there is nothing to be done, other than to revert back to an older driver.

I know from the XWA Upgrade forum, that a lot of players wrote to Nvidia before and got the same response.
At least they tried to reproduce the errors and made the effort to test the games, based on that feedback.
I had hoped there would be a workaround with the GOG release and new attention the games are getting, but that's not the case.
I tried every fix and suggestion after countless hours of search and fiddling with the files. Including many ddraw.dll's and such. Nothing worked. I'll try again with the one you linked though.

Edit: After writing an e-mail to NVidia Support (could not harm) I tested one last thing and it works. The game runs in HW accelerated mode on my Windows XP system. I just extracted the content of this

into my gaming directory (thanks to teleguy).
Thanks to your download (and teleguy), I finally got XWA and JK working properly with Hardware 3D. Fantastic.
I get very low fps though. I hope that can be fixed somehow as well. I really appreciate it. Not sure why none of the workarounds/.dll's etc. I tried so far worked. But yours does. Much appreciated.

Glad that it worked :) Teleguy told me that this solution might cost a bit of performance and he recopmmended this for JK. JK for me works pretty well and fast. Do both games have extreme FPS issues for you or only XWA?

Both games have fps issues. I noticed that it probably has something to do with the Wine library attached.
I worked with Wineskin/Wine on Mac before, "ported" a few games and had similar problems with stutter.
I'm not sure how I'm supposed to reproduce and fix those problems on Windows though. I guess there is not much I can do, other than to upgrade my machine and ditch Xp for Win 7 after all. (Or play in Software mode, obviously. Which I will do for now ;-) )

I would rather recommend dgVoodoo but that doesn't work on XP.

Wine performance seems to depend mostly on the cpu.
No fixes were made, because LucasArts lost many many years ago the source code.
Without source code you can't do much.

That's probably the case. I don't really have the strongest CPU. Thanks again for the link though. It's definitely a step in the right direction. Maybe I come across a few other workarounds to try and fix it until I get new hardware.
SOmoene is bitching because it does not run on a computer OS that is still in the experimental stage?????

Give me a freaking break.

.
I mentioned in the "Jedi Knight / MotS Hardware Acceleration Graphic Patches for ALL" thread (sorry for the spam):

After you install the dgVoodoo patch, delete or rename winmm.dll in Jedi Knight's main directory. This file is used as the CD audio wrapper with this game. Renaming or removing this file will obviously disable the CD audio music in this game, but at least it works now.

This also applies to the other Star Wars games that have cd audio (although the DLLs are named differently). So it looks like the CD audio wrapper is causing issues in Windows 10. I am sure GOG will fix it in time.

Hope that helps!

Looking for a way to report the September 06, 2023 post from Alleekhan as spam I clicked the + symbol next to the "rate this post" thinking it would open a context menu. Nope, now it makes me look like I am upvoting a spam post. This is why I mainly read GOG posts and don't interact with them. Sigh.
