If you have some spare, you should give them your money.

Indeed. I'm pretty excited. I've made my pledge. Looks like they're half-way there ("Wooooah! Livin' on a Prayer!" *ahem*) - so yeah would be awesome if the Coles are making a new game :).
Needs a bit more support!

I'm actually surprised they haven't managed to make their money by now.

Not sure I can afford to up my pledge...
If any of you checked this out earlier in the campaign and dismissed it because it's tiled and top-down, you might want to look again. There is a new video and screenshots on the main KickStarter page that uses actual game art, instead of the placeholder art they used initially that turned off so many people.

This is sounding more and more like a very worthy successor to the QFG series that so many loved. (And there are some seriously cool rewards in the various tiers that you'll never see again.)

Agreed, there's been a lot of new updates since then, with great art, story and puzzle information and I don't think QFG fans have anything to worry about.

Oh and if there's any super-QFG fan out there, there's one original painting of art from the QFG series left for a backer to claim as a reward, among many other goodies.
Based on the latest Hero-U demo art,
http://forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/169374/hero-u-rogue-to-redemption-from-the-quest-for-glory-creators-now-on-linux
it seems like the finished art quality would hold up to the standards of most people who shop for games at GoG -- classic gamers being more appreciative of 2D art styles, instead of insisting everything must be 3D now. (Link above is to 1st post in another forum because it shows off the demo art in a fairly compact way, rather than the kickstarter home page which includes a ton of art for showing off the reward goodies).
Although Space Quest 3 was my first adventure game, I picked up a copy of Hero’s Quest later that year. Hero’s Quest was my first experience in RPGs and my definitive experience in fantasy. I’ll never forget the cover to that game.
I played the Quest for Glory games for several years and it was always my secret indulgence. I had some friends who played D&D, but I was always afraid to play because of my propagandized ignorance of the game. I was in my school library one day in 1994 when I noticed a paperback novel left on a table. The caught my attention. The red dragon in the background looked very similar to the cover of Hero’s Quest. I checked out Dragons of Autumn Twilight and the rest is history. I started reading fantasy novels like crazy, my friends noticed my interest in fantasy and invited me to play D&D, and I remain an avid fan of fantasy and RPG to this day. I even DM a 3.5 edition campaign of Dragonlance which you can read about on our [url=http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/autumn-dragons]wiki!
For me, Quest for Glory was a catalyst for fun, excitement, and socialization far beyond what the series offered in hours of play-time. I owe a lot to the Cole’s for their creative influence throughout the Quest for Glory series. This Kickstarter is my opportunity to repay the enjoyment they’ve provided me both monetarily and with zealous support!

Agreed. For me art isn't as important as story because most of my all-time favorite games were made by small publishers trying something crazy, and with the Coles at least we know they can do it. Hero Quest/QFG1 was my introduction to computer games and I've expected everything to have as least as much story ever since.

But that said, Hero-U is looking to be quite an attractive game even if it isn't as hi-res as many of the newer ones. And honestly I still have trouble with many of those games because they're realistic, but they're ugly- I picked my character in Oblivion entirely because it was the only model I could stand to look at for long periods of time.
Hey things are starting to look up for Hero U, momentum is starting to build now that we're in the final week. Over 130 new backers have signed up today, and the day is not over yet.

Here's a nice essay written by another backer, talking about how Hero U is going to follow in QfG footsteps in being different from the crowd and really darn cool:

http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=9115417

Excerpt:

Quest for Glory was an adventure/RPG hybrid, uniquely merging the deep storyline and complex puzzle solving of adventure games with the combat and character sheet attributes that make an RPG. You know how in Skyrim your character stats improve as you perform certain tasks? The Coles came up with that five years before Elder Scrolls: Arena was published. These people have proven that they can do innovation.

And that's what Hero-U is, not just a throw back to old skool gaming of the past but an effort to reach for the next level of roleplaying. "Choice and consequence" has been a buzzword for the last decade but the Coles want to make it more than a gimmick. They're building their game around the premise that the actions your character takes will have a definite, persistent impact on the game world and how it responds. Forget the so-called "sixteen" endings of Witcher II, they want to build a game that makes you feel like you have the freedom of playing a PnP RPG.

(Sorry about all the bold text, I couldn't find a way to set it off by turning it into a quote)

And that last line is especially significant when you consider that the Coles are planning an import feature for Hero-U, similar to QFG's import feature. The plan is for at least four games (and probably a fifth) in the Hero-U setting, each featuring a different character. But the "import" feature will allow the player to start each new game with all of Shawn's history from the first game in place. So, if you made an enemy in the first game, that character will still hate Shawn in the next game. If Shawn started a romance with someone in Hero-U, he'll still be involved with that person in the next game. If he killed a character, that character is still dead in the next game. And if he spared a life or helped someone, that character will still be grateful to Shawn. That's really a pretty cool feature, because the choices you make with Shawn in the first game, will still be affecting the Hero-U universe in the last one. And the same will go for the choices you make in each succeeding game. The player really gets to write his/her own story here, any way he/she wants to write it.

Actually... that same feature was one of the biggest things to catch my eye when I started checking out Hero U reviews. It's going to be awesome to see the story unfold from different viewpoints like this, like certain novels (the ones I've read were sci-fi, but anyways) except YOU helped make the story via decisions in earlier games.
It would be nice if they made it, but judging by the progress so far, I doubt they can find another $130k in 6 days.

You' might be surprised. Kickstarters often can come down to the wire, and the pace has been picking up quite a bit recently. We're also not going to let this go down without a fight.
That said every little bit still helps, so anyone who's on the fence or not sure come check us out again. If nothing else our comments section is a lot of fun and probably worth the $1.
I think the link is somewhere on this page already, but just in case:
