Same problem also with latest builds of windows 10... so we still have to rename .exe file...

(with other games i can't fix this problem, for example Quake II...)

remember that on all windows 10 versions (and i think also windows 8/8.1) all dx8/8.1 games are launched in a forced borderless mode (that these games doesn't support) and this cause many problems (antialiasing can crash all these games, and v-sync can't work)

try to use this file https://reshade.me/d3d8to9 if you want to use direct3d version of outlaws (that use dx8)
copy that .dll in outlaws folder

Tarepsed: I've tried everything here, but still havent managed to get the music to play. Sad because I seem to remember the soundtrack being quite good. :(

This is the what the dsound.log comes up with:
Have you renamed olwin.exe to something else? Have you also run olcfg.exe and made sure that the game is set to "DirectSound" on the Sound Configuration page and that the "CD Music" box is checked?

If you've done all of that, check the date of the winmm.dll file in your Outlaws folder. If it's not Feb 4th, 2016, then then try downloading and copying this winmm.dll to your Outlaws folder:

http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=86677599894420275145

That's the winmm.dll from my installation. It's the one that GOG installed for me, but, if you have a different date on yours, yours might be an older version.

BTW, if you're getting sound, then indirectSound is working, so you can probably not worry about that.

Hi guys, I have tried every solution listed so far, changing filename etc...still no music for me. Also tried it on two separate win10 machine with the same result. I guess at this point I'm just hoping that GoG would fix this issue eventually...
I've made a registry file that removes the settings that break the music on Windows 10. This is for those who don't want to rename olwin.exe to something else.

https://pastebin.com/sFKfrsNE

Save those lines to a .reg file and import it.

For those curious, the offending setting is one to disable themes. You may remember that that was a compatibility option on Windows Vista and 7, but is no longer an option on Windows 10, since it doesn't have those kinds of themes. Somehow, that "disable themes" compatibility setting affects music playback in a few of these old games (Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II is another), but you can't even go into the compatibility tab for the executable and disable it, like you used to, because Windows 10 doesn't expose that setting in the compatibility tab. That forces you to either edit your registry directly to remove it or rename the executable.

Another option that cause this problem is "Disable fullscreen optimizations", so don't use this option
(this option break some other programs/games...)

Just wanted to leave a short "thank you" here, I was about to return the game cause music didnt work, but contains so many memories. Now it works fine :-)

jnisbet: The reason why changing the name of olwin.exe to something else fixes the music is that the GOG installer adds compatibility settings to the registry which apply to olwin.exe, but not to executables with different names.

The registry settings are saved in the following locations:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Custom
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

If you delete the references to olwin.exe there, then music should work without changing the name of olwin.exe to something else. Of course, it's an easier solution to simply rename olwin.exe, but this is what you can do if you're comfortable with editing the registry.

FulVal: Ok i think that this is the cause of music problem; i was having this problem and i have fixed it removing all Outlaws's keys from Layers and from Custom.

Next i have added "run as admin" to all .exe files of game.

i don't know if this is caused by all two entries (custom and layers) or only one of these (i think custom)

edit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER has some problems too, with DISABLEWDM and DISABLETHEMES, and these can disable music in-game... so don't use it, at least don't use it with windows 10 Anniversary Update. (i think it works fine with all older build)
Wait so do i have to mess with the registry in order to fix the music problem? my issue is that the music will only play in the cutscenes, not while i'm playing the levels. im not familiar with messing with the registry... and when i looked up how to do it there was a warning that if you do it wrong you could brutally screw your computer.... im pretty afraid of messing with the registry.... it said "advanced" users and whatnot.... I also would like more detailed instructions as how to do this. like what folder do i open and where is it, how to get to it. how do i get to the registry? i think yall are talking about installing another program that lets you edit it...? Regedit? all i want to do is play my favorite childhood game and hear the amazing ost in the bg.... ;w;
If theres an easier simple solution that wont put my computer in danger pleeeease let me know. TwT
OMG I JUST REALIZED..... thats all you meant..... LITERALLY JUST CHANGE THE .EXE FILE NAME AAAAAAAAAA THANK YOU SO MUCH TwT IM SORRY FOR MAKING THINGS ALL COMPLICATED!!! This is perfect

THANK YOOOOU
Hello everyone! I've been struggling to make the music work inside of this game, just as the main person that created this thread have.
I've changed the name of the main executable file to something else and it did work. But, there's an audio issue that occurs, which makes all of the songs play on each level, instead of the singular song intended to play on that specific
level.

Because of this, I decided to try jnisbet's solution. And it worked!

Just renaming the game leaves you with these issues:
1)There is an audio issue that presents itself when renaming the main executable. It makes it so that instead of making the level 1 audio track playing on level 1, it plays the audio tracks from level 1 and then the other levels afterwards.
2) There's a blue screen covering the in-game menu instead of the actual background of the location you are currently in.

Doing what jnisbet suggested fixes issue #2, but issue #1 still exists. I will try to find a solution, and if I do - I'll let ya'll know what to do.

As a side note, this is my first post on the GOG.com forums... so, yeah. I hope I didn't mess anything up.

Thank you for your time, and Happy New Year! - Dv

Olwin.exe is in the game folder where you installed the game. If you're not sure where that is, the default location is C:\GOG Games\. You may've also changed that to C:\Games\ at some point. Olwin.exe will likely be in an Outlaws folder under one of those locations.

I rebought this game because I read on GOG it would run on Windows 10....unfortunately it seems it doesn't : perfect sound in startup and cutscenes, but no sound during regular play.

Still no regular fix for this ?

There are no music problems on Windows 10, it was fixed long ago. There's no need for a "regular fix". The problem is with your computer only.
Anyone in 2020 with this still not working despite all the solutions in this thread? Only thing I haven't tried is a different winmm.dll file as the link to the "working" one gets blocked by Firefox as unsafe.
