shaddim: new version in testing, 1.40o

That's great news; thank you. After all this time, I was afraid that they'd given up on implementing any more bugfixes and improvements.

Is it just me or does the 1.40o patch break everything?
How does one "try" this patch?

One does not simply try Master of Magic.

Make a copy of your Master of Magic game folder and apply the patch. If you don't like what the patch does, overwirte the master of magic game folder with the one you copied.

I copied the game files into a new folder on my desktop and then dumped (extracted) the patch files in. This obviously wasn't right. How does one "apply" the patch? Specifically? I am not a computer illiterate, but I am not a whiz either.

I tried using the saves editor I found on line with the same result. Somehow I am lacking the right tools or files to make these things work. Running Windows 8.1 on a reasonably advanced machine. I am not proficient with DOS or programming languages.

Thanks in advance for any advice. If this is not he appropiate place to ask these questions, please direct me to where I should ask.

Also, to Bookwrym627. I was playing MoM when it first came out. LIkely before you were born, if you are able to make such a silly comment. I still have the floppies. I stopped playing years ago, even before my computers no longer came with floppy drives. Last year I was looking around for new Windows versions of old games, found the GOG site and bought the files. And I have played quite a few games on the DOS-Box thing. I am looking for a way to spice up the game a little, in particular to make a little more room so I don't encounter the other wizards until I build up a little and thus can play a more challenging level. I like the game, especially conceptually. The "insectiside" patch looks like it not only fixes some bugs but adds some options, so I would like to give it a "try".

I admit, when I first started reading the part of your comment addressed to me, I started to get a little cranky at perceived insult. Thankfully, the rest of your comment helped me realize you probably didn't mean it as an insult. I've been playing on and off (when I had access) since very young; my comment used a meme quote to reference the addictiveness of MoM (personally, I'm of the opinion that being an adult does not require constant seriousness). I'd be impressed if you were playing Master of Magic before I was born, since it wasn't released until several years after I was born.

-I don't play Insecticide myself, so I don't have personal experience with installing it (which is why I didn't say anything to that effect at first). According to this post...

kyrub: Yep. Unzip into MoM directory and overwrite everything. You should be able to use your previous savegames as well.
...it seems like it should be a straight unzip into the MoM installed game folder. From your post, it appears you've tried something like that already. Did you try to unzip into the installed game, or into the GoG download? What tells you that your attempt didn't work?

-Judging from this link, the "installation" process for the patch should be very simple.

-I can't speak for the map editor; you'd have to consult any documentation you can find for the specific editor you tried to use.

-This is the right GoG sub-forum for asking about installing the insecticide patch.

Yes! I tried this, and the game went crazy. I randomly started building dark elf units in a halfling town. Nothing made sense.

YES! EXACTLY!
I copied the game files directly from their folder in File Explorer which is the Windows 8.1 version of Windows Explorer. Went to C:Windows/Programsx86/MoM (paraphrasing) highlighted the contents and copied to a new empty folder on my desktop. Then unzipped the patch into new folder, overwriting when two files had the same name. Then I clicked on the launch shortcut in the new file. The gane that started was exactly like the old one with no option for a landmass other than the standard three. So it didn't work because I did something wrong OR the patch is faulty. Based on other comments the "o" patch isn't ready yet so I am going to try again with the "n" patch. I am going to re-download the file from GOG into a brand new folder and then unzip into that new folder. I am using 7z by the way.

Bookwyrm: my comment was a little too pointed. I apologize. There was no need to get personal. I was a tad offended that I was asking for help and instead got a snarky comment. But I did go on to explain why I was asking so there would be no confusion and why I thought the comment inappropriate. I have played a lot of computer games over the years, almost all turn-based strategy, and I find tham fascinating and fun. But I am not a pro gamer or a tech whiz. Computer games are just one of my hobbies. Most of what little computer expertise I do have is a result of trying to find things out for/about the games or configure my machine to make them better. In this case, I am kinda at the point I was years ago where I win too easily at one level, but waste too much time losing at the next. So trying to find an in between where chance of winning is fairly high but it's a challenge.
For what its worth:

I unzipped the patch into the game file in File Explorer, not the copy on the Desktop. I used the"n" patch. Launched the game with the shortcut in the file in File Explorer. It appears to be working, so thanks for the help. Playing a "huge" at normal to start. Will see how it plays.
I'm glad you got it working! The only reason I didn't offer any assistance in my first reply was because (as I stated later) I didn't have any real experience with Insecticide.

For the record, I've heard that an Insecticide difficulty level is approximately as difficult as one difficulty higher of the base game. So "Normal" insecticide is roughly as difficult as "Hard" non-insecticide.

I've been running the "n" patch for a while now, and haven't had any issues. The "o" patch is definitely not worth it.
