I've put together a Wine wrapper for Mafia, allowing it to be played on Linux almost like a native game & with no Wine knowledge required.

Simply run the build script to create the wrapper. If the installer files are not alongside the wrapper build files then the path to them will need to be specified either by passing it as an argument to the build script with -respath="<path>" or by setting an environment variable named WINEWRAP_RESPATH containing it. You can change the path to build the wrapper in and the name of the wrapper directory with the -buildpath= and -dirname= arguments. The build path can also be set with the WINEWRAP_BUILDPATH environment variable.

The output will be a directory containing the game set up within a preconfigured Wine prefix, along with its own copy of Wine, extracted game icons, documentation, and start script(s). From there simply run the start script to play. The start script also includes options for creating a shortcut, configuring the wrapper etc.

(to uninstall simply delete the game directory and any shortcuts you created, and the game's user data directory in ~/.local/share if you don't want to keep your saves & settings)

User data is stored under ~/.local/share/mafia

Full details are in the readme.txt and release notes. Here is the download link:

The wrapper uses Wine 6.0. Wine and Winetricks will be downloaded automatically if not present; to avoid redownloading for other scripts the downloaded Wine package will be stored in ~/.cache/winewrap

Behar's widescreen fix is included to provide better support for widescreen resolutions.

I've fully played through the game and it ran perfectly, aside from a few apparently random crashes which could just be issues with the game itself (they weren't a big problem anyway). If anyone encounters any problems then post in this thread, Adamhm's Linux Wine Wrappers - News, FAQ &amp; Discussion and/or The "Judas&trade; does this run in Wine" thread v1.173.

TYVM for your work, adamhm
Would this wrapper conflict with an existing, say latest-version, installation of Wine?

Edit: No need to answer -found out myself. Your wrapper is definitely cool! Had a hard time with jerky mouse cursor on newer wine versions (dev + staging alike).

adamhm: I've put together a Wine wrapper for Mafia, allowing it to be played on Linux almost like a native game & with no Wine knowledge required.

Simply place the script, resource archive and installer files together in the same directory & run the script. The output is a directory containing a "GOG-style" ready-to-go Wine-wrapped version of the game (the build script also has the option to create a tarball of the assembled game package); from there installation is simply a case of moving the directory to wherever you want it installed to - then just run the start script to play :)

(to uninstall simply delete the game directory and any shortcuts you created, and the game's user data directory in ~/.local/share if you don't want to keep your saves & settings)

Running the start script with the argument "-s" will have it create a shortcut at a location of your choice.

User data is stored under ~/.local/share/mafia

Updated 2018/10/17: Just another small framework update.

The wrapper uses Wine 3.0 with CSMT enabled. Wine and Winetricks will be downloaded automatically if not present; to avoid redownloading for other scripts the downloaded Wine package will be stored in ~/.cache/winewrap

Hey man just installed it on my Elementary OS without a hitch! Thank you so much for this :) greatly appreciated
I want to make the game available to all operating system accounts. For this I usually put the game in /opt/. It seems impossible to do this here even though the game does save ~./locale/share/Mafia it also writes something in its main directory. How can this problem be solved?

Thank you!!!
All user accounts will need to be given write permission for the prefix so that user directories, symlinks and registry entries can be created/modified within it as required.
Hi, it would awesome to play Mafia on Linux Mint, but it's not working for me. The menu opens when I run "start.sh", but when I choose Play or Game Settings, no new window opens but the following lines appear in the terminal (with no apparent error):

Running: Game.exe
Working directory: /home/gaspar/mafia_wine/Mafia/prefix/drive_c/Mafia
Not forcing virtual desktop

Then, after a short while:

-> Red 1.000, Green 1.000, Blue 1.000
<- Red 1.000, Green 1.000, Blue 1.000

I tried with various desktop settings too (with 0 or specified resolution), but it makes no difference.

I have Linux Mint 20; x86_64; Dell Vostro 15-3568 (0794); Intel HD Graphics 620.

Here is a full version of the output for "play".

./start.sh play
Current desktop resolution: 1366x768
Detected 4 display output(s). Connected outputs:
eDP-1: 1366x768 (primary)
Gamma (R/G/B) = 1.000 / 1.000 / 1.000
Wine version: wine-5.0
Prefix is 32-bit
Userdata directory: /home/gaspar/.local/share/mafia
Running: Game.exe
Working directory: /home/gaspar/mafia_wine/Mafia/prefix/drive_c/Mafia
Not forcing virtual desktop
-> Red 1.000, Green 1.000, Blue 1.000
<- Red 1.000, Green 1.000, Blue 1.000

Any help would be super appreciated! I hope I'm just being stupid and there is a simple solution.
But never mind, I'll just resort to a Windows PC...
Chances are that you're missing some dependencies that Wine needs. Try running the start script from the terminal with WINEDEBUG="" set, e.g.:

WINEDEBUG="" ./start.sh play

And see if any error messages pop up in the terminal that give any clues as to what's failing.

You can also generate a system report and check that for any signs of issues; you can do this by running the start script and selecting "Advanced options..." --> "Create system report" from the menu
Thanks very much for the quick and helpful reply! Yeah you are right now I get a bunch of error messages, apparently related to one or more missing dependencies:

I made some attempts to install libudev.so, but no success, it's too fussy. But again, never mind, it's really not so important.

These two are likely what's causing the problems. Try:

sudo apt install libmpg123-0:i386 libxext6:i386
