I right-clicked on the Icewind Dale icon. I right-clicked "Properties" then clicked "Run as administrator" AND "Run using Win XP settings" and it worked perfectly!
Yes, I had the same problem with getting the game to run so I disabled the UAC. It now loads from create game/load game tab with no problems.
I got mine working from dicking around in the "compatibility" area after right-clicking the shortcut icon.

I am having some lingering graphics issues, though. The dialogue pop ups (on map) are huge black squares that block half the screen, and there are big black blobs over parts of my characters' "avatars" on the inventory screen.

Just quoting this (I know it's an old post), as I would suggest everyone make a habit of this when installing older games on Win7. I did this for all the IE games from GOG and they all work fine (well, barring some weirdness in Durlag's Tower in BG, but I highly doubt that has to do with Win7).
I had the issue where when I tried to start a new game the game crashed to a black screen, but solved it by giving the logged on user full security access to the icewind dale folder. Running the game as an administrator has the same effect, but this way you don't need to click on the uac prompt.
I found a good solution to the DirectDraw problem in Windows 7:
Install the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.6, then create an Application fix for IWD II or any other Infinity engine game, choosing the option "ForceDirectDrawEmulation"
This resolved all issues for me.

Win7 problem - When we first downloaded this game it was onto my laptop & the game would not run past the opening screen - when you clicked on create new game it went to a small black screen & stopped working. SOMEWHERE I read a post about Win 7 not coming with version of Direct X that you needed - downloaded it & it ran fine. My problem is now I need to do the same thing to allow it to run on a new desktop & I can't remember what I did!!!! Can anybody help?
I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, but....

I have attempted twice to contact Customer Support regarding this game and its multi-player mode.

And on the submission page it says: "Your message will appear in your "My Account" page in about 5 minutes. "

And I have yet to see either message posted in my account, (yes I was taken to the sent confirmation page after clicking send).

Am I not looking in the right place under the MY ACCOUNT tab?

Thanks
I had this problem. This post helped me.

1. Uninstall
2. Run as administrator (right-click and select Run as administrator)

My symptoms:

- Windows 7 64-bit
- When starting, movies run fine, go to create (single-player), fullscreen, but goes back to desktop with black rectangle in upper-left, presumably it's an 800x600 rectangle on my 1920x1200 screen.
- If I change to windowed, get to same point but window becomes unresponsive, though I can drag it around.
After installing with "Run as admin" and flipping on all the switches under 16bit options, the game starts up and runs beautifully. Granted, I would prefer to play it in 32 bit, but I can live with it to get the game to run.

SaltyDog: I too cannot get this game to work with my Win 7 64-bit machine. Unlike Planescape and BG1 which work fine. I have tried every suggestion on here to no avail.

Any advice for someone using ATI card? Perhaps setting up a specific profile?

Any additional suggestions are appreciated.
Huh, thats VERY strange that you are having issues with IWD and not the other 2.

I have ATI card(s) and Win7/64 bit, and I use the same profile for all Infinity Engine games (AI to "off", all options to "application setting", pretty basic all around)

What happens after you install the game?

Khalaq: I've had an issue with some games where they will run, and they will start to load, and I will get a black screen, and then the game will freeze up. After that, I get the Windows error message saying the program has stopped working and Windows is checking for a solution. This is typical for a graphics card crash.

Whenever I have had this problem, it is almost always a DirectX error or a corrupted file (corrupted during download). This also includes a possible dll error, and there was even one time when it was the game music that caused the lock-up.. The way I have usually resolved this in the past is to do the following:

1) Uninstall the game, delete it completely, and re-download the installation file;
2) Run the DirectX 9.0c setup.exe (or the DirectX setup that comes with the game);
3) Run DirectX web setup.exe (for the latest updates);
4) Reinstall the game in admin mode, making sure there are no old files on disk.
5) Set the game to run on the lowest possible settings to see if it will now run.

If I can get the game to run with everything "turned off" in the game and "turned on" in Windows Compatibility Mode (use XP SP 2 or earlier), then I can start adding things back in and see if it continues to work.

If I still cannot get the game to run, it is usually due to a graphic driver error. Some drivers have a difficult time with older games. I either wait for a new driver to come out (most companies try to fix reported problems), or I try an older driver for my card.

When trying to discover the cause of a computer problem, it is important to start with a "base" of what DOES work, and then add things, one at a time, until you find the setting that "breaks" the game. Once you know that, you can just work around that particular setting. Also, keep in mind that Anti-Virus and firewall programs can get in the way of a successful installation. Close out all other programs before installing, including UAC!

I hope that helps.

hi guys, i am totally confused done everythin recommended in this post - disabled UAC, disabled admin privilegies, turned off the other three thing under settings, running it under xp service pack 2 or 3, diasbled nvidia, just urned on integred carda and so on... my problem is I dont even get at starting the game ANY SCREEN - NOTHING not even the welcome game screen - NOTHING!!! just my mouse cursor does for 3 seconds like loading and than nothin - just keepin gettin some messages about temporaly changed screen resolution, some blac wannabe screens and THATS ALL . I really dont want to give up but a realyy DONT KNOW... shite... thx for any advices, even i think everything waz already told :(
Just to recap the most important things to check:

1) Make sure you have installed DirectX 9.0c. Most older games use 9.0c, and Windows 7 does not come with it. Also, older versions of Windows (XP/98/etc.) are liable to corrupt the DirectX files while you're fiddling with graphics drivers. Reinstalling DirectX 9.0c will not hurt anything, and it will ensure your copy of it is uncorrupted.

2) When uninstalling and reinstalling, make sure you delete ALL FOLDERS of the game. Leftover folders will cause bad data to be included in your new installation.

3) Make sure you run the Setup.exe binary as ADMINISTRATOR. Running a program as Admin will give Setup.exe permission to write important system data to the hard drive it may otherwise be forbidden to do.

4) Check online for your error message or crash description. Almost everything that can possibly happen to you has already happened to numerous other people, and most of the time, someone has found a solution (or at least an explanation) for it. This is how you find unusual fixes such as "Game works perfectly fine after I turn off Xfire," or "Setting sound to 24-bit solves the problem."

5) When you're ready to pull your hair out, TAKE A BREAK. Come back to the problem in a day or two, when you've had time to clear your head, and you are much more likely to find the answers to your questions. The person who knows how to help you isn't online 24/7.

I hope that helps.

Having problems starting the game. The whole intro video will play and bring me to the IWD menu screen t select multiplayer and single player and all that. When I go to create a game, the screen minimizes and freezes up. I have deleted every bit of content of this game off my computer and have re-downloaded it twice. I'm using Windows 7. Any advice?
