ransompendragon: @patryn, did you do the tweaks before or after you tried to run a game? (e.g. was it already working fine for you anyway?)
I'm sorry, I installed everything before I ran the game for the first time.

I did, however, switch all graphic options to software and 32 bit.
I also do not use any widescreen fix or something - I added 640x480 as a custom resolution in my nVidia control panel. This results in much nicer graphics in my opinion.

I also selected Admin-privileges and Windows XP SP2 in compatibility tab.

I don't think that desktop composition or scaling affects the game as long as it is run in fullscreen mode.

I have another question for this subject. I played the game quite a bit the other day created two separate save files and quit for the day. I came back to play it last night and the only saved files it had were from two days ago. I don't know where those files went.

Second, I have noticed several times where the game does not recognize that I a trying to speak to a certain character. I click on them and my character to go over to them and nothing happens. If I quick save and quick load then it responds to my talking actions. Have any of you experienced any of these things?
What fixed it for me was selecting 640x480 mode. I like simple fixes--should have tried that the first time.
Well, now I can create a party. Will post back if I have any further issues.

Good luck and thanks for the tips.
I'm on Vista and absolutely none of these fixes works for me. The game runs but I cannot create a game.

I like GOG, but this time they released a major game that is simply not working on Vista, and I get no response on the forum or via email from them.
I just installed GOG's Icewind Dale on my PC. I use Vista Ultimate 64-bit and I had absolutely 0 issues installing and running the game. Works like a charm, with 0 tinkering.

You get no response on the forum??? It looks to me like you've had plenty of responses to your post.

There are a few things which aren't clear from your postings, so I'd like to ask about them.

1) Did you run the installation as Administrator (right-click on "setup.exe" and choose "Run as Admin")?
2) Which video card are you running? And how recent are your drivers for it?
3) Did you actually try all of the things mentioned by other people (such as the custom resolution fix)?

If you are running a 64-bit OS, and/or you are using an Nvidia card, there are various small things that can get in your way. For example, the Nvidia driver might be calling a default setup based upon the specific game (Icewind Dale) which is actually incompatible with your system.

The trick is in figuring out what it is about your setup that is causing the problem. As posted, previously, other people with Vista are running IWD successfully, so it can be done.

"Simply not working" is simply not true. There are a lot of people on the forum that don't have a problem. And we have to assume that there are even more people that don't visit the forum because it runs fine on their machines.

As other said, have you really tried everything? Like disabling UAC during installation, using REAL admin-rights, using some other directory (maybe C:\IWDALE), maybe even changing permissions of the directory and the files (give "everyone" full access), everything?

Have you tried uninstalling the game and reinstalling it?

---------------------------

I had a weird issue of my own that I don't think I saw on the forums. I'll put it out here in case someone else has this issue.

Whenever I would create a new game, roll characters, and start, the game kept loading up with a single character, a mage named "test". I would get the intro narration, or the opening conversation with Hrothgar. It seemed to be loading a save game, so to resolve it, I found two places that I deleted the contents of the save game directory. They are (from memory)...

<user>\Appdata\Local\VirtualStore\GOG.com\Icewind Dale Complete\mpsave
and
C:\Program File (x86)\GOG.com\Icewind Dale Complete\mpsave

Once I delete the contents of that directory, I could start a new game with my rolled characters, and everything else seems to be fine.

I should mention, I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. I also had to turn compatibility mode to Window XP (Service Pack 3) as well.

I too cannot get this game to work with my Win 7 64-bit machine. Unlike Planescape and BG1 which work fine. I have tried every suggestion on here to no avail.

Any advice for someone using ATI card? Perhaps setting up a specific profile?

Any additional suggestions are appreciated.
Khalaq,

I did right click on setup and run as admin.

I use Nvidia on a 64 bit vista gateway computer specced for games that is about 2 yrs old, the drives are up to date.

I can't see how to do a custom resolution in the Nvidia control panel, but how could resolution be the reason why the game won't allow me to load or create a new game. However, of course I'll try any suggestions. I believe that I've tried all of the suggestions listed in this forum topic.

I realize that there must be some random setting somewhere that is causing the problem, but that is why I use gog in the first place. Every other game has worked. I assumed that the folks at gog.com are generally aware of potential compatibility issues, and should be able to hear that I have a vista machine, and tell me which of maybe 3-5 things the problem is, and why.

When I said that I had no response from gog on email or forum, perhaps some of the posters are from gog, but they don't identify themselves as such, from what I have seen.
I've had an issue with some games where they will run, and they will start to load, and I will get a black screen, and then the game will freeze up. After that, I get the Windows error message saying the program has stopped working and Windows is checking for a solution. This is typical for a graphics card crash.

Whenever I have had this problem, it is almost always a DirectX error or a corrupted file (corrupted during download). This also includes a possible dll error, and there was even one time when it was the game music that caused the lock-up.. The way I have usually resolved this in the past is to do the following:

1) Uninstall the game, delete it completely, and re-download the installation file;
2) Run the DirectX 9.0c setup.exe (or the DirectX setup that comes with the game);
3) Run DirectX web setup.exe (for the latest updates);
4) Reinstall the game in admin mode, making sure there are no old files on disk.
5) Set the game to run on the lowest possible settings to see if it will now run.

If I can get the game to run with everything "turned off" in the game and "turned on" in Windows Compatibility Mode (use XP SP 2 or earlier), then I can start adding things back in and see if it continues to work.

If I still cannot get the game to run, it is usually due to a graphic driver error. Some drivers have a difficult time with older games. I either wait for a new driver to come out (most companies try to fix reported problems), or I try an older driver for my card.

When trying to discover the cause of a computer problem, it is important to start with a "base" of what DOES work, and then add things, one at a time, until you find the setting that "breaks" the game. Once you know that, you can just work around that particular setting. Also, keep in mind that Anti-Virus and firewall programs can get in the way of a successful installation. Close out all other programs before installing, including UAC!

I hope that helps.

@Khalaq Thanks for that post, Very helpful - I know I should do things step by step but usually end up changing more than one parameter and so am often not quite sure what actually fixed my issues.

As I posted above changing the resolution in the config utility to 640x480 fixed it for me. (I also happned to install it in C: and not in programs) After checking this thread yesterday and seeing Khalaqs post I thought, what the heck, and bumped the resolution back up to 800x600 and it keeps on working. Yipee.
Though this isn't what inevitably worked, I'm marking it because of the OpenGL thing-- after I reinstalled the game, I disabled OpenGL and it worked. I don't know if its my NVIDIA card or Win 7 or both, but trying to use OpenGL = fail.

Agetian: Hmm, personally I haven't tried running it on Win 7 yet, but my assumption is that it might have something to do with the current acceleration mode - try the following:

1) in Config, try enabling the Use OpenGL 3D Acceleration if you haven't tried it yet.
2) If (1) doesn't work, then disable it and then inside the game, switch the game to 16-bit color and enable the boxes "Software Mirror Blt", "Software Transparent Blt", "Software Standard Blt" - see if that changes anything.

Hope this helps!
