dStefano: It's a false positive. I downloaded it from worldofgothic.de, got no problem at all with Firefox and Avira. I checked the md5 hash and it's, correctly, 7DDF2AC4E64092FF33E8FC753119FCDD

@auroraparadox: mark it as an exception in your antivirus settings. I had no problem at all with Avira (no warnings whatsoever) and even proceeded to do a system scanner without finding anything. I think you should not worry about those warnings.

auroraparadox: I can't install the Gothic 2 fix. When I run the fix installer and I change the path to the correct one the install button is greyed out. The installer is also in German so I may have missed something.

I have Gothic 2 Gold (GOG Version) installed on my system.

Any thoughts?
I had the same issue. Searched the forums and finally found someone talking about it. A ball-slappingly obvious solution though d'oh! Go into Gothic II's System folder and rename Gothic.exe to Gothic2.exe. Then point the installer to the main Gothic II folder (not the system folder). The installer will then work. Worked like a charm for me.
I have tried this and still the installer button is greyed out . Tried to rename it and still no go. Both of these games used to start up fine on my WIN7 pc.. Now what has changed? I'm no longer able to play them.

THANK YOU!!! The renaming fixed it for me as well. Go with many blessings *waves hands*.
I think the D3D11 renderer, L'Hiver Edition and the Carnage Graphics Mod should be added to the start post. ;)

chautemoc: Note: all items here apply to Gothic & Gothic II, except the Gothic 3 Community Patch.

Custom resolution
For Gothic or Gothic II, open your gothic.ini file in the install folder and change the "zVidResFullscreen" items to your default resolution, and the zVidResFullscreenBPP item to 32. Now copy the file and rename it gothic.in, then open notepad and paste this text:

copy gothic.in gothic.ini /Y
gothic.exe
exit

Save this as gothic.bat (all file types) in the same folder. Launch as normal.

For Gothic II, use the unofficial patch below to improve FOV (this comes with potential concerns, though).

Gothic mouse controls
Change the control settings to "alternative" in your in-game settings for somewhat reasonable controls by modern standards. Gothic controls were designed around a keyboard with mouse support added late in development, however, so the experience will never be great. Note to newbies: to interact, attack, etc., hold the left mouse button and use the WASD keys as appropriate to "direct" your action (eg. W to open a chest/attack forward, A or D to attack sideways, etc).

kohan69 recommends setting the mouse sensitivity line in gothic.ini to 3 instead of 1. Experiment with numbers 1 through 10 to find what you like best.

Gothic Unofficial Patch
Popular patch by Ironkeep Studios which fixes many bugs still present in the latest official version. Some say it causes more problems than it fixes, so be cautious. My personal experience with Gothic was almost bug-free, so you may want to go without.

Gothic Textures Patch
Significantly enhances the graphics of Gothic. Player Kit (below) required.

Gothic Player Kit
Install this to play/use the fan made modifications (mostly adventures) found here.

Unlock framerate (Gothic)
After installing the Player Kit, download and install the patch above to unlock the framerate from 25fps to whatever your machine can handle. Should provide a much more smooth gameplay experience.

More blood
To increase the amount of blood in Gothic / Gothic 2 (it was censored by the powers that be, if I recall), open Gothic.ini (found in your install folder) and change "bloodDetail 1" to "bloodDetail 3". This is useful for tracking enemies, also.

Stop NPC chatter
If you're annoyed by the frequency of repetitive NPC chatter in Gothic, do the following:

-create 'speech' folder in _work/data/sound
-download the NicoVDFS tool
-set root path in NicoVSFS to _work/data/sound/speech
-open speech.vdf with it
-extract all files from it to the new folder
-delete speech.vdf
-search folder for 'smalltalk' and delete all files containing the phrase

The same can be done with Gothic 2 using this version of the tool, though it seems to cause stuttering.

Thanks to alexei_net for this tip.

Gothic II IronKeep Community Patch
Another series of bug fixes from IronKeep Studios. Also improves FOV on widescreen monitors and improves textures. One user warns against installing the full patch and going a more minimalist approach (details here). As with G1, the game is pretty well bug-free, so you may want to skip this.

Gothic II Texture Pack
Significantly improves the textures and meshes in Gothic II.

Command console
In either game, enter the character/status screen and type "marvin" (no quotes). Exit the screen. You should see "Marvin mode" in the top left of the screen. Now, after hitting F2 to open the console, you can activate a variety of commands for various effects (see: Gothic commands, Gothic II commands).

One function which should prove useful to most is teleportation -- handy if you have to get halfway across the world and don't want to walk. To do this in Gothic, type goto waypoint [waypoint] -- in the brackets goes the location you want to travel to. See for the list of accepted location codenames. For Gothic II, simply type the name of the desired location listed here.

Gothic 3 Community Patch
Very popular overhaul which was since incorporated by JoWood into an official package. It makes the game look and play better improved performance, mechanics, graphics, plus bug fixes, and a whole lot more. For all the details, consult the . GOG has confirmed the final version (1.74) is compatible with the GOG release.

---

Further tweaking can be done by opening gothic.ini and reading descriptions. Be careful, of course, and keep a backup default copy in case you mess something up.

If I've missed anything imperative or useful, please let me know and I'll add it.
I'm trying to change the resolution of Gothic 1 by following these instructions. Should I delete the original ini file after changing the zVidResFullscreen ? Or keep both that and the new gothic.in file and then create a 3rd file (named Gothic.bat)? So three files: The original ini file and 2 new files.
I really feel that the consensus is that a starting guide nowadays ought to include at least the system pack and potentially the renderer.
This is a complementary patch to ICP's G1 unofficial patch that people may be interested in:

Hi! I wanted to remove 25fps lock on Gothic 1, so i installed Gothic Player Kit and GothicFPS mod (player kit is required for this mod).
Everything works great, game runs very smooth now. But in character stats screen 2 additional skills/traits appeared: "Master of Fire" and "Regeneration". I've read that they are part of some mod.

Will game work as intended, since i have no mods installed except those (GPK and GothicFPS)?
You can bypass the fps limit on gothic 1 without modding the game - create a profile for the game in your GPU config app and force VSYNC, well it works for ATI cards, havnt tested it on an nvidia.

Decided to copy all these posts in one for easier navigation - Gothic series modding guide

Gothic 1

1. Install the game
2. Install Player Kit
3. Install System Pack
4. Install Textures_Patch_Freddy-0.8.exe
5. Install ThielHater's texture patch

Gothic 2

1. Install the game
2. Rename gothic.exe to gothic2.exe in /system
3. Install this patch
4. Go on with the PlayerKit
5. Install SystemPack
6. Install the D3D11 renderer
7. Download and extract the base game normalmaps to system\GD3D11
8. Download and extract Vurt's improved textures normalmaps to system\GD3D11\replacements

This gives you the enhanced Gold Edition without any significant game play changes.

Gothic 3

For those who would like to play through G3 for the *insert appropriate number* time, here's some additional information as the OP is slightly outdated. I will also post links and installation guidelines for the most commonly used mods.

1. Install the game
2. Get the latest community patch
3. Update the community patch with the latest fix
4. Install Questpaket
5. Patch QP 4.2 to make it compatible with the latest community patch
6. Install the latest Content mod
7. OPTIONAL: If your game stutters or have performance issues, consider using Gothic 3 Cleanup, quick guide here.
8. Enjoy the massively enhanced game

Note to GoG: it would be awesome if you dedicated resources to host mods for these old games as well, external links are taken down on a regular basis.

Let's do the same with G2, just to make it simple and straightforward.

1. Install the game
2. Rename gothic.exe to gothic2.exe in /system
3. Install this patch
4. Go on with the PlayerKit
5. Install SystemPack
6. Install the D3D11 renderer
7. Download and extract the base game normalmaps to system\GD3D11
8. Download and extract Vurt's improved textures normalmaps to system\GD3D11\replacements

This gives you the enhanced Gold Edition without any significant game play changes.

There are plenty other mods around for this exceptional game, but the above gives you some basis to build on.

Didn't work for me on nVidia.
Actually after those experiments with moving out modified exe files and renaming back original ones, and after that again moving back modified exe's (and renaming original ones) i have no such skills like "Master of Fire" and "Regeneration".
Your suggestion didn't work how it was meant to work, but it worked in another way!
+rep and thanks :)

edit: i think i have used "Verify and Repair" feature of the Galaxy client before moving back modified exe. Some files were downloaded and replaced in the process. Probably it did the trick.

mmarci: tract Vurt's improved textures and the L'Hiver Edition normalmaps to system\GD3D11\replacements
Thanks for the posts. They ought to be moved to the OP.

I got one question regarding n8 though:

As per this post the 2 extra packages of normal maps only work if you use either Vurts of the L'Hiver mod. Are you sure step 8 is correct?

You are right, they only make sense if you use the appropriate mod. The reason I included them is to give everyone the opportunity to tweak the game to their liking and make changes later on if they don't fancy a feature or two.
