Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Zeus, Pharaoh, Age of Wonders, and other strategies 50% off!

We know that you like to be in charge. We know that you like that feeling of power and the constant pressure of one life-and-death decision after another. Whether you are in the battlefield, commanding your troops, in a warlord's tent deciding the life and death of your subjects, or in a city hall, placing miniature buildings on a map--you flourish. Leadership is your element. Knowing that, we prepared a [url=http://www.gog.com/promo/strategy_weekend_promo_080313]Superb Strategy Promo to cater to your tastes. Or rather: to nourish that ever-present hunger for power that you have. Let's take a look at two of the games on this weekend's offer, shall we?

Many people consider Heroes of Might and Magic 3 to be the best instalment in the greatest fantasy turn-based strategy series. The conquest of Erathia is still taking place on thousands of computers worldwide, as the game remains universally popular among strategy gamers. Billions of hours worth of collective playtime were, and still are, being put in this title, both in single-player campaigns and multi-player struggles. We offer you the Complete Edition of the game, containing the Armageddon's Blade and The Shadow of Death expansions, for only $4.99.

If you enjoy the turn-based mechanics of the HoMM series, but you would like to immerse yourself even deeper in a complex and extensive gameworld, don't miss Eador: Genesis. When we originally released this Russian masterpiece, we said that the single-player campaign can take up to 200 hours to beat. Our colleague from the support team, who knows the game by heart came asking later how did we come up with such a number. We told him, that 200 hours is the expected playtime stated by the developer. "Must have been a speedrun"--our friend commented, and we believe him (GOG.com support is known to be trustworthy, afterall). So brace yourselves--for only $2.99 you'll get more than 200 hours of playtime.

But that's only scratching the surface of our weekend promo! There are many more games to challenge your leadership skills on the Superb Strategy promo page, so go ahead and check them out now! The offer lasts until Tuesday, March 12, at 4:59AM GMT.

As usual, below you'll find a new episode of This Week on GOG, a short video guide to recent events, promos, and other happenings on the site. By the way, if you haven't already, you might want to follow the GOG.com channel on Youtube, so you won't miss our shows, specials, and exclusive trailers.
Wow, the best promo in a very long time. There is not a single bad game in it and several of them are just a steal for the asked promo price.

I highly recommend Eador: Genesis and King of Dragon Pass.

Senteria: Yay a new potential play by email player. :D

jeffgog: How long does it take to play a game via e-mail? Like, months?

(Stealth edit: just saw another of your replies where you said it took a year! Holy Moley!)

Might fit in nicely with my multitude of daily tasks, though. I really like async on-line games on my iPhone. Take my turn when it's convenient, and my opponents do the same. Is AoW PBEM similar?
Yeah that was the longest ever I believe. 91 turns. Mind you it was played in an XL map, and some players had to move to a new home, went on vacation, their honeymoon. things like that. That makes the time period longer. Anyway a turn takes about 5 minuten to 1 hour. Like at the end phase where I had almost the entire map to coordinate.

But yeah general rule is send your turn within 48 hours. AoW PBEM is exactly that. Play your turn at your leisure.
Hats off to another great promo!
Strategy games are the best in my view, thanks!

JMich:
Omikron sounds like an accurate guess. That would be cool.
I had forgotten about King of Dragon Pass. I have some of the special already but every game on it is a must buy for me.
First, KoDP is freaking awesome. Good choice.

I've only played the first two AoW and the first one is much better than the second IMO. I heard the third one is good, but I don't know much about it.

gandalf.nho: Thinking in get Eador: Genesis, how is the difficulty?
avatar
teshra: Has a bit of a learning curve, and pretty much all the documentation you find online is in Russian, but once you get the hang of it, its very fun. My 2 cents.

My question: heard lots of good things abou King of Dragon Pass so getting that but for you Age of Wonders fans, if I can only get one, which one of the three is the one you'd strongly recommend? Thank you.

JMich: Nomad Soul?
avatar
SLP2000: Oh, right. Never played it (and never heard about it before gog era), so not a first guess for me.
I first thought Nomad Soul too but TET seems to be bigging up the 'spooky' element (unless that's a red herring?) So... Undying?

Vitek: To all interested in Eador. It indeed is good game, as people mentioned here already but it is also very slow game and sometimes quite tedious. Single maps last there many hours and often you have to repeat same thing over and over and over again. It also often forces you the same cheesy tactics (like certain spells), because it is hard. Plus you can't load the game (unless you back up the save folder) and there are maps you must win, otherwise you lose whole campaign and potentially tens of hours.
True! I played about 200 hours and then lost the campaign. But I was positively surprised, I just hate those unlosable handholding games. I dont see it as "lost hours", I had great fun, and I have restarted and played another 100 hours on a new campaign.
But I really disagree on repetitive or cheesy, its on you to try new things, and working strategies ar enot cheesy, they are smart. :D. Its less repetitive than any other 4x game.
This concerns me..... if GOG keeps offering games I feel like I'd enjoy at sale prices then this sets a precedent for them to continue doing it and consequently take all of my money. :P

Sorry, woke up to find the other thread brimming with frothy rage and decided to avoid it. Thanks GOG, been wanting the AoW series for a while and I hear non-stop praise for Eador and KoDP, throw in Stronghold too, if you please.
Superb strategy promo, indeed! ... What? I already own all of the games?! Fudgicles!

Great sale although i have the games i want already.
Buy Age of Wonders or else.
Excellent promo. I have been playing Eador:Genesis nearly non-stop since I bought it a month back. Not a bad title in the bunch from what I can see.
That's some promo! Only really good, great and fantastic games here. (I haven't gotten to Eador and King of Dragon Pass yet, but they look very promising.) The only one I don't own is Zeus, which is because I really dislike the graphics and setting, but I presume that it plays as good as Caesar III and Pharaoh. Despite the vast amount of greatness I'm only going to recommend one game - Age of Wonders.

A magnificent strategy game, released in 1999 yet never surpassed not even by it's two sequels. The amount of tactical and strategic possibilities in this game is vast. The 12 factions (the major races and their allies, slaves and masters) are balanced well against each other with a wide variety of strengths and weaknesses. The hero units are not balanced as well since they can become very strong against normal units and since some of their abilities are much better than some of the others. I don't think this is much of a problem for single-player, since the player can choose which way to play the game. For multi-player it is best to make some rules before the game starts.

The setting and the execution of it is fantastic. Handmade portraits and descriptions for every unit (a few units share the same portrait.) and really good backstory and music. This is a fantasy game that takes itself seriously (though there is some subtle and dark humor here and there), it is not self-aware, and more than in most fantasy games it makes you believe that these elves, orcs and lizardmen are real "people" from real civilizations struggling for survival.
There is a heavy inspiraton from Tolkien, AD&D and other computer games here, but it is done in such a way that it never feels generic and trite. And the designers seem to have been influenced by myth and history as well (which is the proper way of making good fantasy).

One of my favorites are the civilization of the Highmen, which is a great combination of Christianity and paganism. In their military they use both valkyries, titans, astra (female angels with burning swords), saints, avengers, as well as cavalry, infantry and archers. One interesting thing about them is that they are described as "pure good" thus supposedly of a higher moral standard than the other good races. Yet they are less tolerant, more warlike and genocidal than them. The individualistic Elves, the hedonistic Halflings and the workaholic Dwarves are all more similar in their values to us modern Westerners than the spiritual and purity obsessed Highmen.
