As for game download speeds, for me GOG is faster than Steam for the simple reason that GOG games I can download from my workplace's far faster internet connection. With Steam I can't, because its client refuses to work through proxies (e.g. in corporate networks).

Sure I have an uncapped 10Mbit/s ADSL at home, but for the multigigabyte games even that feels slow, especially if I want to download several of them in one swoop. At my work that is much speedier.

This is not necessarily because of 'another' client being linked to the game. Most of the Steam users who prefer a single library are stll going to want to own it on Steam despite having to Uplay it then as well, since you'll have to go through that anyway, no matter where you get it. (and for people who use Steam often, that's already on anyway so it's just clicking to start the game)

Ideally though there wouldn't have been another client obviously. Looks like Uplay is trying to be another Steam though (and seem to be taking a more progressive stance on it than Origin so far by adding all those other publishers). Not ideal, but at least it's competition, and that can't be all bad :)

which is extremely silly to say.... it is not an emulator... not by a longshoot.... it is not even comparable, which is why I say you are just inventing something.... I am going to call you also a silly man now - you are a silly man.

Do you honestly think using Steam is the same as an emulator? Anyway, I use Amiga Forever, I emulate C64, I emulate SEGA Megadrive, I use MAME... and I do consider myself a PC gamer as I do it all on my PC. But maybe I should just call myself a Gamer and let all this elitist bulls**t classification to those who thinks it matter.

Just want to chime in that Steam is guilty of the constantly updating a game as well. I had a handful of games that Steam just loved to re-download for no reason (In some cases downloading 10GB or more which kills my bandwith) and many times it would just re-download the whole game. Would be nice if Steam at least compressed the data you downloaded to save on bandiwith.

I did select disable auto-download for many games after that but Steam seemed to ignore this and just download it all again.

What!? Are you out of your mind? You absolutely must get the newest AAA games the day they come out, or else all the cool kids will be playing it before you. In fact, you should preorder your games, buy them even before they are out, that way you get cool bonuses like hats and skins. You know, power to the gamer! Not to mention, if you don't buy the game within two months no one else will be playing it, everyone will be playing the next new game and they will all laugh at you because you are poor and cannot afford the newest games. While you are waiting for the next game to come out you should keep buying the DLCs to make sure you always have the best experience. Don't forget achievements, no one will care when you get a useless shiny sticker three months after the game is out, you need to get them as soon as possible to prove your gamer reputation.

Not to mention you are killing game devs with you attitude. Everyone knows the first two months are most important and if you don't buy the games you are not supporting the devs, they will have to move in with their parents again, starve to death and get a boring day job instead of making games for each other. You are killing the industry and you should be ashamed of yourself, you are as bad as software pirates and people who buy used games.

Well, rescently friends asked me to quickly join them in L4D because they had one free slot. So I quickly launch the game and then this pop up:

Even tho I have really quick Internet, it was downloading terribly slow. It took me few minutes to download it. It would be ok if it would be a game update, but for fak sake why I have to wait for client to update?

I'm not saying that Steam is worse than other solutions, but anything that forces me to run client, update client etc. is bad for me.

well you got caught in a wrong time , usually the client updates are done very rarely but we are now in a transition process where they are upgrading the client since they launched steam for linux expect more client / steam games update till it stabilizes , been getting a lot of half life 1 / cs 1.6 updates as well

Why does it take people so long to download things? Im living in a farm land area in the uk and a 10gb download only takes 2 hours.

There should be a study done to see why certain gamers have such problems because after all these years of using steam etc I have never had a problem with anything that wasn't my own fault.

Ignoring the fact that was one small part of the complaint, the point was I download at about 700k a second from Steam and about 200k a second from amazon.
Firstly my Steam-purchased Uplay games update automatically through Steam, negating a large portion of the above frustration.

Secondly I am comparing this process to Steamworks, not just buying any old game on Steam.

That is because Games for Windows Live is a bad, bad piece of DRM. Batman and Dark Souls are totally worth it though.
