As others have pointed out, GOG is selling much different products. Gabe Newel has said he dislikes 3rd party DRM on Steam but the publishers want it. That makes sense as far as them needing to have games to sell, but I bet at this point they wouldn't lose many titles if they outright banned other DRM systems.

Not really. Gamergate says "DRM free" on the page for games that still use their downloader thing. You are simply backing up the files in my opinion, not cracking anything.

I might be removing the DRM on a game billed as DRM free. That is entirely possible. And I believe the DMCA would make me a criminal under US law. Too bad I'm in the EU where I believe the parallel they managed to get through of that has a clause to the effect of it having a degree of effectiveness.

But you're right, unless it's a game like the D&D master collection where the GG installer just installs everything to a folder and asks you to run the setup.exe in that folder, I guess I am circumventing copy protection of a sort. Bettercall the feds on Microsoft and Apple. Both their OS'es come with tools to break DRM and I believe that distributing software which can be used to remove DRM is in fact illegal in the US. ;-)

But actually I'm not sure if you need to login and have an internet connection if you already have the installer cached. I never tried copying the downloaded files and the installer onto a clean computer before, might be worth a try to see if it only requires the user/pass to download.

At any rate. I'd still say the DRM free games on GG are in fact DRM free. The fact that you need a username and password to download and install it is not what I'd consider DRM. Heck Gog has for instance on Riddick got more DRM than that what with there being actual DRM .dll files loaded with the game, even if it's neutralized.

You ignore the real issue here. Gamersgate is selling games labeled as DRM Free while they are not. This is the real issue here and someone should've already sued them :P

And you know, that kind of arguments you provide I could tell "well, this software is DRM free, because if I remove the plug from my router, the authetication app is going crazy and says authenticated."

You seem to be missing the point that the game is in fact DRM free, though the installer might technically not be.

Oh, so if I have a game that says "3 activation limits" , it's actually DRM free, because I authenticate the game when I install it, and if I run it afterwards it doesn't connect to online servers or anything, so it's DRM free after authentication.

We have to agree to disagree here, because I don't feel any need to discuss GamersTurd anymore...

If you can change the hardware in the computer and it doesn't care, then yes. The game is DRM free. The installer is not.
