Tikiman in trouble!
PixelJunk Monsters HD, the ultimate edition of the tower defense game full of soothing colors and woodland magic, is available 20% off on GOG.com. That's only $7.19 for the first week.
You are the Tikiman, defender of the forest, guardian of the critters, keeper of your little tikki offspring. The woodland is in great peril. Hordes of twisted monsters seek to destroy your habitat and feast on your helpless tikikids. This cannot be allowed! Lucky for you, you've got the shamanic technology of defense towers at your disposal. With the power of arrows, fire, lightning, ice, and even laser, you can give the monsters a run for their money. Gather resources, unlock upgrades, devise the most effective strategies, and keep your home and children safe from harm. Then move to a new neighborhood and start over. Why? Because it's fun.
PixelJunk Monsters HD takes the time-proven tower defense mechanics and adds a lot of dynamics to the gameplay by populating the playground with strangely cute creatures and giving you control over their keeper, the odd-looking Tikiman. Spanning across 3 different islands and 47 original stages, your adventure brings you many challenges and tests your planning skills as well as reflexes. The special HD version offered here offers re-mastered graphics and all the content of the basic game and its Deluxe and Encore expansions.
Fend off the persistent monster hordes and make the magical woodland your home in PixelJunk Monsters HD, for only $7.19 on GOG.com. The 20% off release discount offer lasts until Tuesday, October 15, at 9:59AM GMT.
NOTE:
The Mac OS X version of the game is now available as well. W00t!
Never heard of this before... Is it good ? I only ever liked one TD game (Defender's Quest) .
Sorry for the delay but PixelJunk Monsters HD is now available on your Mac! :D

Preferably, the "Gold Edition", please!

EDIT to add: For the sake of reference if GOG tries to get it, it's available for $6.99 (or 50 "Wild Coins") on Wild Tangent, although I *strongly* suggest it NOT purchasing from there, as you may only install on two systems and the code goes dead forever, plus I've always had to jump through hoops with their tech support.

IAmSinistar: Good points, and I suppose I should be more charitable about the whole thing, since a genre is a genre and fans of that genre deserve the best releases they can get. One shouldn't say "why do we need any more RPGs, there are already hundreds of them" if the RPG being offered has something to recommend it. So if this game meets the same criterion, it should be welcomed here.
I didn't see any discharity in your post. :) We all have our favorite genres. I've only recently gotten into trying to find TD games on the PC, because I don't use my tablet all that often (plus my eyes are getting older and start crossing after a while!).

I got PJM for my PS3 and PSP... not really crazy about it. I LOVE Shooter though, that one is so much fun.
I just saw an article saying PixelJunk Shooter is coming to PC November 11th for $8.99.

Hope this release means we will see the game here also.

IAmSinistar: Perhaps, but the Android tablet is chock-a-block with TD games, many of them free. And the free game that joppo mentioned looks good too. So I would really need a compelling reason as to why this particular one is so clever or well done or unique before I would splash out on it now.

SpiderFighter: I think, for me, you've just answered your own question: the Tower Defense genre is completely oversaturated on Android. I think it's underrepresented on PC though...there just aren't as many out there, and even fewer that are actually wrth playing (I can only think of Defense Grid: Gold and maybe the Sentinel series off the top of my head). There are also a few throw-away games made by 8Floor LTD simply (using the exact same poor engine with different graphical themes) for sites like WIldTangent, but they're not worth playing, imho. This is definitely one of the better games, and the fact that you control a character instead of the mouse cursor gives it a bit of a different feel.

If you're not loving the genre though, I doubt it will make you change your mind. :)

EDIT TO ADD: I've been playing for a bit now, and I'd forgotten too that you can't pause the game to place your towers, which gives it a more frantic feel. Also, you use gems to upgrade towers, but gems also research new ones, so you have to make that choice as well.

Wishbone: So tired of TD games.
Did you give Defender's Quest a try? It's something of a completely different take on Tower Defense, and with the story and humor in the character interactions I felt it was a refreshing take on the genre, okay so technically it's an RPG + Tower Defense hybrid; but, hybrids can be the best of both worlds when done well.

Defense Grid is probably my favorite of all strictly TD genre games, I agree it'd be great to have it here on GOG.com!

I really enjoyed this on the PS3, and I'm not even a fan of TD games. That was probably because of the local co-op.

I think I'll get this. It's definitely a different take on the genre, or at least a take that suite me. It feels more action oriented than other TD games.

bansama: Anyone able to explain the difference between this and the Steam version to justify the huge difference in price?

Alfie3000: No online co-op or Leaderboards and of course Steam dependant stuff like achievements, cards, cloud saves.
Huh... I had asked this question on the game's forum, but got no reply. If it's true that those are the only differences, that's pretty funny. I was looking at buying it for the local co-op on last week's Steam sale, where it was 50% off ($9.99), but i'm glad i decided to pass on it. :)

Sorry for not clarifying this earlier. It is correct that it is only online co-op and leaderboards , as well as achievements and trading cards that are missing.
