Tikiman in trouble!
PixelJunk Monsters HD, the ultimate edition of the tower defense game full of soothing colors and woodland magic, is available 20% off on GOG.com. That's only $7.19 for the first week.
You are the Tikiman, defender of the forest, guardian of the critters, keeper of your little tikki offspring. The woodland is in great peril. Hordes of twisted monsters seek to destroy your habitat and feast on your helpless tikikids. This cannot be allowed! Lucky for you, you've got the shamanic technology of defense towers at your disposal. With the power of arrows, fire, lightning, ice, and even laser, you can give the monsters a run for their money. Gather resources, unlock upgrades, devise the most effective strategies, and keep your home and children safe from harm. Then move to a new neighborhood and start over. Why? Because it's fun.
PixelJunk Monsters HD takes the time-proven tower defense mechanics and adds a lot of dynamics to the gameplay by populating the playground with strangely cute creatures and giving you control over their keeper, the odd-looking Tikiman. Spanning across 3 different islands and 47 original stages, your adventure brings you many challenges and tests your planning skills as well as reflexes. The special HD version offered here offers re-mastered graphics and all the content of the basic game and its Deluxe and Encore expansions.
Fend off the persistent monster hordes and make the magical woodland your home in PixelJunk Monsters HD, for only $7.19 on GOG.com. The 20% off release discount offer lasts until Tuesday, October 15, at 9:59AM GMT.

Great release!
Noooo, I just bought this on Steam!
Now to get it here too... :D
Also, yay for PixelJunk!

Really dislike tower defense games

Try Castaway TD from armor games, it is nice beautiful and relatively easy. In fact even if I'm not really good at these games I could still complete it with no hassle. On hard settings.
From what I can see today's release and that game "share" many ideas, but I don't know which one came first.
Unless someone can sell me on why I need yet another TD game, going to have to give this a pass.

It's a pretty..... TD game?
Pixel Junk Monsters (PJM) is the game that introduced me to the Tower Defense genre (Attn: GOG - more, please!) on the PSP, and I can't believe it's finally on PC!

It plays like most Tower games: you have a "gate" (here called a "Flock") that needs defending from invaders (or, "creeps") via offensive towers that you place. Creeps can come via ground or air, and in varying strengths. The strategy comes in deciding which type of towers to place, as they may target certain creeps differently (or, in some cases, not at all), and where to place them. Killing creeps (usually) leaves coins behind that you can use to upgrade your towers or build new ones.

Where the game differs is that, instead of your cursor doing all the work, you control a main character who must navigate the battlefield to pick up coins without taking damage. This is my least favorite part of PJM, as he moves slowly and sometimes you can't get to the coins before they vanish forever.

That said, this is one of my favorite tower defense games, and this is a solid version. The game features both gamepad and mouse support, local co-op, three islands with multiple levels each, and branching paths with good replayability value. The graphics are crisp, bright, and (like the game itself) absolutely charming. PJM is a welcome game on GOG, and a great addition to your collection.

Perhaps, but the Android tablet is chock-a-block with TD games, many of them free. And the free game that joppo mentioned looks good too. So I would really need a compelling reason as to why this particular one is so clever or well done or unique before I would splash out on it now.

I think, for me, you've just answered your own question: the Tower Defense genre is completely oversaturated on Android. I think it's underrepresented on PC though...there just aren't as many out there, and even fewer that are actually wrth playing (I can only think of Defense Grid: Gold and maybe the Sentinel series off the top of my head). There are also a few throw-away games made by 8Floor LTD simply (using the exact same poor engine with different graphical themes) for sites like WIldTangent, but they're not worth playing, imho. This is definitely one of the better games, and the fact that you control a character instead of the mouse cursor gives it a bit of a different feel.

If you're not loving the genre though, I doubt it will make you change your mind. :)

EDIT TO ADD: I've been playing for a bit now, and I'd forgotten too that you can't pause the game to place your towers, which gives it a more frantic feel. Also, you use gems to upgrade towers, but gems also research new ones, so you have to make that choice as well.

Instabought.

Thanks for this GOG, I've been hoping for a DRM-free release of this for a while now. The UMD version on PSP never got released over here and I don't want to buy games on PSN due to the DRM.
Daw, no co-op? Or is there LAN co-op? Why must everyone anchor to the Steam thing so much?

Edit: Oh ok phew, so local co-op.

Heard of the PixelJunk series but never played them, this looks interesting though. Hopefully we get the other PixelJunk games as some of them have Windows versions too.

SpiderFighter: snip
Good points, and I suppose I should be more charitable about the whole thing, since a genre is a genre and fans of that genre deserve the best releases they can get. One shouldn't say "why do we need any more RPGs, there are already hundreds of them" if the RPG being offered has something to recommend it. So if this game meets the same criterion, it should be welcomed here.
Nice release, never played any PixelJunk games, but have always been interested in them. Thanks!
Cool. Sign me up! I like the fact that it has an RMG, something this genre needs more of. I do hope we'll also see the rest of the upcoming PJ ports here as there were some really nice/fun-looking ones I saw.

bansama: Anyone able to explain the difference between this and the Steam version to justify the huge difference in price?

Alfie3000: No online co-op or Leaderboards and of course Steam dependant stuff like achievements, cards, cloud saves.
Heh. So all the shit I don't care about for half of what it's going for on Steam? Hell yeah! ;)

Seriously though, I never cared for leaderboards as I play these games for being able to beat challenging stages rather than raking in the points. As for co-op, I can see how some may like to play with friends online, but I doubt a TD game would lend itself well to that. *shrug*
