His name is not Mark.

Mark of the Ninja is the sneakiest one-of-a-kind stealth platformer that you’ll never see coming. How did it get here? We have no idea. The Special Edition is available for $5.99, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, on GOG.com! If you’re just not ready for the commitment, grab the basic edition for only $4.99 and the Special Edition upgrade can be yours for another $1.66 when you’re ready for more. The 66% discount across all three items lasts until Friday, August 8, at 9:59AM GMT.

The Mark is a sacred tradition of the Hisomu ninja clan. Extracted from the leaves of a mysterious desert flower, its essence holds a great but dangerous power that will snap even the strongest of minds. Generations past have found a way to harness this gift of nature, to draw upon it in need and strike against those who threaten their way. You have volunteered to be marked with this essence. In doing so, you will become strong, an unstoppable force. You will become aware, one with your surroundings. You will become agile, neither seen nor heard. You will use this power to protect the Hisomu clan. But as your body drinks the ink marking your skin, you slowly descend into madness. And when insanity takes hold, when actions stop being your own, will you make the sacrifice to protect the clan? This is the mark of the ninja.

You won’t find a more ambitious foray into 2D stealth gameplay than Mark of the Ninja. A detailed and consistent sound and sight system, as well as non-linear level design give you the freedom to approach every objective in your own way. Whether you’re a predator relishing each kill, a phantom striking fear and disorder into enemy ranks, or no more than a gust of wind, you can expect the same level of satisfyingly challenging gameplay. Go one step further, complete challenges, and unlock additional suits and abilities to compliment your playstyle. Once you think you’ve seen it all… New Game+ awaits with a whole new set of rules to overcome. All of this gameplay, wrapped in smooth animation on beautifully drawn backdrops, is enough to make bystanders forget you’re playing a game.

Mark of the Ninja Special Edition expands your options with a completely fresh non-lethal playstyle. Don the garbs of Dosan, a ninja tattoo artist with his own bag of tricks, and discover the intrigue that lead up to the main story. Done it all? The DLC also includes detailed developer commentary (in six languages!) scattered throughout the campaign for a fresh take on the world of Mark of the Ninja.

Disappear into the shadows, delve into madness, and honor your Mark of the Ninja for only $5.99 on GOG.com!

JudasIscariot: Nope, sorry all out of ninjas for now :) Come back Thursday :)

tburger: Like I've ever missed Thursday's release...or Tuesday...OR ANY OTHER since 4 years :-P
Never implied as such :P

Grargar: Ninjas on Thursday?
All depends on your interpretation :P

rodrolliv: Ok but, is it classic 'depends on your interpretation ninjas', or modern ones?
It all depends on your interpretation :) Also, any hints I give are always located in The Enigmatic Hint thread :)

JudasIscariot: What kind of shaking are you getting? O.o

tinyE: It's almost like the screen is bouncing. At first I thought it was the giant bell at the beginning because that would have actually been a nice touch but then the guy tolling gets blasted and yet it keeps bouncing.
Maybe it's a V-SYNC issue? What about your drivers? Can you update them?

Try turning v-sync on or off depending on whether it's already turned on:

Nah, I simply lived through the Clinton administration :P

MarkoH01: I read the whole thread and I am amazed. Not one single bad commentary about that game (if you don't count the "not my cup of tea" post). So this game has to be great and it really is cheap. But there is still one question left for me: dioes ist have a (good) story or is it more like a "get to the end of the level and don't care why" game?
It has an excellent story, imho :) I know, I know, I am biased and I am not telling much but that's because I don't want to spoil the story :)

I was about as far from the White House as one could get in the continental United States :P

Rinu: What a surprise. Especially since its publisher is Microsoft Studios anywhere else.

I've already got it in Humble bundle the last year however it was very enjoyable and it is the kind of game I can imagine myself wanting to re-play in a couple of years... So bought :).

I am usually avoiding this kind of games as they lack appeal to me yet I tried it and couldn't move on until I was finished. It drags a bit at the end but well done overall. Beautiful graphics and animations, okay story, fine controls (I hope GOG's supports Xbox controller) and interersting room puzzles at times.
Yes, it fully supports the Xbox 360 controller :) I just tried it out on Mint 17 :)

I'll add a notice to the game card :) Totally slipped my mind :)

Rodor: Why am I not wondering anymore seeing yet another modern platformer coming on GOG?
I don't know what your definition of a platformer actually is but I know it's not a platformer as far as I know :) I know that it being a 2D side scrolling game makes it look like some puzzle platformer but it's really a stealth game. The object here is not to run around, collect power ups, and test your reflexes :) This game is meant to be traversed slowly while looking around to see what you can use in your environment to get from one point to another. You want to be a ghost and not hurt a single enemy a la Thief? You can do that!

I have played MOTN all the way through from beginning to end and I personally, yes personally not as an employee of GOG, think that Mark of the Ninja will be one of those games that people will recall fondly in say 10-15 years :)

I know it's not a game from the 1990s but I personally (again speaking as a normal person not an employee :) ) think it deserves a fair chance by anyone who even remotely enjoys a well-crafted, in my opinion, stealth game :)

Sorry for the long text that sounds like I am trying to convince you to buy this game. I just wanted to express how good this game is but I am well aware that my opinion may be viewed as biased due to the fact that we, GOG.com, are selling the game :)

Silverhawk170485: Instuntbuy. --> Buying while performing a stunt.

I didn't saw the stairs coming while I was buying the game on my smartphone. I flew through the air like a ninja. ;-)

Martek: Did you get in on video for live leak? :p

Very tempted to pick this up, but...

What the trailer vid shows is using stealth to set up kills.

Is that the gist of the stealth?

Or can you also avoid lots of encounters via stealthy technique? (that to me is the attraction of stealthy gameplay - like in Thief or Sir you are being hunted, etc.)
You can avoid killing :) That's what I have been trying to do on the second level and kind of making progress as you have to be very patient and observe enemy patterns or manipulate your enemies to go somewhere else so that you can get past them :)

CatShannon: ...The only thing I was missing from it is the possibility of non-lethal take downs...
avatar
undeadcow: Errr... according to the Special Edition GOG game card "Playing as Dosan provides new non-lethal takedowns."

At last, a game that now has nothing missing from it?
You also get the Path of Wisdom outfit for the main game so that you can play through the whole story with non-lethal takedowns :)

avatar
CatShannon: I was referring to the normal game. But even with the Special Edition, I think there is no possibility for non-lethal takedowns in the original story when playing it for the first time. I surely didn’t notice it. I think one has to finish the game first and get all the different goodies to be able to replay the game/missions with the option for non-lethal takedowns.
In the SE version, you get the chance to change outfits throughout the levels. You'll see a black flag and when you touch it, you get taken to the upgrades menu :)

CatShannon: Really? I never noticed that. May have to fire the game up again to check for the option.

I understood that the player has to finish the additional story first that was added with the Special Edition to have the option for non-lethal takedowns. And if I remember correctly, the story of the Special Edition is recommended to players only that have already finished the original game...
I suppose so, yes :)

I played the original game way back when and the DLC level is muuuuuch easier than the final levels of the original game and I haven't played MOTN for over a year and, yes, I restarted over a few times on the DLC portion as my stealth skills have gotten rusty :D

I am not sure but I think if you just have the DLC installed then you'll have access to the non-lethal takedownns. I am not 100% sure because I simply started with the DLC story after installing both it and the original game as I wanted to have the continuity of the prequel level and the original story :D
avatar
JudasIscariot: I'd be more than happy to see all those games if it meant I could get Crusader Kings II (and all the DLC) on our site :D (seriously, that game is killing my sleep schedule lately and I am just playing it on vanilla no mods or DLC)

Gandos: That makes two of us. As a GOG customer, it goes without saying that there is a lot of games I want to see on the service....but Paradox games, especially CKII, are easily near the top of that list.

I can understand why CKII is the most successful of the more recent Paradox titles. As awesome as titles like Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron are, I can imagine how some people might be put off by the fact that you are essentially playing a country. In CKII, however, you play as a person (or multiple people, rather), which adds some role-playing elements to the experience and makes the game feel more personal. Naturally, given how both allegiances and countries were rather unstable in medieval times, that makes perfect sense.

In any case, when Paradox last replied to someone asking if their games will be made available on GOG, Shams Jorjani said that their games make use of a lot of Steam services and that making a non-Steam version (I quote) "would mean releasing an inferior game" (http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/1p272v/we_are_the_independent_publisher_developer/ccxzlm8). Hopefully, once GOG Galaxy is available, they will reconsider their stance.
I hope so too :)

Ixamyakxim: Add me to the camp "Would LOVE to see CKII Here!" - I've been wanting to play this one for a while now! Back to your regularly planned Ninja-ing
Only thing that would worry me would be all the DLC as I've seen some...reactions to DLC before....
