What kind of characters are people thinking of playing? I normally do clerics, not because I like them particularly but because noone else ever plays them and then they complain when there's no medic

I've never actually played D&D for longer than a couple hours once or twice at cons. Usually I roll rogues. [A kender once, talked a kobold to death. It was great.] There's also a 3.5 gnoll warrior that I never got to play sitting around in a .txt somewhere. Currently, I have access to the 4th ed. source books, I'll have to borrow anything else.
