Big_Boss: If you find something illegal, why don't you pass the link to GOG itself? They can put down that files, I think.
avatar
Trilarion: Can they? And would it hurt somebody or will just another link somewhere else appear?
Well, I think they can contact the host provider and take down the game links at least.
I found a site and I PMed it to a GOG staff members...maybe on future they will upload again the game, but to do that they must create a new site,I think.

Torrents are different...one can make a torrent from anywhere and put the link up anywhere.

As Trilarion said: It's not worth the time to go after uploaders...even if one gets taken down another pops up hours/days later.

Well,at least they can remove non-torrent links.

Well....but why?

If the know the link, they can simply contact the host asking to remove that file.

Most of the links ARE torrents, though.
(And most abandonware sites don't comply when people ask them to take stuff down.)

Well,if they are hosted on that specific site yes, maybe they can ignore the complain, but if they are hosted on external site, they can take down the link, there should be a form to contact them,I think.

If tht happens then they just put the link up somewhere else.....are you beginning to see the futility here yet? It's like chasing after windmills.
Well,if you take down 1 GB link, they must reupload it...if you take down it again, they must reupload it again...maybe they will get bored XD

SirEyeball: I am actually more surprised at how many "abandonware" sites that peddle GOG versions. Before I became aware of GOG I used a lot of these to play oldies but goodies (and still do for games like wizardry and the likes that you cant find anywhere else) the amount coming from GOG was staggering for some of these sites (I won't name names) that is actually partly how I came to know this and steam forums.
Distrubuting abandonware is illegal (because commercial abandonment does not in itself cause copyright to expire) but despite this you'll find that abandonware culture in general tends to have ethical standards of its own. One of the big things is that "reputable" abandonware sites stop distributing games when they cease to be abandonware, and instead tend to tell you where you can buy them. That's what separates them from "warez" sites, for example.

They usually only upload either a torrent(These can't be taken down due to their nature/makeup.) or a url link to the place where they uploaded the file(Usually a third party upload service.). As such, when a site takes down the link the person will just re-post the link under their current username or another username, or post it on another site.

That should be pretty straightforward, considering windmills are unable to run away.

Chasing after shadows, then.

(Lol I meant it's about as sensible as fighting windmills.)
