Now I have heard of a game like BG. Oh I'm so terrible with names. It's made by Wiobare, I think? And it's called Badler's Gate, or Galder's Mate, or Master... something. Anyways, great game. They even did a sequel called... Bone a Thrall? Needless to say, mature gamers only.

aren't the Eschalon games recommended as good Baldurs Gate copies?

They are absolutly amazing and breathtaking... it'll feel like BG all over again but in a new place, with a new story and new powers, events.... eveything you loved about BG is in IWD and I give them my Highest Recommendation.

If you liked BG even a slightest bit you will fall madly in-love with Icewind Dale!

To put it another way, Its the closest thing you'll get to Baldurs Gate, without having Minsc sleeping on your couch!

I can't speak to story-quality or style but from my 30 minutes with the demo of Eschalon 1 I can definitely say that gameplaywise it is not at all similar to Baldur's Gate. Might still be worth playing if you can forgive the horribly slow walking speed (I couldn't, sadly).

I can't think of any indie rpgs like BG, but then I don't know many indie games as such.

Outside of indies:
Icewind Dale has been mentioned and if you haven't played it, give that a whirl. Good stuff.

The other infinity engine games in general.

Perhaps Neverwinter Nights 2

Temple of Elemental Evil (to a degree).

You might enjoy Arcanum.

Gorasul: The Legacy of the Dragon

Hard to acquire legally but I think it's similar to Baldur's Gate 1, I've only played some part in the first starter area and it had a good feel but it's a b*tch to get to work on Windows 7, I had to use Win98 compatibility mode and force off Triple Buffering. There's an update out there but the game was suffered from bugs anyway.

As mentioned you should definitely specify what you like about Baldur's Gate, will get you closer to what you want.

It is a little hard to explain but thats is mainly how i would describe it.
I will look into the game mentioned. Icewind Dale i do have actually. Inquistor is mentioned several times so i will look into that too.

Hm, none of these is quite like Baldur's Gate, but some aspects of them might appeal to you (or not); in any case, they all have demos you could download and try:

- Avadon: The Black Fortress, as already suggested; is comparable to BG in size, has sidequests, joinable NPCs who sometimes react to each other and/or the environment (no voiceovers), tactical but mostly streamlined and easy turn-based combat; I'd say it's a bit more serious in tone than BG though, with less humor overall

- Driftmoon; simple real-time combat, joinable NPCs, main focus on exploration and story-telling with many dialogues, quests and interaction with your companions, this one is more lighthearted in tone, with lots of humor thrown in

- Knights of the Chalice; very simple story, few side quests, no joinable NPCs, but what it shares with BG is the challenging tactical combat based on D&D rules (purely turn-based though); since there's no gameplay video on the website, as opposed to the other two, here's one on youtube
