Navagon: You're right insomuch as to say that a crack doesn't always remove the DRM and it also sometimes results in a less stable game. Perhaps ultimately one that's more annoying than with the DRM in place.
absolutely true. besides security [virus embedded] i worry about stability. for this reason i would like to have here the possibility to download a DRM version of the cracked games (ie Arcanum, Flatout).

Navagon: Personally I think that GOG's DRM-free policy will be much more useful when they start providing more 2007+ games in future.

Darling_Jimmy: That was one of my least favourite features of Windows, actually. Countless times, I was away from home and my computer had reset itself, killing the server software I was relying on. Just tell me it's a good idea to update. Even leave an angry icon in the system tray. Oh well, that's in the past.
You can change that behavior yourself; problem was that most people let the PC running for ages even though the patch was for a critical vulnerability, then complained when they got exploited with it.

Also, if you write your software properly there's an option in Windows Update for it to save-state of all running applications and bring them up just as they were after the system is restarted, but most devs don't use it.

Well you probably could just download an ISO of anything you buy from gog from one of the many internet shops that seem to have a strange habit of not charging for stuff, swap the exes over and deal with the discs

It's disc check DRM and you won't have the disc. That goes for the vast majority of the DRM used in retail copies of GOG's catalogue. So it would be of no use to you whatsoever.

and what about if Gog would provide images of the protected discs, burned by for example Alcohol software?............

You'd have a nice shiny coaster to put your drinks on. Windows can tell the difference between a recordable disc and a proper disc and subsequently so can (most) disc checks.

Alcohol 120% was meant to properly burn protected discs (and does it pretty good dealing with old software....).

Windows would still know it's a recordable. You'd be able to install it just fine. But it would depend on the disc check as to whether or not the game itself would run.

So.

GoG has founded its business practices on providing old games that are DRM free. I declare this topic invalid, if you want DRM in your game by all means go to Ebay and buy the potentially incompatible originals.

Also, I think I smell the unmistakable scent of troll.

You can't have DRM free on a game that already had DRM without modifying the source code in one way or another, thereby cracking the game.

You're right that "cracked" doesn't necessarily mean DRM-free, but "DRM-free" does and GOG games are DRM-free by policy. As such, if they crack a game then they do so in order to remove DRM/copy-protection/etc. Also, they do so with the consent of the rightsholder, and I trust that they ensure that the resultant game is fully functional and free of malware.

In summary: you have nothing to worry about.
