Good mobile games are actually a rarity. Most of them are either microtransaction-infested F2P clusterfucks or gimped versions of PC/console titles that simply do not work well on a touchscreen device.

I have enjoyed: Scribblenauts Remix, Rayman Jungle Run, Sonic 1 & 2 Remastered (the definitive versions of the Sega Mega Drive games IMO, provided you have a decent Bluetooth gamepad), Canabalt, Funky Smugglers, Aaaaaaaaaaaa! for the Awesome and The Room. Anomaly: Warzone Earth Mobile Campaign deserves an honourable mention, and there are a small number of decent PC ports that work quite well on Android, like Broken Sword and Avadon.

Other PC ports aren't that great. I have KOTOR for Android, but both the gamepad controls and touch controls suck. PvZ is simply too fiddly on a small phone screen. Super Hexagon doesn't really work on a touchscreen with the precision you need. And don't even get me started with Dotemu's shitty ports of Double Dragon Trilogy, R-Type I & II and Raiden Legacy.

To be honest though, Android games are just a quick timewaster for when I have 10 minutes to kill. If I want to game properly on the move, I have a PSP, a Vita, a 3DS and a GBA SP for that, although I must confess that after having been spoiled with suspend/resume on the PSP, Vita and 3DS, it's rather irritating to have to lose my progress on the GBA when I have to do something else.

Had an iPhone 3Gs back then. On it my favourites were, Streetfighter IV Volt, Adventure Bar, Game Dev Tycoon.
Now I'm the Asus Zenphone, which runs Android (and I'll be sticking with Android from now on), my favourites are Tales of Illyria, Sorcery 1 and 2, KOF 98, Out There, Wayward Souls.

I've been playing Clash of Clans daily as well. Everything that is wrong with the modern game industry is present in COC. F2P, P2W, Microtransactions up the roof, long waits etc. I've not spent a single cent on it though, it's a good time waster. And surprisingly the game requires quite a good deal of strategy to attack.
Spectral Souls
These are some of my faves. I'm particularly fond of the CrossMe nonogram games. They're a little expensive, but they've been regularly updated with new puzzles since their release a few years ago, well worth the price.

Amazing Alex
Bag It
CrossMe
CrossMe Color
Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes
Monument Valley
Spelltower
Super Stickman Golf 2
Threes
Trainyard
I've enjoyed the Kairosoft simulation titles pretty well. My favorites probably being Hot Springs Story and Mega Mall Story (English titles), although there are quite a few different ones that cater to lots of different tastes.

omega64: You forgot Ghost Trick. ;)
Not for android devices though.

For the op, get the amazon app, there's always 1 free app each day and in some ocasions they have have a bunch of free apps for free (and easter is coming up).
As for the games i would say:

Let me copy/paste my previous list:

The Room (1 and 2)
Ninja Village, Game Dev Story, etc (Kairosoft games are really good)
Kingdom Rush (even with the bullshit microtransactions is still good)
Dungelot
Tales of Illyria
Braveland (kind of short tho)
Plants vs Zombies
Rebuild

And i have to add Cross Me, it's a really good Picross clone, i'm addicted to it.
